To identify the regulatory effect of sodium selenite and vitamin E on the complement-neutrophil-reactive oxygen(ROS) activation feedback (CNAF) mechanism mediated inflammatory response, we detected ROS production and complement activation in vitro tests by chemiluminescence technique and complement fixation and recognized the regulation of the inflammatory response in vivo mouse vasculitis models of skin, lung, and liver. Convincing results were observed as both in vitro and in vivo experiments showing inhibition of CNAF mechanism with sodium selenite and vitamin E could effect the reduced ROS

I reviewed first the history of detection for autoantibodies and the methods to detect the circulating immune complexes. Five mouse ascitic fluids (MAFs) containing monoclonal antibody to Rickettsia rickettsii were produced from three original fusions by murine hybridoma technology. The five MAFs were fractionated and purified; each contained monoclonal antibody of the immunoglobulin G2a subclass. The chronic, rheumatoid synovitis in four patients (two children and two adults) with immunodeficiency was studied by means of immunopathological examination of synovial tissues and fluids. We carried out a seroepidemiological study on 63 patients undergoing organ transplantation in order to determine viral markers like CMV, HTLV III, HS and V/Z. The antibodies valuation was carried out by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA-Abbott) and complement fixation test. All the tested markers give a high percentage of positivity even if the values relevant to anti-HTLV III antibodies can not be related to infection but, probably, to anti-HLA-Dr antibodies.

The complement fixation test was used to examine 80 human mammary tumors for the presence of heterogeneous Forssman antigen: 62 cases of cancers of different malignancy (adenocarcinoma, solid tumors), 13 cases of fibroadenomas and 5 cases of fibrocystic mastopathies. Subject to study was also normal tissue of the mammary gland. Forssman antigen was not found in all the tumors tested, as it was not detected in tissues of the normal mammary gland. Therefore the process of transformation of normal cells to tumor ones is not accompanied by the occurrence in them of heterogenous Forssman antigen.

The authors intend to elaborate a brucellosis eradication program which could be used in the Amazonian region, an area characterised by extremely extensive animal husbandry practices. Under such conditions, eradication by selection is the only feasible approach. Brucellosis has been successfully eradicated from a herd with 22.1% prevalence of infection by two serological surveys using an indirect ELISA and the complement fixation test.

Antisera against ganglioside GM2 were raised in rabbits and tested by immunodiffusion, complement fixation and immunohistology. The presence of precipitating antibodies was demonstrated by immunodiffusion techniques (Ouchterlony and reversed Mancini). Louping ill disease of sheep has been recognised in Scotland for centuries. It causes encephalitis and is transmitted by the sheep tick, Ixodes ricinus. Human infection was first reported in 1934. Thirty-one cases of human infection have now been described. Serologic tests are useful in providing a presumptive diagnosis of invasive fungal infection, allowing early institution of specific therapy. The judicious use of these serologic tests for circulating antibodies or antigens also may aid in analyzing response to treatment and in assessing prognosis. This review summarizes the currently available serologic tests for common invasive mycoses and discusses their relative usefulness and reliability.
