The role of high-protein diets in body weight management and health.

Studies examining the health benefits of high-protein diets typical of most affluent and many developing countries are not consistent. Prospective epidemiological studies relating dietary protein to clinical and metabolic endpoints suggest increased weight gain and increased risk of diabetes amongst those with a high protein intake and an increased risk of cancer with high intakes of red meat, but lower blood pressure and possibly a reduced risk of heart disease with higher protein intakes. The potential for high-protein diets to confer greater benefit than other diets has been examined using

[Eating disorders and mass media].

During the last 50 years, eating disorders have developed to a complicated and widespread medical and social issue. The latest research results indicate that eating disorders have a quite complicated and multifactorial etiology. According to the multifactorial etiological model, the impact of mass media can be regarded mainly as a precipitating factor. The literature review showed that mass media have a considerable impact on the development and perpetuation of eating disorders. Mass media contribute to the promotion of the thinness ideal as a way to achieve social approval, recognition and su

Office-based strategies for the management of obesity.

Roughly two thirds of U.S. adults are overweight or obese. Obesity increases the risk of hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, heart disease, pulmonary disease, hepatobiliary disease, cancer, and a number of psychosocial complications. Physicians often feel unprepared to handle this important problem. Practical office-based strategies include: (1) making recommendations for assisted self-management, including guidance on popular diets, (2) advising patients about commercial weight-loss programs, (3) advising patients about and prescribing medications, (4) recommending bariatr

The use of indirect calorimetry in the clinical management of adolescents with nutritional disorders.

Indirect calorimetry is a noninvasive, inexpensive technique used to determine resting energy expenditure. Its use provides the clinician with objective information that can be used to design, implement, and evaluate efficacy of treatment in the nutritional management of adolescents with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, chronic dieting behavior, and obesity. This chapter outlines the theoretical framework, interpretation of data, and clinical applications of indirect calorimetry and presents case examples to underscore its utility in adolescents with eating disorders.

Epidemic of obesity fuels demand among payers for alternatives to bariatric surgery.

Why? Because they're finding that obesity is a significant factor involved with many costly chronic diseases, and financial decision-makers are concluding that bariatric surgery--while successful in many cases--is simply too expensive and too risky to cover for the large numbers of individuals who are morbidly obese. See how one EAP is attempting to meet this challenge by designing a program that incorporates the psychological and medical components of weight management.

Obesity treatment with a progressive clinical tri-therapy combining sibutramine and a supervised diet--exercise intervention.

OBJECTIVE: : Sibutramine favors a negative energy balance and also has the potential to increase heart rate and blood pressure. We investigated if a progressive supervised sibutramine--diet--exercise clinical intervention could increase the body weight loss previously reported while minimizing the potential cardiostimulatory effects of this drug. DESIGN AND SUBJECTS: : The tri-therapy intervention was divided into two phases of 6 weeks each in which sibutramine (10 mg) was taken once daily by eight obese men (body mass index (BMI) between 30 and 40 kg/m(2)). Part A consisted of a dietary foll

Effect of short-term underfeeding on weight of splanchnic organs in ewes.

We assessed the effect of short-term underfeeding on weight and protein mass of splanchnic tissues in adult ewes submitted to a factorial experimental design. In a pre-experimental period, 18 ewes divided into 2 groups of 9 were fed a second cut of natural grassland hay during 4 weeks at 112 or 38% of their energy maintenance requirements. Three ewes of each group were then fed the same hay during 4 weeks at either low (group L), moderate (group M) or high intake (group H), corresponding to 38, 75 or 112% of their energy maintenance requirements, respectively, then slaughtered. Fresh weight an

Three cases of comprehensive dietary therapy and pharmacotherapy of patients with complex obesity-related diseases.

The effect of weight loss with anorectic medications on sleep apnea, non-insulin-dependent diabetes, and steatohepatitis is illustrated in three cases from practice in a clinical nutrition setting. Prevention of obesity, a chronic disorder, is preferable, but when obesity becomes a major obstacle in the care of patients with respiratory, cardiovascular, and metabolic disorders and osteoarthritis, an intense course of weight reduction using anorectic medications under medical and dietetic guidance is essential for patients' survival and reduction of medical cost.

Feelings and fantasy in eating disorders: a factor analysis of the Toronto Alexithymia Scale.

The aim of the study was to examine the factor structure of alexithymia in patients with eating disorders and to compare scores on these factors with a non-eating disordered population. The Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS) was given to patients with restricting anorexia nervosa (AN/R, n = 29), bulimia nervosa (BN, n = 83), anorexia with a subtype bulimia (AN/BN, n = 15), and 79 female students. Factors were extracted using a principal-components factor analysis. Four factors were found--inability to Identify Feelings, Paucity of Fantasy, Noncommunication of Feelings, and Concrete Thinking. Mirror image of environmental deprivation: severe childhood obesity of psychosocial origin.

We report 12 children with severe obesity in very early childhood who had no evidence of organic causes for their obesity and whose families evidenced psychosocial dysfunction comparable to that often seen in growth failure of psychosocial origin. Features seen include family disorganization, separation of mother and child, displacement of child care to others, maternal depression, denial of the growth abnormality, hostility towards health care providers, and inconsistent medical follow-up. In all cases, parental limit setting was impaired. We suggest that this condition should be called "seve

An evaluation and follow-up investigation of a behavioural group treatment programme for obesity.

This paper describes an evaluation and 2-year follow-up of a comprehensive behavioural group obesity programme. The sample was made up of three groups totalling 31 patients who were referred to the Weight Reduction Advice Service at Prince of Wales Hospital, Randwick. Patients were thoroughly screened prior to treatment and completed psychological questionnaires before and after treatment. The programme consisted of weekly, 1.5- to 2-hour sessions of formal treatment. An additional 2 sessions were held fortnightly. Treatment was conducted by a clinical psychologist, two dietitians and a physio

The role of allopurinol in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease: A randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Despite being the leading cause of liver-related mortality, the treatment of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) remains challenging. This study aimed to assess the effects of allopurinol on hepatic enzymes and ultrasonographic grading of MASLD patients, given the important role of uric acid in MASLD pathogenesis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This randomized clinical trial enrolled 104 patients with MASLD to receive either 100 mg allopurinol daily in addition to the hypocaloric diet (n = 51) or the hypocaloric diet alone (n = 53) for 6 months.

Modulation of the Kynurenine Pathway in Obese Mexican Navy Women Following a Structured Weight Loss Program: A Pre-Post-Intervention Study.

Background: Obesity is characterized by chronic low-grade inflammation and metabolic disturbances, including an altered tryptophan (Trp) catabolism through the kynurenine pathway (KP). Since the KP is closely linked to immune activity, energy metabolism, and hepatic function, modulating its flux through lifestyle interventions has gained interest as a potential therapeutic strategy. Objective: This exploratory study aimed to investigate the impact of a structured 12-week weight loss program (WLP) on serum KP metabolites in a sample of Mexican women with obesity. Methods: This study involved a

Does TikTok contribute to eating disorders? A comparison of the TikTok algorithms belonging to individuals with eating disorders versus healthy controls.

TikTok employs sophisticated algorithms to deliver users increasingly personalised content over time. We investigated the potential for these algorithms to exacerbate eating disorder symptoms by analysing 1.03 million TikTok videos delivered to 42 individuals with eating disorders (76 % anorexia nervosa) and 49 healthy controls over one month. Within this video corpus, we identified four video categories relevant to eating disorder psychopathology: appearance-oriented videos, dieting videos, exercise videos, and toxic eating disorder (akin to "pro-anorexia") videos. Multi-level models predicte
