Child Maltreatment and Intimate Partner Violence in Mental Health Settings.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) and child maltreatment (physical, emotional, sexual abuse, neglect, and children's exposure to IPV) are two of the most common types of family violence; they are associated with a broad range of health consequences. We summarize evidence addressing the need for safe and culturally-informed clinical responses to child maltreatment and IPV, focusing on mental health settings. This considers clinical features of child maltreatment and IPV; applications of rights-based and trauma- and violence-informed care; how to ask about potential experiences of violence; safe r

Social Support and Other Factors Associated with HIV Testing by Hispanic/Latino Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men in the U.S. South.

Cognitive-psychosocial and other factors may affect participation in HIV testing, particularly by Hispanic/Latino gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) in the U.S. South, a region hard-hit by HIV. We used univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses to examine the association between social support and other cognitive-psychosocial factors; sociodemographic characteristics; risk behaviors; and self-reported HIV testing in a sample of 304 Hispanic/Latino MSM in North Carolina. In the multivariable logistic regression analysis, general and HIV-related social suppor

Lack of Cultural Competency in International Aid Responses: The Ebola Outbreak in Liberia.

A cornerstone of effective disaster management is that response should always begin and end at the local level (1). The response to the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in Liberia, West Africa, was a combination of independent efforts by many nations and organizations. Many of these independent efforts ignored or were not able to work with the local levels of emergency management in Liberia. This oversight occurred because of the Liberian's mistrust of both their government and foreign aid groups, as well as the lack of cultural competency demonstrated by the aid groups. The health-care and

Developing Brain Injury Resource Facilitation for Acquired Brain Injury: Indications and Unmet Needs.

Owing to major progress in the survivorship following acquired brain injury (ABI), there exists a pressing need for the development of systems of care and rehabilitation tailored to ABI. One of the supportive systems is brain injury resource facilitation (brain injury RF), which focuses on having therapeutic, social, and financial resources readily available and easily accessible for persons with ABI. Brain injury RF comprises identification of a person's strengths and challenges, goal setting, resource identification, coordination, access, utilization, monitoring, evaluation, and advocacy. Br

Children enacting idioms of witchcraft and spirit possession as a response to trauma: therapeutically beneficial, and for whom?

This article examines children's enactment of spirit possession idioms and witchcraft in Africa including the meanings such idioms provide and the local healing resources they mobilize. Idioms of haunting spirits in Northern Uganda and witch-children elsewhere in Africa can be interpreted as manifestations of social crises and mass traumatic stress. On the other hand, such idioms also allow children to articulate, reflect upon, and communicate the complex feelings resulting from their precarious positions within families and communities under duress. With the help of Dow's transactional model

Co-design of the Implementation Toolkit for Small and Sick Newborn Care: a global open-access knowledge management web platform and linked community targeting the know-do gap.

BACKGROUND: Most births worldwide (> 80%) occur in health care facilities, yet 2.3 million newborns die annually. If the know-do gap between evidence and implementation was closed, an estimated 752,000 newborn deaths could be prevented per year. We describe the co-design of the Implementation Toolkit (Newborn Toolkit) for Small and Sick Newborn Care (SSNC), a web platform and linked community of global implementers, facilitated by NEST360 and UNICEF to enable access to curated resources, including guidelines, practical tools and peer learning for contextual adaptation. METHODS: A systematic t

Evaluating public health vending machine rollout and utilization in criminal-legal settings.

INTRODUCTION: Harm reduction resources for people who are involved in the criminal-legal system should be easily accessible. The Rhode Island Department of Corrections (DOC) used funding from a state opioid stewardship fund created through the Rhode Island Opioid Stewardship Act (legislation passed in 2019) to implement five custom-designed vending machines for community corrections offices and state awaiting trial carceral facilities. The vending machines provide resources for overdose prevention, infection prevention, basic needs, and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). We aim to describe th

Realities and experiences of community health volunteers as agents for behaviour change: evidence from an informal urban settlement in Kisumu, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Community health workers play an important role in health service delivery and are increasingly involved in behaviour change interventions, including for hygiene-related behaviour change. However, their role and capacity to deliver behaviour change interventions, particularly in high-density urban settlements, remain under-researched. This study examines the behaviour change-related activities of community health volunteers (CHVs)-community health workers affiliated with the Kenyan Ministry of Health-in a peri-urban settlement in Kenya, in order to assess their capabilities, opport

The Water-Energy-Food Nexus as a Tool to Transform Rural Livelihoods and Well-Being in Southern Africa.

About 60% of southern Africa's population lives in rural areas with limited access to basic services and amenities such as clean and safe water, affordable and clean energy, and balanced and nutritious diets. Resource scarcity has direct and indirect impacts on nutrition, human health, and well-being of mostly poor rural communities. Climate change impacts in the region are manifesting through low crop yields, upsurge of vector borne diseases (malaria and dengue fever), and water and food-borne diseases (cholera and diarrhoea). This study applied a water-energy-food (WEF) nexus analytical live

Diverting victims of commercial sexual exploitation from juvenile detention: development of the InterCSECt screening protocol.

Identifying victims of commercial sexual exploitation in the juvenile justice system is a challenging complexity requiring concerted organizational commitment. Using a three-tiered, trauma-informed screening process, a 3½-month pilot intervention was implemented in Clark County Juvenile Court (Washington) to identify victims in an effort to connect them to community youth advocates and sexual assault resources. A total of 535 boys and girls ages 9 to 19 were screened during intake; 47 of these youth reported risk factors associated with commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) and wer

Perception of spousal abuse expressed by married Bangladeshi immigrant women in Houston, Texas, U.S.A.

Relocating from a homogeneous ethnic country into one that is heterogeneous may threaten one's self-identity, cause isolation, and trigger tension between a couple making the journey together. Most spousal abuse cannot be separated from the cultural, social, and economic contexts in which it occurs. An assessment of abuse in an immigrant community is impacted by stereotypes, cultural stigmas, and lack of knowledge or trust of available resources and services. A prevalence rate of 10% for spousal abuse was revealed in this study of 23 married female immigrants from Bangladesh residing in Housto

The racial trauma task force: Clinical-community psychology approaches to healing racial trauma during COVID-19.

Due to an increase in media and news attention on anti-Black racism in 2020, the APA declared racism a pandemic as the CDC highlighted the challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, the work described in the current manuscript took place during what is referred to as a double pandemic for Black people in the United States. This paper discusses the impact of this period on a department and its students, the training students advocated for in response to the urgent need for more support for Black communities, and the approaches they used to address racial stress and trauma during this un

"Many old people taking care of old people": Experiences of older adults after Hurricane María in Puerto Rico.

The Puerto Rican population has presented demographic changes resulting in a greater proportion of older adults than almost any other country in the world, with an estimated 28% of the total population being over 60 years of age. A key public health issue in Puerto Rico (PR) is older adults' mental health and wellbeing. Located in the Caribbean, PR is prone to natural hazards such as hurricanes, which are a known threat to older adults' overall health and wellbeing. However, the needs of older adults in PR and their mental health have been largely neglected, especially in less visible and marg

Seasonal Variations in Microbial Community Structure and Function in the Waters Along the Yangtze-to-Huaihe Water Diversion Project According to Metagenomics.

Water diversion projects can alleviate the uneven spatiotemporal distribution of water resources, but they may also impact functions of aquatic ecosystems in the waters along the route. Despite their importance, the temporal and spatial changes in multi-domain microbial community structure and function along the route remain poorly understood. Metagenomics was employed to investigate the community structure and function of bacteria, archaea, and fungi in the aquatic environments along the Yangtze-to-Huaihe water diversion project in winter and summer seasons. The results showed that seasonal v

A framework for disability lived expertise.

This article introduces a framework for disability lived expertise, aiming to address the undervaluing of contributions from people with disability in crucial sectors such as policy, services, rehabilitation, education and research. It distinguishes between disability lived experience, which is the personal and individual experience of disability, and 'lived expertise', which builds on personal experience through critical reflection and engagement with the disability community. Developed by seventeen individuals with diverse disabilities, the framework outlines key components of disability liv
