Imagery rescripting as a short intervention for symptoms associated with mental images in clinical disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

There is an unmet need for effective short-term therapeutic techniques to reduce clinical symptoms associated with prospective-, as well as retrospective aversive mental images across mental disorders. We investigated the efficacy of imagery rescripting (IR) as a short-term intervention across clinical disorders, as the literature suggests that this technique could be a promising intervention to reduce psychopathology by altering intrusive mental images. A systematic literature review identified 23 trials including 805 adult patients, out of which 15 trials were designed as randomized controll

The empirical status of psychodynamic psychotherapy - an update: Bambi's alive and kicking.

BACKGROUND: The Task Force on Promotion and Dissemination of Psychological Procedures proposed rigorous criteria to define empirically supported psychotherapies. According to these criteria, 2 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) showing efficacy are required for a treatment to be designated as 'efficacious' and 1 RCT for a designation as 'possibly efficacious'. Applying these criteria modified by Chambless and Hollon, this article presents an update on the evidence for psychodynamic therapy (PDT) in specific mental disorders. METHODS: A systematic search was performed using the criteria by Ch

Posttraumatic stress disorder and comorbidity in Australian Vietnam veterans: risk factors, chronicity and combat.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and comorbid DSM-III-R psychiatric diagnoses to determine commonalities in risk factors, relative onsets and the role of combat exposure. METHOD: An epidemiological cohort study using standardised psychiatric, social and health interviews was undertaken with a national random sample of male Australian Army Vietnam veterans. Interviews and searches of military records yielded risk factors for PTSD, which were examined for association with each psychiatric diagnosis

Some psychological characteristics of patients with anorexia nervosa whose weight has been newly restored.

A preliminary study has served to demonstrate that patients with primary anorexia nervosa whose weight has been newly restored to normal, and who are currently involved in individual and family psychotherapy, are significantly characterized by having very low self-esteem, by being highly sensitive to social interactions and by being 'obsessoid'. It is suggested that, in therapy, specific behavioural approaches to these problems may usefully complement other psychotherapeutic endeavours.

Personality tests in Ménière's disorder.

The personality of patients with Ménière's disorder has been evaluated using the Eysenck Personality Inventory and the Middlesex Hospital Questionnaire. The most notable finding was an elevated obsessionality score in the patients with Ménière's disorder as compared with other groups. There was no significant difference between the personality of subgroups of patients complying with rigid definitions of Ménière's disorder and those complying with a more liberal definition. The results of most scales decreased with increasing severity of the disorder, although the obsessionality scores do not f

Burden on key relatives of patients with schizophrenia vs neurotic disorders: a pilot study.

The burden perceived by the key relatives of 27 schizophrenics and 19 patients with neurotic disorders, both with at least a minimal degree of personal/social disability and a current exacerbation of symptoms, was assessed by a self-administered questionnaire. Only modest quantitative and qualitative differences between the two samples of key relatives were found. The burden perceived by the relatives of schizophrenics was more closely related to the patients' personal/social disability than that reported by the relatives of neurotic patients. The psychopathological features of schizophrenic p

Genetically predicted fatty liver disease and risk of psychiatric disorders: A mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and alcohol-related liver disease (ArLD) constitute the primary forms of chronic liver disease, and their incidence is progressively increasing with changes in lifestyle habits. Earlier studies have documented a correlation between the occurrence and development of prevalent mental disorders and fatty liver. AIM: To investigate the correlation between fatty liver and mental disorders, thus necessitating the implementation of a mendelian randomization (MR) study to elucidate this association. METHODS: Data on NAFLD and ArLD were retrieved

Treatment of Limerence Using a Cognitive Behavioral Approach: A Case Study.

Limerence is an underresearched condition of unknown prevalence that causes significant loss of productivity and emotional distress to sufferers. Individuals with limerence display an obsessive attachment to a particular person or "limerent object" (LO) that interferes with daily functioning and the formation and maintenance of healthy relationships. The current study proposes a conceptualization of the condition in a 28-year-old individual and describes a treatment approach using cognitive-behavioral techniques, most notably exposure responsive prevention as used in the treatment of obsessive

Kleptomania: comorbid psychiatric diagnosis in patients and their families.

OBJECTIVES: Kleptomania, defined by DSM-IV as the inability to resist the impulse to steal objects which are not needed for personal use or for their monetary value, may reflect a form of obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorder and/or affective spectrum disorder. METHODS: Twenty-one kleptomanic patients and 57 first-degree relatives completed a semistructured DSM-IV-based interview and questionnaires. Questionnaires are: the HDRS-17 (the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression), the HARS (Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety), the Y-BOCS (Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale), the YMRS (Young Mania

Sexual disorders not otherwise specified: compulsive, addictive, or impulsive?

Paraphilias are recurrent and intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors generally involving nonhuman objects. These paraphilias cause the suffering or humiliation of the patient or patient's partner, or children, or other nonconsenting persons. However, in many patients symptoms involve more culturally acceptable patterns (eg, repetitive masturbation, Internet pornography); such hypersexual symptoms have been labeled as compulsive, addictive, or impulsive. Growing evidence supports the existence of a discrete syndrome characterized by recurrent and intense sexually arousi

Intracranial electrophysiological biomarkers of compulsivity in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

There is an emerging need for objective neural biomarkers of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) to improve the efficacy of neuromodulatory interventions, most notably deep-brain stimulation (DBS), and develop closed-loop stimulation paradigms. Preliminary data suggest that such biomarkers may be derived from local field potentials (LFPs) recorded in individual patients implanted with sensing DBS devices. However, reliable LFP signatures that are generalizable across OCD patients have yet to be identified. Here, we relate LFPs recorded from sensing DBS electrodes in different basal-ganglia str

Basal Ganglia volumes in patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Despite strong circumstantial evidence that the pathophysiology of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (TS) involves structural and functional disturbances of the basal ganglia, inconsistent findings from relatively small in vivo TS imaging studies have supported contradictory conclusions concerning the role of abnormal anatomical characteristics of the basal ganglia in the pathophysiology of TS. METHODS: Basal ganglia volumes were measured on high-resolution magnetic resonance images acquired for 154 children and adults with TS and 130 healthy control subjects. Repeated-measures analy

Management Challenges of Recurrent Foreign Body Ingestions in a Psychiatric Patient: A Case Report.

Intentional foreign body ingestions (FBIs) are commonly seen in adult patients with intellectual disabilities, substance use, severe psychiatric conditions, or external motivations, but these cases are rarely reported in the psychiatric literature. We present the case of a patient with an extensive history of FBIs and suicide attempts and a multitude of psychiatric diagnoses including borderline personality disorder, major depressive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder from significant abuse in foster care, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and pica. Compulsive Sexual Behavior Online and Non-online in Adult Male Patients and Healthy Controls: Comparison in Sociodemographic, Clinical, and Personality Variables.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Compulsive sexual behavior (CSB) is characterized by a persistent pattern of failure to control sexual impulses, resulting in repetitive sexual behavior over a prolonged period that causes marked discomfort in personal, family, social, school, work or in other functional areas. The evolution of the worldwide incidence of this disorder warrants further studies focused on examining the characteristics of the affected people. The purpose of this study was to compare online compulsive sexual behavior (when the problematic sexual practices were online) and non-online compulsive

"Dude, you don't have Tourette's:" Tourette's syndrome, beyond the tics.

While coprolalia is the most well-known symptom of Tourette's syndrome (TS), it affects only a minority of persons with the condition. TS is a chronic neurobiological condition consisting of vocal and motor tics. Many children with TS have associated obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and/or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), both of which can interfere with school, peer, and family functioning more than the tics themselves. The article distinguishes TS from other tic disorders and reviews literature on epidemiology, etiology, clinical course, and diagnostic and treatment issues

Not all personal definitions of healthy eating are linked to orthorexic behaviors among French college women. A cluster analysis study.

PURPOSE: This study represents a first attempt to explore the typology of French female young adults based on personal definitions of healthy eating and to examine inter-group differences regarding their tendencies towards Orthorexia Nervosa (ON), eating disordered (ED) and obsessive-compulsive (OC) behaviors. METHOD: 362 female adults (Mage = 23.43, SD = 3.82) completed a 40-item questionnaire assessing personal definitions of healthy eating, the Eating Habits Questionnaire, the Eating-Disorders Inventory-3 and the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised. RESULTS: Exploratory factor analysis

[Clinico-genealogic study of schizophrenia with a predominantly obsessive course].

A clinico-genealogic study of 66 patients with neurosis-like schizophrenia showed a certain genetic heterogeneity of schizophrenia with obsessions. In cases of an unfavourable course of the schizophrenic process in a proband (a malignant disease of obsessions), the familial background was largely determined by disturbances of the schizophrenic spectrum. In cases of a slow progression of the disease (slowly progressive pseudoneurotic schizophrenia), the hereditary background was characterized by a great variability of psychopathological manifestations. Along with schizophrenia-related abnormali

[Adolescent eating disorders].

Anorexia and Bulimia nervosa are common psychiatric disorders in adolescent girls. In discrepancy to ICD-10 and DSM-IV we would propose the 10th BMI percentile as weight criterium for anorexia nervosa. Both disorders have a high somatic and psychiatric comorbidity; the most severe complication at long term follow-up is osteoporosis. The most prevalent psychiatric disorders are affective disorders, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder and substance abuse. There is undoubtedly a genetic predisposition and a range of general and personal environmental risk factors. Treatment of adolescent ea

Sex-related and non-sex-related comorbidity subtypes of tic disorders: a latent class approach.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Recent evidence suggests that there may be more than one Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS)/tic disorder phenotype. However, little is known about the common patterns of these GTS/tic disorder-related comorbidities. In addition, sex-specific phenomenological data of GTS/tic disorder-affected adults are rare. Therefore, this community-based study used latent class analyses (LCA) to investigate sex-related and non-sex-related subtypes of GTS/tic disorders and their most common comorbidities. METHODS: The data were drawn from the PsyCoLaus study (n = 3691), a population

Neurobehavioral disorders locked in Alcatraz: case reports on three famous inmates.

The Alcatraz prison, with its picturesque surroundings and fascinating life stories of its inmates, has been the subject of a number of films and publications. The authors take a closer look at the biographies of "Al Capone", Robert "Birdman" Stroud and "Mickey" Cohen. These legendary American mobsters shared not only a history at "The Rock", but also a history of neuropsychiatric diseases, ranging from neurosyphilis to anti-social, borderline and obsessive-compulsive personality disorders.
