OBJECTIVE: A commercially available medication containing homeopathic ingredients showed first signs of success in atopic dermatitis in dogs. The aim of this case series was to evaluate the effect of the preparation in a larger number of dogs with atopic dermatitis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten atopic dogs received the oral homoeopathic combination preparation daily for 3 weeks according to the manufacturer's specifications. The diagnosis of atopic dermatitis was made previously by medical history, clinical examination and exclusion of differential diagnoses. Skin infections with bacteria and ye

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis management is challenging and usually requires intermittent or continuous, long-term treatment with topical and/or systemic anti-inflammatory agents and appropriate skin care. Most patients affected by atopic dermatitis improve during sun exposure. It has been reported that the change from a subartic/temperate to a subtropical climate for 4 weeks improved significantly skin symptoms and quality of life in children, even for 3 months after return. However, until now the effect of sun exposure on adult patients with atopic dermatitis has never been investigated.

BACKGROUND: Polymorphisms of the filaggrin 2 gene (rs 12568784 and rs 16899374) are associated with persistent atopic dermatitis in African American patients. Filaggrin 2 is a protein with a function similar to filaggrin and also encoded in the epidermal differentiation complex on chromosome 1q21.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the polymorphisms in the filaggrin 2 gene (rs 12568784 and rs 16899374) in children and adults with atopic dermatitis and to verify the association of these with the severity of the clinical picture, presence of other allergic diseases, and socio-demographic factors.

BACKGROUND: The nonlesional skin of children with atopic dermatitis (AD) with peanut allergy (PA) is associated with increased transepidermal water loss; low urocanic acid (UCA) and pyrrolidone carboxylic acid (PCA), both of which are filaggrin breakdown products; and a reduced ratio of esterified ω-hydroxy fatty acid sphingosine ceramides (EOS-CERs) to nonhydroxy fatty acid sphingosine ceramides (NS-CERs) in the skin. The skin barrier of subjects with PA without AD (AD-PA+) has not been studied.
OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to explore whether AD-PA+ is associated with skin barrier abnormalities.

Mechanical scratching, a common external stress affecting the skin, is induced by various causes, such as pruritus. Scratch injury to epidermal keratinocytes upregulates the production and release of chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 20 (CCL20) in vitro, which selectively chemoattracts interleukin (IL)-17A-producing immune cells that express chemokine (C-C motif) receptor 6 (CCR6). In IL-17A-dominant psoriasis, scratch-induced CCL20 upregulation and subsequent accumulation of IL-17A-producing immune cells and CCR6+ mature dendritic cells may trigger the development of psoriatic lesions, a process k

The staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome is a rare dermatological entity that in early stages may be confused with a flare-up of a rush of atopic dermatitis. We present the case of an 8-year-old boy with a history of atopic dermatitis and egg allergy that went to the Emergency Department for erythematous-bullous lesions on the skin. Symptoms began as an erythema in areas of flexures, which associated conjunctivitis and bilateral eyelid erythema. After 24 hours, a generalized erythema appeared with flaccid blisters predominating in flexural areas, accompanied by hyperkeratosis and perioral xero

The cutaneous microbiome has potential for therapeutic intervention in inflammatory-driven skin disease. Research into atopic dermatitis and acne vulgaris has highlighted the importance of the skin microbiota in disease pathogenesis, prognostication, and targets for therapeutic intervention. Current management of these conditions aims to control the inflammatory response thought to be associated with specific pathogens using both topical and systemic antimicrobials. However, commensal microbiota found naturally on the skin have been shown to play an important role in the resolution of disease

Sweating plays an important role in maintaining temperature homeostasis in humans. However, under certain circumstances, sweat can cause itching. For example, when excessive sweat accumulates on the skin surface for a long period, miliaria can develop and cause itching. Subjects with dermatoses, such as atopic dermatitis (AD), suffer from itch when exposed to heat or psychological stresses, which are also known perspiration stimuli. Recently, some mechanisms of sweat-induced itch have been revealed. For instance, attenuated sweating ability is observed in subjects with AD, causing heat retenti

BACKGROUND: Cyclosporine is a useful immunosuppressive agent for achieving disease control in moderate to severe atopic dermatitis in children and adults. However, it carries the potential for nephrotoxicity. Monitoring of drug levels is performed in other patient groups, such as transplant recipients, but is not commonplace in the management of atopic dermatitis.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate levels of nephrotoxicity associated with cyclosporine use in atopic dermatitis and assess potential correlation with trough levels of cyclosporine.
METHODS: An electronic search was conducted on MEDLINE,

Acrodermatitis enteropathica (AcE) is a rare, autosomal recessive inherited disorder caused by mutation of the SLC39A4 gene coding for zinc transport protein (ZIP 4). The disease appears during childhood especially in breastfeeding or post-breastfeeding infant. Eczema herpeticum refers to a disseminated skin infection of herpes simplex virus that usually leads to vesicular eruptions commonly seen on a background of atopic dermatitis (AD). We describe an 11-year-old boy with periorificial erosions in periorbital, perinasal, perioral, perineal, and gluteal areas, accompanied with itchy vesicles,

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic studies report that alopecia areata (AA) is related to various atopic and autoimmune diseases. The purpose of this study was to identify clinical characteristics and the prevalence of comorbid conditions in Israeli patients with AA.
METHODS: This retrospective, matched, case-control study was based on data from an electronic patient record data base. The patients with an electronically documented diagnosis of AA were included in the AA group. The control group was randomly sampled from the remaining subjects, with a case-to-control ratio of two controls for each case

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing, noncontagious skin inflammation characterized by dry skin and itch. Mutation in filaggrin gene leads to defective skin barrier, allowing entry of allergen and eliciting immunological response.
OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to investigate the prevalence of AD in Malaysian children and to understand the pattern of drug therapy. Such information could be useful to establish the relationship between ethnicity and family history of atopy and the development of associated signs and symptoms.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was

BACKGROUND: Although atopic dermatitis (AD) is a very common skin disease, data on the percentage of patients with really difficult-to-treat AD are scarce. From socio-economic perspective, it is important to have more insight into these numbers, as new very effective, but expensive, treatment options will be available in the near future for difficult-to-treat AD. Estimating the number of patients with AD using oral immunosuppressive drugs can give an impression of the percentage of difficult-to-treat patients in the total AD population.
OBJECTIVE: To give an overview of the use of oral immuno

Corticosteroids are potent anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic agents used in the treatment of various inflammatory diseases, including allergic disease. They are frequently considered the therapy-of-choice for many skin diseases. However, allergic reactions caused by corticosteroids have been reported. Among these, delayed reactions to topical steroids are more common, whereas immediate reactions to systemic steroids are rare. Herein, we report the case of a 32-year-old woman with triamcinolone-induced immediate hypersensitivity reaction, in which the patient had a positive prick test result
