Poisonings resulting from DEET are rarely encountered in companion animals. In human patients, DEET toxicosis has been associated with the development of a toxic encephalopathy characterized by tremors, seizures, behavioral changes, and abnormal movements. Generally, DEET toxicosis in companion animals is of short duration and is characterized by vomiting, tremors, ataxia, and excitation. Treatment for DEET toxicosis includes symptomatic therapy and decontamination.

We describe a 64-year old patient who was admitted comatose to the medical emergency department. After excluding relevant differential diagnoses and considering the clinical picture of a "sedative toxidrome" a presumable diagnosis of an intoxication with an unknown sedative substance was made. Phenobarbital was detected in the blood. Decontamination procedures and therapy in patients with phenobarbital intoxication are delineated and discussed.

Cell cultures treated with tylosin tartrate and kanamycin sulphate antibiotics were studied in relation to the cell growth rate, the susceptibility to the foot-and-mouth disease virus and to the microorganism eradication. These treatments did not affect the cell growth rate and the cell behavior to the viral infection. On the other hand, the decontamination of the intracytoplasmatic formas of mycoplasma-like organism was not observed.
