Best Practices for Obstetric Care of Deaf Patients.

BACKGROUND: Deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) women face significant health care disparities, including higher rates of gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, preterm birth, and unintended pregnancy compared with the general population. PROBLEM: DHH women encounter significant barriers to obstetric care, including inadequate communication access, insufficient availability of qualified interpreters, and lack of provider training in caring for DHH patients. APPROACH: Effective communication, culturally competent, and patient-centered care can address existing disparities and improve outcomes for DHH

Health literacy of the Deaf community: a scoping review.

This scoping review examined health literacy among Deaf populations and identified gaps in current evidence. A systemic search of PubMed, Excerpta Medica Database, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and Cochrane was conducted from database inception to December 31, 2024. English-language quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods studies reporting from the perspective of Deaf individuals of any age were included, alongside studies evaluating educational interventions. Data were charted using a standardized extraction framework and analysed thematically. Fifty-seven stu

Retinotopic remapping of the visual system in deaf adults.

The absence of input from one sense can lead to a greater emphasis on the remaining senses, resulting in heightened performance. Numerous behavioral studies demonstrate that adults who have been deaf from an early age have superior visual sensitivity, particularly to far-peripheral stimuli. We asked whether the increased demand on peripheral vision throughout development that comes with early, profound deafness might be reflected in changes in early visual brain structures. Using functional MRI, we mapped visual field representations in 16 early, profoundly D/deaf adults and 16 hearing age-mat…

[Establishment and application progress of deaf animal models].

Deafness as the most prevalent sensory defect disease, seriously affects personal life and social development, and is a major public health challenge that needs to be addressed urgently. Occupational noise-induced deafness has become the second most common occupational disease in China and has attracted much attention. Relevant animal experimental studies can provide a basis for the prevention and control of the disease. This article respectively introduces the animal strain selection, modeling methods, model identification indicators, and model applications of animal models for conductive dea…

Preliminary development of the deaf childhood experiences scale.

We describe here the initial creation and validation of a tool designed to quantify certain unique life experiences of deaf individuals. The Deaf Childhood Experiences Scale (DCES) aims to provide empirical data on uniquely deaf life factors with the long-term goal of better understanding education, health, and quality of life outcomes among deaf populations. The methodology involved a mixed-methods approach of qualitative interviews with deaf community members to inform the creation of a quantitative assessment. This first version of the DCES comprises two main constructs-Language and Access,

Interembodiment and language: Deaf language practices as resistance.

This article approaches language as both a vehicle for interembodiment and as a fundamentally interembodied process. Drawing from approximately 18 months of ethnographic fieldwork with deaf immigrants in the northeast United States, this article explores how interembodiment emerges through language forms and practices; and how deaf language practices entangle interlocutors, sometimes bodily, with others. As intelligibility can only be achieved relationally, this article likewise asserts language as a fundamentally interembodied process. Meaning in communicative encounters is made among and acr

The Inheritance of Hearing Loss and Deafness: A Historical Perspective.

If the term "genetics" is a relatively recent proposition, introduced in 1905 by English biologist William Bateson, who rediscovered and spread in the scientific community Mendel's principles of inheritance, since the dawn of human civilization the influence of heredity has been recognized, especially in agricultural crops and animal breeding. And, later, in familial dynasties. In this concise review, we outline the evolution of the idea of hereditary hearing loss, up to the current knowledge of molecular genetics and epigenetics.

Motor adaptation in deaf and hearing native signers.

Previous studies have suggested that deafness could lead to deficits in motor skills and other body-related abilities. However, the literature regarding motor skills in deaf adults is scarce and existing studies often included participants with heterogeneous language backgrounds and deafness etiologies, thus making it difficult to delineate the effects of deafness. In this study, we investigated motor learning in deaf native signers and hearing nonsigners. To isolate the effects of deafness and those of acquiring a signed language, we additionally tested a group of hearing native signers. Two …

The impact of print exposure on deaf student literacy.

Recent studies suggest that benefiting early from both a cochlear implant (CI) and exposure to cued speech (CS, support system for the perception of oral language) positively impacts deaf children's speech perception, speech intelligibility, and reading. This study aims to show how: 1/CS-based speech perception ("cue reading"), and speech intelligibility might also constitute precise measures for determining the impact of CI and CS on deaf students' literary performance; 2/print exposure might also be a predictive factor in this equation. We conducted regression analyses to examine the impact

Why I No Longer Teach Deaf Students.

There is a nationwide shortage of qualified Teachers of Deaf (TOD) and teacher attrition is an important component of the shortage. This qualitative research study examines the experiences of thirty-three former TODs in the United States who left their teaching positions in the last decade and the reasons why they resigned. Data sources include open-ended survey questions and focus groups. While TODs experienced the concept of "the last straw," themes in the reasons they exited the field included: (1) Work life's adverse effects on personal well-being, (2) Lack of support from the school commu

Reading Habits of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Adults.

Few studies exist on the reading habits of the deaf population, and most of those that do were published more than 20 years ago. Hence, changes in reading habits due to the availability to the deaf population of online reading material and portable electronic devices have likely occurred. Additionally, in the hearing population, confinement causes changes in reading habits. We used an online questionnaire to compare the reading habits of 102 deaf and hard of hearing adult residents of Spain both before and during COVID-19 confinement. In general, more reading occurred during confinement, altho

Executive Function in Deaf Native Signing Children.

The aim of this study is twofold: To examine if deafness is invariably associated with deficits in executive function (EF) and to investigate the relationship between sign language proficiency and EF in deaf children of deaf parents with early exposure to a sign language. It is also the first study of EF in children acquiring Polish Sign Language. Even though the mothers of the deaf children (N = 20) had lower levels of education compared with the mothers of a hearing control group, the children performed similarly to their hearing peers (N = 20) on a variety of EF task-based assessments. Only…

Spoken Language Bilingualism in the Education of Deaf Learners.

For much of the history of deaf education, spoken language bilingualism was not considered a viable goal. It was believed that given the challenges of meaningful auditory access, age-appropriate development in even one language would be daunting. However, implementation of universal newborn hearing screening during the early 2000s, along with early fitting of hearing technologies, including cochlear implants, has afforded significantly improved access to spoken language during the critical early years of language acquisition for most deaf children. In this context, it is timely to reconsider t

Development of the Multidimensional Inventory of Deaf Acculturative Stress.

Deaf adults may experience acculturative stress as they navigate within and between the Hearing and Deaf communities. However, no measure has been developed to assess levels of deaf acculturative stress. This study aimed to develop the Multidimensional Inventory of Deaf Acculturative Stress (MIDAS). The MIDAS was developed through a sequential and iterative scale development procedure and then tested on a sample of 104 deaf adults across the United States (age range = 18-79; 74% female). Principal component analyses were run for item refinement and selection. The final analyses yielded four fa
