Repairing defects of the auricle requires an appreciation of the underlying 3-dimensional framework, the flexible properties of the cartilages, and the healing contractile tendencies of the surrounding soft tissue. In the analysis of auricular defects and planning of their reconstruction, it is helpful to divide the auricle into subunits for which different techniques may offer better functional and aesthetic outcomes. This article reviews many of the reconstructive options for defects of the various auricular subunits.

BACKGROUND: The authors have been using the Nagata technique since 2002. In this review of 100 consecutive ear reconstructions, the authors present technique modifications that have evolved over this period that have contributed to improved auricular contour and that now allow for auricular reconstruction in a single stage.
METHODS: This study is a retrospective review of a prospectively acquired database. The series is restricted to primary reconstructions performed for congenital microtia. Photographs of 10 consecutive patients are presented to demonstrate the results of the technique. Surg

UNLABELLED: When performing auriculoplasty for microtia surgery, wires are typically used to fix the costal cartilage frames. However, cases in which such wires become exposed during a long-term follow-up were frequently observed at our facility. Hence, using various materials, we conducted an investigation of the materials most suitable for fixation.
METHOD: The subjects consisted of 122 cases in which auriculoplasty by costal cartilage graft surgery was performed and the postoperative course was traceable, within approximately 24 years from January 1984 to March 2007. Regarding the fixation

Between 1973 and 1977 135 otoplasties were performed following the technique described by Mustardé in 1963. The follow up covered 105 of the cases (77,7%). The quality of the results and the validity of subjective and objective criteria for evaluation were evaluated statistically and compared with previous data. Three aesthetic groups were described by statistical methods. Shape and position of the corrected auricle were classified as good (53%), improved (35%), almost unchanged (12%), partial relapses 8 (7,5%), total relapses 6 (5,7%). In no case was a deteriostation observed. The head-pinna

Atypical incudomalleal and incudostapedial joint changes were found in a 55-year-old woman with long-standing rheumatoid arthritis and sicca syndrome (Sjögren syndrome). Available audiograms taken at 37 and 42 years of age demonstrated slight bilateral high-frequency loss of hearing. The ossicular joint changes involved dissolution of disk material together with proliferation of synovial-type elements of the disk and articular surfaces, with formation of pannus-like tissue. There was extensive destruction of cartilage, with cellular collagenous tissue extending along the exposed bone surfaces.

The main causes of acquired auricular defects are surgical treatment of skin tumors and trauma. Due to the complex anatomy of the external ear, surgical reconstruction of defects in this area is challenging for surgeons, especially in case of midhelix-antihelix involvement with significant loss of soft tissue and cartilage. Our purpose is to illustrate the main reconstructive techniques of large midhelix and antihelix defects, as well as the advantages or disadvantages associated with each surgical procedure. Primary closure/wedge technique is mainly used in elderly, multimorbid subjects where

[3H]Dihydrostreptomycin was given intramuscularly to young pigmented guinea pigs and rats. Whole-body autoradiography, combined with densitometric measurement of the blackening of the autoradiograms, and liquid scintillation counting were used to determine the levels of radioactivity in the inner ear in relation to blood and other tissues. It was found that there was an accumulation of radioactivity in the perilymph of both the cochlear and vestibular parts of the labyrinth. The labelling of the endolymph was weak. The levels of radioactivity in the membranous linings of the labyrinth includin

BACKGROUND: Auricular hematoma is a condition commonly seen in the emergency department among patients presenting with trauma to the ear. It may result in several complications such as perichondritis and cauliflower ear if not managed appropriately.
OBJECTIVE: This narrative review provides an evidence-based summary of the evaluation and management of auricular hematoma.
DISCUSSION: Auricular hematoma is most commonly associated with shearing or blunt trauma to the ear, resulting in formation of a hematoma within the subperichondrial space. This hematoma obstructs the nutrient supply from th

BACKGROUND: Over the past few years, conchal cartilage has been most often used in rhinoplasty. The donor site complications following conchal cartilage graft harvesting are scar formation, hematoma formation, and delayed wound healing, although hematoma is one of the most important and common complications. A complete conchal defect as a complication of auricular cartilage graft harvesting has not been previously reported in the literature. The authors report an unusual case of an iatrogenic conchal defect resulting from conchal cartilage graft harvesting that was treated using a posterior au

Prominent ear is the most common deformity of the external ear. The major causes can be an underdeveloped antithetical fold, concha hypertrophy, and prominence of the ear lobule. Since Ely's first aesthetic correction of the prominent ear in 1881, more than 200 different techniques have been described, but the choice of procedure still remains the surgeon's preference. This report presents the laterally based posterior auricular dermal flap technique as an adjunct to the conventional cartilage-sparing otoplasty. An elliptical skin incision was planned according to the classic prominent ear cor

OBJECTIVE: To introduce a Mayo Clinic pilot study in which newborn hearing screeners are trained to identify congenital auricular deformities, allowing for non-surgical correction with a simple splint initiated in the immediate neonatal period.
METHODS: Newborn hearing screeners received education on evaluation of congenital auricular deformities. Ten infants with 19 affected ears amenable to treatment with a simple splint were enrolled between June 15 and December 10, 2009. Splinting was initiated prior to the infant's discharge from the hospital.
RESULTS: Congenital auricular deformities a

BACKGROUND: The cauliflower ear or wrestler's ear deformity results from an untreated auricular hematoma. This is due to neocartilage deposition and fibrosis secondary to perichondritis caused by the hematoma leading to the characteristic cauliflower ear appearance. Though some treatment options have been studied, the results have been inconsistent. This review aims to provide a systematic evaluation of available therapeutic strategies for the prevention and treatment of cauliflower ear.
METHODS: We performed a search in the Medline and Scopus databases for all articles published until May 20

Bone-conduction (BC) has been applied to hearing aids for the conductive hearing loss, however, also has some disadvantage especially in wearability of a sound transducer. Therefore, as a solution, "cartilage conduction (CC)" has been proposed and applied to devices such as a hearing aid and smartphones. In CC, a sound transducer is placed on the cartilage of the pinna, and the air-conduction (AC) and osseotympanic BC components are dominantly transmitted. However, even in CC, the vibrating surface often contacts not only with the aural cartilage but also with the osseous parts of/around the p

INTRODUCTION: The temporoparietal fascia flaps (TPFF) have been widely used to cover the framework in auricular reconstructions. However, flap harvesting is mostly done by open surgery which may be easier but often results in bad scarring and hair loss. We would like to present a series of cases using endoscopic-assisted flap harvesting techniques with only one single cosmetic auricular incision.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Prospective studies from June 2018 to September 2021 on patients who underwent single-stage total auricular reconstruction using autologous costal cartilage and porous polyethyl

BACKGROUND: Auricular reconstruction in patients with congenital microtia permits craniofacial balance and harmony, especially in patients with bilateral microtia. However, published techniques usually require skin grafting, which can lead to color mismatch and visible scarring. Some surgeons prefer to reconstruct the auricle of each side separately, which prolongs the complete cycle of surgery and increases suffering of the patient. In this study, we introduce a modified technique using single expanded flaps without skin grafting to achieve simultaneous bilateral auricular reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: As the antihelix is created in the operation for prominent ear, the helix often presents irregularities. This biomechanical study aims to elucidate effective techniques to prevent these irregularities.
METHODS: Finite element models were produced simulating 10 prominent ears. The scaphas of the 10 models were thinned to simulate scoring or abrasion of the cartilage. The thinning was conducted in four fashions. In the first group, no thinning was conducted (Non-Scoring Models); in the second group, the upper half of the scapha was thinned (Upper-Scoring Models); in the third group,

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The inlay "butterfly" cartilage tympanoplasty was first described as a treatment for small, central ear drum perforations. This technique can also be applied in large, marginal perforations, whereas the cartilage graft is anchored on the bony annulus. The aim of this study was to present the technique, to evaluate the results of butterfly tympanoplasty in marginal perforations, and to compare with the results of butterfly tympanoplasty in patients with nonmarginal perforations.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series.
METHODS: The files of patients who underwent inlay
