Transfer to community and prison mental health care from Ireland's main remand prison over three years: 2015-2017.

BACKGROUND: The post-release period is associated with an increased risk of morbidity and mortality. Previous studies have identified deficits in pre-release planning for mentally ill people in prison, particularly in remand settings. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine the proportion of mentally ill people in Ireland's main remand prison who were referred for mental health follow up in community and prison settings, who achieved face to face contact with the receiving service. METHOD: This retrospective observational cohort study was based in Ireland's main male remand prison, Cloverhill. Par

Barriers and Challenges to Making Referrals for Treatment and Services for Opioid Misuse in Family Planning Settings.

Background: In this opioid overdose epidemic, women are an overlooked group seeing increasing rates of overdose death. Implementation challenges have prevented evidence-based interventions from effectively reaching women who misuse opioids, with gaps in access to effective treatment and services. Family planning clinics could serve as important points of contact for referral to needed treatments and services. The study explores how family planning staff knowledge and attitudes related to opioid misuse serve as potential barriers and challenges in making referrals for evidence-based services an

Updated preparedness and response framework for influenza pandemics.

The complexities of planning for and responding to the emergence of novel influenza viruses emphasize the need for systematic frameworks to describe the progression of the event; weigh the risk of emergence and potential public health impact; evaluate transmissibility, antiviral resistance, and severity; and make decisions about interventions. On the basis of experience from recent influenza responses, CDC has updated its framework to describe influenza pandemic progression using six intervals (two prepandemic and four pandemic intervals) and eight domains. This updated framework can be used f

No Sensorization without Representation: Co-designing Tailored Sensorization Plans with Nursing Home Leadership, Direct Care Staff, Residents, and Resident Family Members.

OBJECTIVE: : Although interest in using sensors in long-term care (LTC) settings is growing, little guidance exists on how to engage stakeholders in planning. This study aimed to (1) develop a systematic, community-engaged process for co-designing sensorization plans - defining goals and parameters (e.g., data collection, sharing) to support decision making prior to sensor deployment, (2) apply this process with LTC stakeholders, and (3) examine stakeholder perspectives across sensor approaches. METHODS: : We conducted a multi-phase, multi-method study in a single nursing home that included o

Haiti. Educating factory workers.

There are approximately 50,000 workers employed in the light assembly industry in Haiti. About 70% are women, the majority of whom are aged between 25 and 34 years, and are either single or in a nonpermanent relationship with the father of their children. Many live and work in appalling conditions, surviving on very low wages to support several children and an extended family. The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is now a visible problem in many factories. In October 1988, the Center for the Promotion of Women Workers (Centre de Promotion des Femmes Ouvriers/CPFO) launched a pilot AID

Body Lice among People Experiencing Homelessness and Access to Hygiene Services during the COVID-19 Pandemic-Preventing Trench Fever in Denver, Colorado, 2020.

Eight people with human body louse-borne Bartonella quintana infections were detected among people experiencing homelessness (PEH) in Denver during January-September 2020, prompting a public health investigation and community outreach. Public health officials conducted in-person interviews with PEH to more fully quantify body lice prevalence, transmission risk factors, access to PEH resources, and how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected resource access. Recent body lice exposure was reported by 35% of 153 interview participants. In total, 75% of participants reported reduced access to PEH servi

College-attending young men's sexual and reproductive health knowledge, attitudes and practices.

ObjectiveMale involvement in contraceptive practice remains low. Family planning and pediatric health associations have recommended an emphasis on long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARC) in clinical counseling with adolescents and young adults, raising concerns about the resulting adverse impact on sexually transmitted infection (STI) rates. Participants: College-attending men responded to an internet based questionnaire (n=31) and a phone-based qualitative interview (n=25). Methods: Our survey solicited attitudes toward and knowledge of contraceptive methods and assessed communication pr

Treatment options for multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter species.

BACKGROUND: Patient-centered communication and trusting relationships are central to effective clinical management for anyone living with chronic illness. For those able to access and continue effective medications, aging with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is now like aging with any chronic illness. Advance Care Planning (ACP) has been a recognized strategy to improve health outcomes for individuals with serious illnesses. Despite its importance, African Americans living with HIV (AAHIV) often experience barriers to ACP, including having lived in a syndemic environment where low healt
