INTRODUCTION: Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus (SCF), a traditional Chinese medicine, has been used in treating virtual injury and strain since ancient times. The Chinese Pharmacopoeia reveals that SCF includes raw (RSCF) and vinegar-processed (VSCF) decoction pieces.

Four time-frequency and time-scale methods are studied for their ability of detecting myoclonic seizures from accelerometric data. Methods that are used are: the short-time Fourier transform (STFT), the Wigner distribution (WD), the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) using a Daubechies wavelet, and a newly introduced model-based matched wavelet transform (MOD). Serum ferritin spectrotypes from patients heterozygous for beta-thalassaemia were determined after agarose isoelectric focusing followed by radio-immunofixation with anti-ferritin antibody. Multivariate analysis demonstrated a specific spectrotype for heterozygous beta-thalassaemia. This spectrotype was shown to be different from those in hereditary spherocytosis and idiopathic haemochromatosis. Statistical discrimination reached 100% of well-classified patients between these pathological conditions.

Forty-one cases of typical melanocytic skin lesions (15 intradermal nevi, 14 Spitz nevi and 12 malignant melanomas) were used to investigate the value of staining of nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) in the differential diagnosis of such pigmented lesions. Histologic sections were stained by the silver colloid (Ag) method, with and without the prior use of a melanin blocking agent. There were statistically significant differences in the mean numbers of AgNORs per nucleus between the groups of lesions studied (1.658 for intradermal nevi, 3.0042 for Spitz nevi and 6.669 for malignant melanomas)

The authors used a questionnaire to assess gender differences in barriers to condom use among 198 female and 89 male heterosexual undergraduate college students. Participants were divided into three groups--consistent users, inconsistent users, and nonusers--based on their reported condom use. Factor analyses on each gender revealed similar barrier factor structures, but the barriers explained more of the variance in condom use among women than among men.
