Cesarean section is associated with increased risk of postpartum depressive symptoms in Japan: the Kyushu Okinawa Maternal and Child Health Study.

BACKGROUND: The association between cesarean section and the risk of postpartum depressive symptoms remains controversial. The present prebirth cohort study examined this issue in Japan. METHODS: Study subjects were 1310 women. Information under study was obtained using a self-administered questionnaire. Postpartum depressive symptoms were defined as a total Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale score of nine or higher between three and four months postpartum. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to adjust for age, body mass index, gestational weeks at baseline, gestational weeks

Maternal prenatal stress and infant temperament at one year: exploring the mediating role of postpartum depression in the French EDEN cohort.

PURPOSE: Prenatal stress affects up to 74% of expectant mothers and has been implicated in shaping early child development. This study aims to examine the associations between both subjective (self-reported) and objective prenatal stress and infant temperament at 12 months of age. Additionally, we investigate whether maternal postpartum depression (PPD) mediates these associations. METHODS: We analyzed data from 1,510 mother-infant dyads in the French EDEN birth cohort. Prenatal stress was assessed using the State Anxiety Inventory (STAI), the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Sca

Impact of maternal postpartum depression on neurodevelopment of preterm infants during the first year of corrected age: A prospective longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants are at increased risk of neurodevelopmental difficulties, and maternal depressive symptoms may further affect early developmental outcomes. However, their longitudinal relationship remains unclear. METHODS: In this prospective longitudinal study, 286 mother-preterm infant dyads from a tertiary hospital in Wuhan, China, were followed after discharge. Maternal depressive symptoms were assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale at 2 weeks after discharge and at approximately 4-6 and 7-9 months postpartum. Infant neurodevelopment was assessed using the Age

Mother's breastfeeding success, parenting behavior and newborn perception in the early postpartum period: The effect of possible maternal stress and depression.

This study examined the associations between maternal stress, postpartum depressive symptoms, breastfeeding success, parenting behavior, and maternal perceptions of the newborn in the early postpartum period. A descriptive, correlational design was conducted with 252 mothers recruited from a postpartum ward in Central Anatolia, Türkiye, between May 2024 and May 2025. Postpartum depression was identified in 11.5% (n = 29) of participants. At the nominal level, some variables appeared to be associated with study outcomes. However, after adjusting for multiple comparisons using the Benjamini-Hoch

Effect of premenstrual syndrome on the risk of postpartum depression within one year after childbirth among primiparous women: Evidence from TriNetX.

BACKGROUND: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and postpartum depression (PPD) are hormonally mediated mood disorders occurring at different but physiologically related reproductive stages. Although previous studies suggest an association between PMS and PPD, evidence from cohort study regarding the effect of PMS on new-onset PPD remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between prepregnancy PMS and risk of new-onset PPD within one year after childbirth among primiparous women. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used data from the TriNetX global collaborative network. A total of

Latent Profiles of Traumatic Psychological Responses and Their Association With Postpartum Depression Among High-Risk Pregnant Women: A Latent Profile Analysis.

BACKGROUND: High-risk pregnancy often triggers diverse traumatic-related psychological responses, which can affect postpartum depression outcomes. Identifying these response patterns is key to developing targeted interventions. OBJECTIVE: We sought to classify traumatic psychological response profiles in high-risk pregnant women and examine their associations with postpartum depression. METHODS: We recruited 518 high-risk pregnant women from obstetric departments. Participants completed the Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist-Civilian Version during t

Postpartum depression in relation to chronic diseases and multimorbidity in women's mid-late life: a prospective cohort study of UK Biobank.

BACKGROUND: Maternal short-term outcomes of postpartum depression (PPD) were widely examined, but little is known about its long-term association with multiple chronic diseases (multimorbidity) in women's later life. This study aims to assess the association of PPD with chronic diseases and multimorbidity in women's mid-late life. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included female participants in UK Biobank who attended online follow-up assessment and reported their history of PPD. A total of 36 chronic diseases were assessed and multimorbidity was defined as the co-existence of two or mo

Effect of nursing intervention based on Ratu's model for preventing postpartum blues and depression among primiparous women: A treatment-control design.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum is a period of physiological and psychological adaptations among women. This period may negatively impact the mother's life quality, mother-to-baby relationship, and family dynamics because of some psychological issues (e.g., postpartum blues (PPB) or postpartum depression (PPD)) they are experiencing. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of nursing interventions based on Ratu's model for preventing PPB and PPD among primiparous women. DESIGN: A treatment-control design included 120 primiparous women attending a university hospital's Obstetrics and Gynecology Outpatie

Associations of rumination, behavioral activation, and perceived reward with mothers' postpartum depression during the COVID-19 pandemic: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased social isolation for mothers, and rumination exacerbates postpartum depression in mothers with poor social support. Although behavioral activation can help to decrease their depressive symptoms, the mechanism by which behavioral activation reduces postpartum depression remains unclear. METHODS: We examined the effects of rumination and behavioral activation on depression in postpartum women by examining a model mediated by subjective reward perception. A questionnaire was administered to 475 postpartum women (Age: Mean = 30.74 years, SD

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Postpartum Depression Among Women in Low-Income Developing Rural Areas: A Cross-Sectional Study in China.

Background: Postpartum depression (PPD) significantly affects the welfare of mothers, infants, families, and communities. Mothers in rural areas often face low incomes, poor social security, low education levels, and inadequate medical services. These specific cultural, social, and economic aspects have led to a worsening of PPD in rural areas. However, the current situation of PPD among women in rural areas of China is still insufficiently explored. Aim: This study aims to explore the prevalence and risk factors of PPD among women in low-income developing rural areas of China. Methods: A cros

Initial promise of child-parent psychotherapy in reducing stress and postpartum depression among mothers experiencing homelessness: a feasibility and pilot study.

PURPOSE: Mothers experiencing homelessness undergo significant stressors in addition to parenting stress, yet the rate and treatment of postpartum depression (PPD) within this population has yet to be explored. We assessed the risk for PPD and examined the changes in PDD and parenting stress following engagement in treatment. METHODS: Participants included 182 mothers with infants 7 months of age or younger in a shelter setting. After initial assessment of PPD and parenting stress, families participated in Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP). Post assessment was then conducted after 16 weeks. R

Screening fathers for postpartum depression in a maternal-child health clinic: a program evaluation in a midwest urban academic medical center.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) impacts fathers as well as mothers, and is estimated to affect between 8 and 13% of fathers. Paternal PPD is a risk factor for worsened quality of life, poor physical and mental health, and developmental and relational harms in the father-mother-child triad. There are no current recommendations for PPD screening among fathers. Paternal PPD screening was piloted in an intergenerational postpartum primary care clinic. METHODS: The pilot was carried out in an intergenerational postpartum primary care clinic located at a Midwest urban academic safety net he

Associations of Thyroid Hormones Profile During Normal Pregnancy and Postpartum With Anxiety, Depression, and Obsessive/Compulsive Disorder Scores in Euthyroid Women.

OBJECTIVE: Thyroid dysfunction (overt and subclinical) has been consistently linked to pregnancy adversity and abnormal fetal growth and development. Mood disorders such as anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are frequently diagnosed during pregnancy and at postpartum, and emerging evidence suggests association with impaired offspring neurodevelopment and growth. This study aimed to examine potential associations between thyroid function and mood symptoms during pregnancy and postpartum. DESIGN: This is a prospective study measuring thyroid hormones and assessing mood
