Evaluating Motor Control Improves Discrimination of Adolescents with and without Sports Related Concussion.

Disrupted motor performance is increasingly recognized as a critical sequela of concussion which may have relevance for diagnosis and treatment. In 17 adolescents with recent concussion and 20 never-concussed controls, we evaluated the discriminant ability of a commonly used neurocognitive measure compared to a motor subtle sign exam, which evaluates gait, balance, and fine and gross motor control. We found that the motor subtle sign exam had better discriminant ability than the neurocognitive measure, but combining both measures was superior to analyses with individual measures (Wilks' ƛ = .2

Long-Term Training-Induced Gains of an Auditory Skill in School-Age Children As Compared With Adults.

The few studies that compared auditory skill learning between children and adults found variable results, with only some children reaching adult-like thresholds following training. The present study aimed to assess auditory skill learning in children as compared with adults during single- and multisession training. It was of interest to ascertain whether children who do not reach adult-like performance following a single training session simply require additional training, or whether different mechanisms underlying skill learning need to reach maturity in order to become adult-like performers.

Learning to tie the knot: The acquisition of functional object representations by physical and observational experience.

Here we examined neural substrates for physically and observationally learning to construct novel objects, and characterized brain regions associated with each kind of learning using fMRI. Each participant was assigned a training partner, and for five consecutive days practiced tying one group of knots ("tied" condition) or watched their partner tie different knots ("watched" condition) while a third set of knots remained untrained. Functional MRI was obtained prior to and immediately following the week of training while participants performed a visual knot-matching task. After training, a por

The role of transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 in unimodal and multimodal object recognition task in rats.

BACKGROUND: The role of transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) channels in learning and memory processes has recently been recognized. In the present study, the role of this receptor in the multisensory integration process was investigated. METHODS: This study was done using 96 male Wistar rats, which were kept in a reverse 12-12h dark/light cycle. Unimodal and multimodal object recognition task was performed by four variations of the spontaneous object recognition (SOR) test including standard SOR, tactile SOR, visual SOR, and cross-modal visual-tactile SOR (CMOR). Immuno-modulator inter-alpha inhibitor proteins ameliorate complex auditory processing deficits in rats with neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain injury.

Hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury is recognized as a significant problem in the perinatal period, contributing to life-long language-learning and other cognitive impairments. Central auditory processing deficits are common in infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and have been shown to predict language learning deficits in other at risk infant populations. Inter-alpha inhibitor proteins (IAIPs) are a family of structurally related plasma proteins that modulate the systemic inflammatory response to infection and have been shown to attenuate cell death and improve learning outcomes after

Neuronal pattern separation of motion-relevant input in LIP activity.

In various regions of the brain, neurons discriminate sensory stimuli by decreasing the similarity between ambiguous input patterns. Here, we examine whether this process of pattern separation may drive the rapid discrimination of visual motion stimuli in the lateral intraparietal area (LIP). Starting with a simple mean-rate population model that captures neuronal activity in LIP, we show that overlapping input patterns can be reformatted dynamically to give rise to separated patterns of neuronal activity. The population model predicts that a key ingredient of pattern separation is the presenc

Behavioral and neural correlates of visual emotion discrimination and empathy in mild cognitive impairment.

Emotional and social cognitive deficits were investigated in a group of 24 individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and 24 healthy controls. Empathic and visual emotional responses were collected, analyzed and correlated to brain structural imaging data by means of: (i) a pictorial matching-to-sample task with facial and non-facial stimuli; (ii) self-reported questionnaires for cognitive and affective emotional components, and alexithymia; (iii) in-depth assessment of cognitive functions. Results indicated that visual processing of faces in MCI individuals did not benefit from fearful

Facial discrimination in body dysmorphic, obsessive-compulsive and social anxiety disorders.

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is characterized by preoccupation with perceived flaws in one's own appearance. Several risk factors such as aesthetic perceptual sensitivity have been proposed to explain BDD's unique symptomatology. Although research on facial discrimination is limited so far, the few existing studies have produced mixed results. Thus, the purpose of this study was to further examine facial discrimination in BDD. We administered a facial discrimination paradigm, which allows to assess the ability to identify slight to strong facial changes (e.g., hair loss, acne) when presented

Infants' emerging sensitivity to emotional body expressions: insights from asymmetrical frontal brain activity.

Sensitive responding to others' emotional body expressions is an essential social skill in humans. Using event-related brain potentials, it has recently been shown that the ability to discriminate between emotional body expressions develops between 4 and 8 months of age. However, it is not clear whether the perception of emotional body expressions in others evokes sensitive brain responses linked to motivational processes in infants. We therefore examined frontal EEG alpha asymmetry in response to dynamic happy and fearful body expressions presented to 4- and 8-month-old infants in 2 orientati

Stress and alcohol: epidemiologic evidence.

Exposure to stress often is psychologically distressing. The impact of stress on alcohol use and the risk of alcohol use disorders (AUDs) depends on the type, timing during the life course, duration, and severity of the stress experienced. Four important categories of stressors that can influence alcohol consumption are general life stress, catastrophic/fateful stress, childhood maltreatment, and minority stress. General life stressors, including divorce and job loss, increase the risk for AUDs. Exposure to terrorism or other disasters causes population-level increases in overall alcohol consu

Neural evidence of allophonic perception in children at risk for dyslexia.

Learning to read is a complex process that develops normally in the majority of children and requires the mapping of graphemes to their corresponding phonemes. Problems with the mapping process nevertheless occur in about 5% of the population and are typically attributed to poor phonological representations, which are--in turn--attributed to underlying speech processing difficulties. We examined auditory discrimination of speech sounds in 6-year-old beginning readers with a familial risk of dyslexia (n=31) and no such risk (n=30) using the mismatch negativity (MMN). MMNs were recorded for stim

The role of fear and expectancies in capture of covert attention by spiders.

Fear-related stimuli are often prioritized during visual selection but it remains unclear whether capture by salient objects is more likely to occur when individuals fear those objects. In this study, participants with high and low fear of spiders searched for a circle while on some trials a completely irrelevant fear-related (spider) or neutral distractor (butterfly/leaf) was presented simultaneously in the display. Our results show that when you fear spiders and you are not sure whether a spider is going to be present, then any salient distractor (i.e., a butterfly) grabs your attention, sug

Carbon chain length and the stimulus problem in olfaction.

Understanding how odour quality perception is encoded in its molecular properties arguably poses one of the most significant problems in olfaction. Determining the odour structure-quality relationships of structurally similar odorants could provide a key tool to this problem. We tentatively explored whether a mixture of two molecules, differing only in carbon chain length (C), would yield the same percept as a single odorant with an intermediate carbon chain length, akin to colour vision, or be perceived as a different quality. Ability to discriminate between pairs of iso-intense solutions of

Processing nouns and verbs in the left frontal cortex: a transcranial magnetic stimulation study.

Neuropsychological and neurophysiological studies suggest that the production of verbs in speech depends on cortical regions in the left frontal lobe. However, the precise topography of these regions, and their functional roles in verb production, remains matters of debate. In an earlier study with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), we showed that stimulation to the left anterior midfrontal gyrus disrupted verb production, but not noun production, in a task that required subjects to perform simple morphological alternations. This result raises a number of questions: for examp

A unified probabilistic model of the perception of three-dimensional structure from optic flow.

Human observers can perceive the three- dimensional (3-D) structure of their environment using various cues, an important one of which is optic flow. The motion of any point's projection on the retina depends both on the point's movement in space and on its distance from the eye. Therefore, retinal motion can be used to extract the 3-D structure of the environment and the shape of objects, in a process known as structure-from-motion (SFM). However, because many combinations of 3-D structure and motion can lead to the same optic flow, SFM is an ill-posed inverse problem. The rigidity hypothesis

A preclinical comparison between different opioids: antinociceptive versus adverse effects.

Reduced side-effect liability of opioids may enhance the patient's quality of life and decrease the incidence of opioid-insensitive pain. Literature offers few comparative data between different opioids at equianalgesic doses. Therefore morphine, fentanyl, buprenorphine, codeine, hydrocodone and oxycodone were compared for analgesic properties and side-effect profiles in rats. Analgesic efficacy was analysed using a tail withdrawal test for acute thermal nociception, a formalin test for chemically induced inflammatory pain and a von Frey test for mechanical hypersensitivity. For side-effect pr

Immediate post-saccadic information mediates space constancy.

We recently demonstrated that the perceived stability of a visual target that is displaced during a saccade critically depends on whether the target is present immediately when the saccade ends; blanking a target during and just after a saccade makes its intra-saccadic displacement more visible (Deubel et al. Vis Res 1996;36:985-996). Here, we investigate the interaction of visual context and blanking. Subjects saw a saccade target and an equal-sized distractor. During a saccade one or the other was displaced left or right. At the same time, one of the objects could be blanked briefly. Subject
