A rare case of Corynebacterium striatum endocarditis on a bioprosthetic aortic valve replacement, treated medically, is reported. The presentation was subacute, and initially endocarditis screening was negative. Because of the failure of symptoms to settle further screening was performed which confirmed the organism in several sets of blood cultures. This emphasises the importance of persistent screening for endocarditis if the history raises any suspicion of this potentially serious infection, especially in the presence of prosthetic valves.

Hyperammonemia has been reported rarely in the pediatric age group in systemically ill patients. All cases resulted from infections with urea splitting organisms, which are more common among patients who have undergone surgical procedures on the urinary tract. The authors report for the first time in the pediatric literature, one patient who presented with hyperammonemic encephalopathy that resulted from urinary tract infection with Staphylococcus epidermidis and Corynebacterium sp.

Nocardioform actinomycetes are Gram-positive bacteria with high G+C content. Several species of Mycobacterium, Corynebacterium, Nocardia and Rhodococcus are important human or animal pathogens. Transposon mutagenesis and homologous recombination are powerful genetic tools used for the identification of pathogenicity determinants. Transposable elements with potential application to mutagenize pathogenic nocardioform actinomycetes are described. Homologous recombination experiments which have been recently achieved in mycobacteria and related actinomycetes are commented on.

During an outbreak of diphtheria or ulcerative stomatitis in young Boergoat kids Fusobacterium necrophorum was consistently isolated under anaerobic cultural conditions from material taken from the edges of the ulcerative lesions from all of the cases examined. Corynebacterium pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Actinobacillus lignieresi, Moraxella spp. and Lactobacillus spp. were also isolated anaerobically and/or aerobically. The typical symptoms and lesions were confirmed to the mouth, tongue and throat regions.

This study describes an outbreak of ulcerative posthitis that eventually affected 76 of 80 of rams in a flock of Rasa Aragonesa sheep on a legume-rich diet.
