Learners do not readily form abstract category representations across sensory modalities.

A long-standing debate in cognitive science centers around whether our internal representations of the external world are abstract and amodal or whether they are grounded by sensory modality. Perceptual category learning presents a unique test bed of this debate as categories exist within all sensory modalities, but there is mixed evidence about whether people form abstract representations that can be analogized across modalities. In the present study, we examine whether learners form such abstract representations of auditory and visual categories that share the same rule-based structure. Acro

The psychology of negotiation alternatives: Power, pathways, and performance.

Negotiation research has long treated alternatives-typically captured as BATNAs-as the central source of bargaining power. Stronger alternatives reduce dependence and are therefore assumed to improve negotiation outcomes, yet this structural account leaves much of the variance in negotiation behavior and outcomes unexplained. This review synthesizes emerging research and proposes a framework that organizes the effects of negotiation alternatives around four psychological pathways: aspirational, affective-motivational, cognitive, and strategic signaling. Through the aspirational pathway, altern

Psychometric validation of the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) in an inpatient substance use disorder treatment program.

OBJECTIVE: The Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) are two widely used instruments for assessing anxiety and depression, respectively, but no studies have examined their psychometric properties among individuals with substance use disorders. This study's objectives were to (a) validate the factor structures, examining single and two-factor models, and (b) examine measurement invariance across age and sex. METHOD: Inpatients with substance use disorders (N = 1,220, 70.9% male, Mage = 41 years) completed the GAD-7 and PHQ-9 as part of routine measur

Delay discounting violations vary by adolescent sociodemographics: Excluding nonsystematic data may bias conclusions.

Delay discounting tasks are increasingly used across psychology to examine self-regulation and value-based decision making. These tasks assess how individuals devalue rewards as delays to receipt increase, with responses expected to follow a decreasing pattern. When participants report higher valuation at longer delays-a violation of this expected trend-such responses are often flagged as nonsystematic and, in many cases, excluded from analysis. Although intended to optimize data quality, such exclusions may systematically bias samples and distort downstream inferences. Using data from the Ado

Dealing with small samples in disability research: Do not fret, Bayesian analysis is here.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: Small sample sizes are a common problem in disability research. Here, we show how Bayesian methods can be applied in small sample settings and the advantages that they provide. METHOD/DESIGN: To illustrate, we provide a Bayesian analysis of employment status (employed vs. unemployed) for those with disability. Specifically, we apply empirically informed priors, based on large-sample (N = 95,593) July 2019 Current Population Survey (CPS) microdata to small subsamples (average n = 26) from July 2021 CPS microdata, defined by six specific difficulties (i.e., hearing, vision, c

Middle cerebral artery blood velocity and cognitive function after high- and moderate-intensity aerobic exercise sessions.

This crossover study explored the acute effect of a session of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) or moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) on middle cerebral artery (MCA) variables such as cerebral blood velocity, pulsatility index (PI) and resistivity index (RI) through transcranial Doppler (TCD), and cognitive function (CF - verbal fluency and Digit Span) in healthy young adults. Participants (26 healthy young adults, 13 women, 24 ± 3 years) underwent two different randomized exercise sessions: (1) MICT (60 % heart rate reserve, HRR) and (2) HIIT (80 % HRR). MCA velocity, PI, RI

Online cognitive assessment in the era of COVID-19: Examining the validity of the MEZURE.

Developed more than 2 decades ago, the MEZURE (Assessment Technologies, 1995-2020; https://www.mezure.com/) has received increased attention as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is the first individualized test of cognitive ability created to use an online (local or remote) assessment modality. The MEZURE claims to be aligned both with the extended Gf-Gc theory and the Cattell-Horn-Carroll model of abilities. Whereas the test publisher claims it used exploratory factor analysis to investigate the instrument's factor structure, only the subtest factor loadings on the Gf-Gc factors were furn

A regularization method for linking brain and behavior.

In a world of big data and computational resources, there has been a growing interest in further validating computational models of decision making by subjecting them to more rigorous constraints. One prominent area of study is model-based cognitive neuroscience, where measures of neural activity are explained and interpreted through the lens of a cognitive model. Although some early work has developed the statistical framework for exploiting the covariation between brain and behavior through factor analysis linking functions, current methods are still far from providing parsimonious accounts

The structure of peritraumatic reactions and their relationship with PTSD among disaster survivors.

Peritraumatic reactions such as fear, psychic and somatoform dissociation, tonic immobility, data-driven processing, and mental defeat are important in the etiology of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, current measures of such reactions overlap conceptually and do not clearly identify distinct peritraumatic processes. It is not known which processes are uniquely associated with PTSD. We investigated the factor structure of six standard peritraumatic measures and their relationship with the four Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM-5; American Psychia

The suicide crisis syndrome: A network analysis.

Recent studies introduced the suicide crisis syndrome (SCS), a condition associated with imminent suicidal behavior and characterized by (a) a pervasive feeling of entrapment in which the escape from an unbearable life situation is perceived as both urgent and impossible (Criterion A) and (b) affective disturbance, loss of cognitive control, hyperarousal, and social withdrawal (Criterion B). The goal of the present study was to use some of the analytic tools provided by network analyses to further the understanding of the psychological, emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and physiological proce

An initial investigation of the association between DSM-5 posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms and nonsuicidal self-injury functions.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the well-established link between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), little is known about factors that may lead to self-injury among trauma-exposed individuals. Moreover, no research to date has examined these relations in the context of the newly revised Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5) PTSD criteria. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to explore the associations between DSM-5 PTSD symptom clusters (i.e., intrusion, avoidance, negative alterations in cognitions and mood, alterations in

An initial investigation of the association between distress intolerance and posttraumatic stress within military sexual trauma survivors.

OBJECTIVE: Researchers have recently found several links between distress intolerance (DI), the perceived inability to withstand aversive emotional and somatic states, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Despite this well-established relationship, DI has yet to be examined among victims of military sexual trauma (MST), a population known to have increased rates of PTSD. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to examine overall rates of DI, as well as the relationship between DI and PTSD symptom and cluster severity using an outpatient sample of MST survivors. METHOD: The sa

Bilingualism, executive control, and age at diagnosis among people with early-stage Alzheimer's disease in Wales.

The observation of a bilingual advantage in executive control tasks involving inhibition and management of response conflict suggests that being bilingual might contribute to increased cognitive reserve. In support of this, recent evidence indicates that bilinguals develop Alzheimer's disease (AD) later than monolinguals, and may retain an advantage in performance on executive control tasks. We compared age at the time of receiving an AD diagnosis in bilingual Welsh/English speakers (n = 37) and monolingual English speakers (n = 49), and assessed the performance of bilinguals (n = 24) and mono…

Task similarity increases difficulty in maintaining but not in switching between tasks.

Switching tasks and adapting to new situations by appropriately allocating mental resources is crucial for interacting with the world around us. This ability requires cognitive control and includes several operations such as maintaining and modifying task goals, allocating attention to the relevant stimulus, and selecting the appropriate motor command. Surprisingly, although we know that switching between tasks incurs costs, whether the type of activity itself makes any difference has rarely been investigated. This study uses an innovative, well-controlled paradigm that keeps response rules an

Executive function and social behavior: Causal evidence from loading working memory and inhibitory control.

This article investigates how domain-specific executive functions contribute to perspective-taking and prosocial behavior. Across two preregistered experiments, we independently manipulated working memory (WM) and inhibitory control to assess their effects on social cognition. In Experiment 1 (N = 128), WM load was varied using a dual-task paradigm, and participants completed behavioral and eye-tracking measures of perspective-taking and prosociality. WM load impaired perspective-taking, and this effect was larger under nonsocial than social load. Conversely, individual differences in prosocia

What lab-based and self-report executive function measures predict in real-world task performance.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether cognitive laboratory tests or self-report inventories more effectively predict performance in a real-world executive function (EF) task. METHOD: Data were collected from 71 healthy university students who completed a battery of cognitive tasks, self-report inventories, and an ecologically valid Library task incorporating behavioral and eye-tracking measures. RESULTS: Regression analyses revealed a dissociation in predictive validity between assessment methods. Lab-based EF measures showed a nonlinear association with task accuracy and uniquely predicted

Explicit and implicit representation of reward value in cocaine use disorder (CUD): A mouse kinematic study on intertemporal decision-making.

OBJECTIVE: Cocaine use disorder (CUD) is a chronic condition with implications on cognitive functions such as decision-making and impulse control. Intertemporal choice paradigms, measuring temporal discounting, offer insight into decision-making of addictive behaviors. When coupled with mouse kinematics, they also provide implicit measures of decision dynamics. Here, we employed mouse kinematics to investigate the profile of both explicit and implicit intertemporal decision-making in CUD patients versus healthy controls, and the degree of association with clinical, psychiatric, and neuropsycho

Getting oriented: Redefining attention deficits in Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Parkinson's disease (PD) may affect not only motor functions, but also cognitive processes such as attention. While past research has examined PD impact on spatial attention, it has not addressed how the key functions of attentional orienting and alerting in PD are mediated by cueing format, an ecologically relevant parameter. We assessed how exogenous and endogenous orienting cue modes affect PD patients' visuospatial attention expressed as dorsal attention network orienting benefits, ventral attention network reorienting costs, and alerting abilities. METHOD: Ninety PD patients a
