Diphyllobothriosis, a fish-borne zoonosis in South America, is mainly caused by the Pacific broad tapeworm Adenocephalus pacificus Nybelin, 1931, a parasite of considerable concern in fishery resources due to its impact on public health. A new diphyllobothrid, Diphyllobothrium sprakeri Hernández-Orts et al. Parasites Vectors 14:219, 2021, was recently described from sea lions from the Pacific Coast, but marine fish acting as intermediate hosts are unknown. The objective of this study was to confirm the presence of plerocercoid larvae of Diphyllobothriidae Lühe, 1910 (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriide

Scaphanocephalus is a small trematode genus belonging to the family Opistorchiidae. The genus currently contains only three species associated with marine fish as intermediate hosts and fish-eating birds as definitive hosts. Here, specimens of Scaphanocephalus were collected from the Osprey, Pandion haliaetus, and the White mullet, Mugil curema in the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico. We report for the first-time DNA sequences of adult specimens of Scaphanocephalus, particularly S. expansus, as well as a sequence of a different species sampled as metacercaria. Morphological comparisons of Scaphanocep

Dirofilaria immitis, the causative agent of dog heartworm disease, is an important cause of canine morbidity and mortality, expensive to treat, and severe infections are often fatal. Much is known about the pathogen in the canine host, yet little is known on the basic ecology of the nematode in the mosquito vector. Thus, to evaluate the effectiveness of collection techniques on ability to capture dog heartworm-infected mosquitoes (Diptera Culicidae), we conducted a field study spanning 111 wk. Four methods were used: two aspirators types, sweep netting, and a CDC trap. All sites had canines pr

Dear Editor-in-Chief, In Annals of Parasitology 2021, 67(1), 55-65, a paper entitled "Genetic characterization and phylogenetic analysis of Fasciola species based on ITS2 gene sequence, with first molecular evidence of intermediate Fasciola from water buffaloes in Aswan, Egypt" was published with great interest [1]. After reading the article carefully and critically, we think some points should be noted. Fasciola species are meiotically functional diploid, can produce sperm and temporarily and store in the seminal vesicles. This type is named spermic fluke [2]. On the other hand, intermediate

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the epidemiological and molecular aspects of dicrocoeliosis in extensive sheep farms.
METHODS: From 2013 to 2014, copromicroscopical analyses in 190 dairy sheep farms and anatomo-pathological inspections in six slaughterhouses were carried in Sardinia, Italy. Rectal faecal samples were analyzed using the FLOTAC® method, and anatomo-pathological examinations were based on detecting thickened terminal bile ducts (TTBDs). In addition, genetic analyses were conducted on representative DNA samples of adult Dicrocoelium spp.
RESULTS: Ninety-seven (51.1%) out of

Paradiplozoon yunnanensis n. sp. (Monogenea, Diplozoidae) is described from the gills of Sikukia gudgeri Smith, 1931 (Cyprinidae) collected from Jinghong Basin, a tributary of the international Lancang-Mekong River. This is the first diplozoid species from S. gudgeri and its description increases the number of Paradiplozoon species recorded in China to 25. The new species is distinguished from congeners by a combination of morphological and molecular features. The anterior end of the median plate is thickened in the marginal area and a narrow rectangular trapeze spur connects to the anterior j

BACKGROUND: The excessive and uncontrolled use of anthelmintics, e.g. ivermectin (IVM) for the treatment of livestock parasites has led to widespread resistance in gastrointestinal nematodes, such as Haemonchus contortus. There is an urgent need for better management of drug-use in nematode control and development of novel anthelmintics. Discovery and identification of anthelmintic resistance-associate molecules/markers can provide a basis for rational anthelmintics-use and development of novel drugs. Recent studies have shown that ivermectin resistance in H. contortus is likely to be multi-ge

Gurltia paralysans is a poorly documented metastrongyloid nematode of cats, which mainly parasitizes the veins in the spinal cord subarachnoid space and parenchyma. Parasitic paraparesis caused by G. paralysans is a lesser-known spinal cord disease affecting domestic and wild felids of South America. Regions where feline gurltiosis is endemic include the southern parts of Chile and Argentina. Intra vitam diagnosis of feline gurltiosis remains challenging and is based primarily on neurological signs and the exclusion of other ethiologies for feline myelopathies. In view of the lack of informati

An important aspect influencing host specificity is a parasite's compatibility, or ability, to infect a potential host. Here, we examine the compatibility between different trematode genotypes of the same species and several host species. To execute this study, we developed a synthetic workflow which combines the use of a fluorescent dye and standard molecular techniques to study host-parasite interactions and host specificity. The utility of the fluorescent dye, BIODIPY FL C₁₂, was evaluated to label and track larval trematodes during experimental infections using the Cerithidea californica-t

Recently we developed the genus-specific markers of the avian schistosomes of the genus Trichobilharzia, the causative agents of human cercarial dermatitis. The 7 novel genome sequences of T. franki, T. regenti, and T. szidati revealed similarity with genome repeat region of African schistosome Schistosoma mansoni. In the present work we analyzed the 37 new T. szidati sequences to study intragenome variability and host specificity for the parasite from three localities of East Europe. DNAs were isolated from cercariae or single sporocysts obtained from 6 lymnaeid snails Lymnaea stagnalis and L

BACKGROUND: Anisakiasis is an important fish-borne zoonosis provoked by larval stages of nematodes belonging to the genus Anisakis. The detection and identification of human infections is difficult. This is due to: a) the low specificity of the clinical features and symptomatology related to human infections; b) the paucity of diagnostic features of larvae found in granulomatous lesions characteristic of "invasive anisakiasis"; and c) the lack morphological characters diagnostic at the specific level when larvae of Anisakis are detected. Thus, molecular-based diagnostic approaches are warrante

The distribution of Schistosoma genotypes among individuals in snail populations provides insights regarding the dynamics of transmission and compatibility between schistosome and snail hosts. A survey of Biomphalaria alexandrina from Damietta (Nile Delta, Egypt), an area subjected to persistent schistosomiasis control efforts, provided only 17 snails infected with Schistosoma mansoni (6.1% overall prevalence), each shown by microsatellite analysis to have a single genotype infection. By contrast, recent studies of uncontrolled S. mansoni transmission foci in Kenya revealed that 4.3% Biomphala

After some 20 years experience it is generally agreed that chemotherapy against schistosomiasis, a parasitic disease which should be considered a consequence of a chronic infection, does have significant limitations. In particular, chemotherapy does not affect transmission of the infection or the high re-infection rates and so limits the success by demanding frequently re-scheduled mass treatments. For this reason, a complementary approach that can be integrated and could sustain chemotherapy-based control programs, i.e. vaccination, is very much needed. The rationale is that drug treatment wo

Until recently infection of humans with Oesophagostomum bifurcum was regarded as a rare zoonosis. But in northern Togo and Ghana its prevalence is 50% or more in certain villages. Diagnosis is hampered by the fact that the eggs of O. bifurcum are morphologically identical to those of the hookworm Necator americanus. Stools have to be cultured for 7 days to allow eggs to hatch to the characteristic third-stage (L3) larvae. We evaluated the applicability of specific polymerase chain reactions (PCRs) to amplify DNA from faecal samples as an alternative method for the differential diagnosis of the

The aim of the present study was to estimate the prevalence and risk factors of Dirofilaria immitis infection in dogs from Dandong, China. A total of 886 dogs were examined for D. immitis infection by microscopic examination and PCR, indicating that the prevalence was 16.6% (213/886) and 24.0% (147/886), respectively. The odds of infection were significantly higher in older dogs and dogs sheltered in outdoor, compared to the younger ones and ones sheltered in indoor. No significant difference of infection was observed in different genders, and between pure breed and cross-breed dogs in the sam

No effective vaccine exists for the human parasitic disease, schistosomiasis. We have targeted a functionally important antigen, Sm-p80 as a vaccine candidate because of its consistent immunogenicity, protective potential and important role in the immune evasion process. In this study we report that a Sm-p80-based DNA vaccine formulation confers 59% reduction in worm burden in mice. Animals immunized with Sm-p80-pcDNA3 exhibited a decrease in egg production by 84%. Sm-p80 DNA elicited strong immune responses that include IgG2A and IgG2B antibody isotypes in vaccinated animals. Splenocytes prol

Although DNA vaccines have several advantages over conventional vaccines, antibody production and protection are often not adequate, particularly in single plasmid vaccine formulation. In the present study we evaluated the efficacy of a cocktail vaccine based on plasmids encoding larval (L3) stage-specific Brugia malayi abundant larval transcript (BmALT-2) and antioxidant detoxification enzyme B. malayi thioredoxin peroxidase (BmTPX) to induce antibodies, protective efficacy and cell-mediated immune response in mice. Mice immunized with cocktail DNA vaccines containing the pVAX ALT-2+TPX devel

The aim of this study was to carry out a serological and molecular survey for the presence of Dirofilaria immitis infection in stray cats using an ELISA kit and PCR assay. One hundred and fifty-five stray cats (77 females and 78 males) in Gyunggi province in South Korea, were used in this study. Four (2.6%) tested with the ELISA kit showed a positive reaction, and all positive samples by the ELISA kit showed a positive reaction by PCR analysis. No significant difference was observed between the male (2.6%) and female (2.6%) cat groups by ELISA kit. The positive rates for dirofilariosis were 2.

We describe Isorchis cannoni n. sp. from the rabbitfishes Siganus fuscescens (Houttuyn) and Siganus lineatus (Valenciennes) (Siganidae) collected off Heron Island, southern Great Barrier Reef, Australia and, using molecular data, demonstrate that 'Cercariae queenslandae II' of Cannon (1978) from the gastropod Clypeomorus batillariaeformis Habe & Kosuge (Cerithiidae) is the larval form of this new species. The cercariae of I. cannoni n. sp. develop in rediae, encyst in the environment after emergence, and are inferred to then be consumed by grazing rabbitfish. Additionally, we provide a new rep
