Changes in the Eye Microbiota Associated with Contact Lens Wearing.

UNLABELLED: Wearing contact lenses has been identified as a risk factor for the development of eye conditions such as giant papillary conjunctivitis and keratitis. We hypothesized that wearing contact lenses is associated with changes in the ocular microbiota. We compared the bacterial communities of the conjunctiva and skin under the eye from 58 subjects and analyzed samples from 20 subjects (9 lens wearers and 11 non-lens wearers) taken at 3 time points using a 16S rRNA gene-based sequencing technique (V4 region; Illumina MiSeq). We found that using anesthetic eye drops before sampling decre

Fogging low concentrated organic acid in a fattening pig unit - Effect on animal health and microclimate.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: In intensive pig production aerial contaminates are potential hazards for the health of animals and humans. In this study, the effect of fogging a low concentrated tartaric acid solution on pigs' health, environmental and hygiene parameters were evaluated in an inhabited fattening unit. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Pigs were housed in separate units (control group n=109 and experimental group n=110). During the whole fattening period, twice a week at 48 hour intervals, a 0.1% tartaric acid solution was aerosolized by a cold-fogging system for 20 minutes in the experimenta

Proteus mirabilis and its role in dacryocystitis.

PURPOSE: Dacryocystitis is a common inflammation of the lacrimal sac, usually from an underlying bacterial infection. Most cases can be attributed to common ocular flora such as Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pneumoniae; however, uncommon bacterial causes such as Proteus mirabilis can still occur. P. mirabilis is a gram-negative bacillus that is found abundantly in people who have undergone long-term catheterization and is uncommonly found in or around the eyes except in people who have undergone long-term catheterization. Proteus species can cause conjunctivitis, canaliculitis, and da

A screening for antimicrobial activities of Caribbean herbal remedies.

BACKGROUND: The TRAMIL program aims to understand, validate and expand health practices based on the use of medicinal plants in the Caribbean, which is a "biodiversity hotspot" due to high species endemism, intense development pressure and habitat loss. The antibacterial activity was examined for thirteen plant species from several genera that were identified as a result of TRAMIL ethnopharmacological surveys or were reported in ethnobotanical accounts from Puerto Rico. The aim of this study was to validate the traditional use of these plant species for the treatment of bacterial infections, s

Corneal cross-linking in 9 horses with ulcerative keratitis.

BACKGROUND: Corneal ulcers are one of the most common eye problems in the horse and can cause varying degrees of visual impairment. Secondary infection and protease activity causing melting of the corneal stroma are always concerns in patients with corneal ulcers. Corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL), induced by illumination of the corneal stroma with ultraviolet light (UVA) after instillation of riboflavin (vitamin B2) eye drops, introduces crosslinks which stabilize melting corneas, and has been used to successfully treat infectious ulcerative keratitis in human patients. Therefore we decide

A metalloproteinase secreted by Streptococcus pneumoniae removes membrane mucin MUC16 from the epithelial glycocalyx barrier.

The majority of bacterial infections occur across wet-surfaced mucosal epithelia, including those that cover the eye, respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract and genitourinary tract. The apical surface of all these mucosal epithelia is covered by a heavily glycosylated glycocalyx, a major component of which are membrane-associated mucins (MAMs). MAMs form a barrier that serves as one of the first lines of defense against invading bacteria. While opportunistic bacteria rely on pre-existing defects or wounds to gain entry to epithelia, non opportunistic bacteria, especially the epidemic diseas

[Rhinovirus infections in hospitalized children: a 3-year study].

BACKGROUND: Rhinoviruses (RH) are responsible for acute respiratory illnesses, mainly in the upper respiratory tract. POPULATION AND METHODS: 3,152 children aged under 16 years, admitted to the Paediatrics department of the University Hospital Centre of Poitiers from January 1, 1993 to December 31, 1995 with ear, nose and throat (ENT) and/or respiratory symptoms were systematically investigated. One hundred and forty-five RH strains were isolated from nasopharyngeal secretions of 87 boys and 58 girls (mean age: 20.3 months). Among these, 92 (63.4%) were less than 1 year of age. Bacteriologica

Four cases of Raoultella planticola conjunctivitis.

AIMS: This brief report of four cases of conjunctivitis caused by Raoultella planticola provides a description of possibly the first documented cases of this eye infection. METHODS: The laboratory database and medical records were used to trace all the R. planticola-positive conjunctival swabs obtained in our institution. Four cases were identified and available relevant information was obtained. RESULTS: This organism causes a non-specific purulent conjunctivitis that seems to have a benign course and tends to be responsive to a topical fluoroquinolone. CONCLUSIONS: The possibility of atyp

[Chlamydia pneumoniae infection in a family].

UNLABELLED: HISTORY AND SYMPTOMS: For 11 weeks a 38-year-old woman had suffered from a respiratory infection with peribronchitis, nocturnal coughing fits and earache. INVESTIGATIONS, TREATMENT AND COURSE: The Chlamydia-CFR titre was raised. Subsequent throat swabs of her husband and two daughters grew Chlamydia pneumoniae (C.p.), but not in her case; 5 days earlier she had been started on roxithromycin. 3 weeks before the patient fell ill her two daughters had a flu-like illness with cough and subfebrile temperature and her husband also had flu-like symptoms, which regressed after few days. Staphylococcus caprae Prosthetic Joint Infection Treated With Bacteriophage: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic joint infection results in significant morbidity and mortality, often requiring multiple surgeries in conjunction with antibiotic therapy. While component exchange is often successful, in many cases the patient is too ill to undergo surgery. Bacteriophages are viruses that infect bacteria and are incredibly specific to their target, infecting bacterial cells without impact on the host. Success rates for treatment with bacteriophage approach 90%, but these treatments are not yet approved for widespread use. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 66-year-old male w

Isolation of Bacterial RNA from Foods Inoculated with Pathogens.

One strategy bacteria use to acclimate to changing environmental conditions is modulation of gene expression. Alterations in gene expression are indicative of activation or repression of certain physiological responses. In order to understand which genetic responses are utilized to cope with various environmental conditions by analyzing transcriptomes, obtaining RNA of high quality, yield, and integrity is paramount. Here, we describe an acid phenol-chloroform method employed to extract RNA from laboratory grown cell cultures, as well as cultures inoculated onto complex matrices such as lettuc

Artificial Urine for Teaching Urinalysis Concepts and Diagnosis of Urinary Tract Infection in the Medical Microbiology Laboratory.

Dipstick urinalysis is an informative, quick, cost-effective and non-invasive diagnostic tool that is useful in clinical practice for the diagnosis of urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney diseases, and diabetes. We used dipstick urinalysis as a hands-on microbiology laboratory exercise to reinforce student learning about UTIs with a particular focus on cystitis, which is a common bacterial infection. To avoid exposure to potentially contaminated human urine samples, we prepared artificial urine using easily acquired and affordable ingredients, which allowed less-experienced students to perf

Establishment of a method to rapidly assay bacterial persister metabolism.

Bacterial persisters exhibit an extraordinary tolerance to antibiotics that is dependent on their metabolic state. Although persister metabolism promises to be a rich source of antipersister strategies, there is relatively little known about the metabolism of these rare and transient phenotypic variants. To address this knowledge gap, we explored the use of several techniques, and we found that only one measured persister metabolism. This assay was based on the phenomenon of metabolite-enabled aminoglycoside killing of persisters, and we used it to characterize the metabolic heterogeneity of d

Elastase-producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa degrade plasma proteins and extracellular products of human skin and fibroblasts, and inhibit fibroblast growth.

Leg ulcers of venous origin represent a disease affecting 0.1-0.2% of the population. It is known that almost all chronic ulcers are colonized by different bacteria, such as staphylococci, enterococci and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. We here report that P. aeruginosa, expressing the major metalloproteinase elastase, induces degradation of complement C3, various antiproteinases, kininogens, fibroblast proteins, and proteoglycans (PG) in vitro, thus mimicking proteolytic activity previously identified in chronic ulcer fluid in vivo. Elastase-producing P. aeruginosa isolates were shown to significantl

Necrotizing fasciitis after peritonsillar abscess in an immunocompetent patient.

Cervical necrotizing fasciitis (CNF) is a rapidly progressive, severe bacterial infection of the fascial planes of the head and neck. Group A beta haemolytic Streptococcus spp. (GABHS), Staphylococcus spp., or obligatory anaerobic bacteria are the most common causative pathogens. The disease usually results from a dental source or facial trauma. Extensive fascial necrosis and severe systemic toxicity are common manifestations of CNF. Review of the literature reveals only seven such cases, with four successful outcomes. The authors present the case of a 50-year-old immunocompetent female with C

Infections in Hospitalized Cancer Patients.

Cancer patients are at an increased risk of developing infections that are primarily treatment-driven but may also be malignancy-driven. While cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery have been known to improve malignancy morbidity and mortality, they also have the potential to weaken immune defenses and induce periods of severe cytopenia. These adverse effects pave the way for opportunistic infections to complicate a hospitalized cancer patient's clinical course. Understanding the risk each patient inherently has for developing a bacterial, fungal, or viral infection

Benzoyl peroxide development, pharmacology, formulation and clinical uses in topical fixed-combinations.

Benzoyl peroxide (BPO) is a commonly used and highly effective topical treatment for acne that is available in concentrations from 2.5-10%. The compound is not associated with bacterial resistance, and published acne treatment guidelines recommend BPO in conjunction with the long-term use of both topical and systemic antibiotics. A number of combination products containing antibiotics, BPO and/or retinoids are available and useful for tailoring treatment to the needs of each patient over the course of what is often a chronic condition. Fixed combinations of BPO and antibiotics or retinoids add

[Echocardiographic diagnosis of Valsalva's sinus aneurysm].

Valsalva's sinus aneurysm is a congenital heart disease that may occur both as isolated abnormality or combined with other ailments. The present paper summarizes the results of the use in 20 patients of non-invasive research methods, namely ultrasound cardiography and Doppler's cardiography, in the diagnosis of Valsalva's sinus aneurysms and concomitant heart diseases. Analysis of the findings has shown that the use of ultrasound cardiography in conjunction with pulse Doppler's cardiography permits demonstration with a high accuracy of the direct signs of Valsalva's sinus aneurysm without use
