Eleven preschool children with febrile convulsions or epilepsy were started on phenobarbital. Before treatment was started and at regular intervals after the onset of medication up to one year psychological tests were applied and the behaviour of the children analyzed. The plasma levels of phenobarbital were recorded. A transient deterioration of fine motor functions and behavioural disturbances were found in most children during the first weeks and months. The problems subsided thereafter and at one year follow up the drug-induced changes had disappeared. The need for extended studies is unde

In 1910 the French neurologist Henry Meige described in detail a disorder characterized chiefly by symmetric dystonic spasms of the facial muscles, which he called "spasm facial median." Cases with this disorder are rare, and frequently misdiagnosed and inappropriately treated. We report here a translation of Meige's original description of "spasm facial median." We hope that this translation will make it easier to recognize and diagnose this disorder and that it will stimulate greater interest in this unusual syndrome.

A survey by questionnaire of all senior psychiatrists in the Wessex Region showed that they considered depressive psychosis to be the major indication for electric convulsion therapy (ECT). A good clinical response was thought to be predicted by the presence of psychomotor retardation, depressive delusions, depressed mood, early morning wakening, diurnal variation, loss of appetite, and agitation. ECT was judged to be extremely useful for treating mania and acute undifferentiated, catatonic, and paranoid schizophrenia; of some use in hypochondriasis; but of little value or contraindicated when

The effect of compression in heliox atmospheres on heart rate in mice and in rats has been explored. In the absence of high-pressure neurological syndrome (NPNS) convulsions, the general relations between heart rate and pressure in mice from 14 days old to adulthood, as well as in 6- to 8-day-old rats, resemble each other, and also the results reported by others for liquid-breathing mice. Rats, 29 days old and adult, are different in that little bradycardia is observed. Type I (clonic) HPNS seizures are not associated with any additional changes in heart rate. Type II (tonic) seizures are inva

Two men undergoing chronic hemodialysis sustained unusual fractures during grand mal convulsions. Both patients showed radiologic evidence of renal osteodystrophy. In one, the fractures involved both femoral necks. In the other, a comminuted fracture occurred in the inferior portion of the left scapula.

The influence of Ethrane upon electro shock and pentylenetetrazol-induced convulsions was studied in mice. Similar to other inhalation anaesthetics and to barbiturates Ethrane exerts a powerful anticonvulsive activity. There is a dose response relationship between the rate of electro shock (20 mA/0.2 sec) induced convulsions and inspiratory Ethrane concentration, convulsions being completely prevented by 1.5 vol.-percent of Ethrane. The LD(50) of pentylentetrazol increases five fold under a 2 vol.-percent Ethrane anaesthesia.
