Orphan Drugs and Diseases: A Systematic Review.

Rare diseases, though individually infrequent, collectively affect over 300 million people worldwide. The development of orphan drugs to treat these conditions is hampered by regulatory inconsistencies, high costs, and limited clinical trial populations. To systematically review the current landscape of orphan drugs and rare diseases, focusing on definitions, therapeutic approaches, health economic evaluations, and stakeholder perspectives. A systematic review was conducted using 70 reference-screened articles, out of which 10 were selected based on relevance to rare diseases or orphan drug po

Experiences around testing and linkage to HIV care among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men: qualitative findings from the patient-centered care project in the lake Victoria region of Kenya.

Although the Kenyan Ministry of Health recognizes key populations in addressing the country's HIV epidemic, gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) face challenges in HIV testing, linkage, and retention in care. This study aimed to inform the development of context-specific interventions to improve GBMSM's initiation in HIV care in Kenya. Drawing on in-depth semi-structured interview data from the Patient-Centered Care Project (PCCP), a qualitative study exploring the experiences of people with HIV (PWH) across the continuum of care, we focused on GBMSM aged ≥18 years with H

Decoupling and decomposition analysis of industrial sulfur dioxide emissions from the industrial economy in 30 Chinese provinces.

As one of the largest emitters of sulfur dioxide (SO2), China has faced increasing pressure to achieve sustainable development. This study investigates the decoupling relationship between industrial SO2 emissions and the industrial economy in China during 1996-2015. According to the decoupling results, the study period is divided into four stages: 1996-2001, 2001-2006, 2006-2010, and 2010-2015. These four stages are closely aligned with the major adjustments of the national socio-economic policies. Then, the logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) decomposition method is used to analyze the driv

The economics of animal welfare.

This paper examines four examples of animal welfare issues, demonstrating the interactions between welfare and economic principles. Welfare issues associated with purebred companion animals are examined in terms of predicted inherited diseases, highlighting the power of supply and demand in perpetuating traits in pets that compromise their well-being. The livestock industry is presented from the point of view of pig production and the impact that a major disease (pleurisy) has on production and the animals' welfare. The authors investigate the conflicting and complementary demands of animal we

Socio-economic inequalities in malaria prevalence among under-five children in Ghana between 2016 and 2019: a decomposition analysis.

BACKGROUND: In a country with limited and unequally distributed resources, and plagued with malaria annually, under-five children are severely affected by this disease in Ghana. While the epidemiological burden of malaria on under-five children is well-documented, the extent and contributors of socio-economic inequalities in malaria prevalence remain under-explored. This study examined the intertemporal socioeconomic status (SES)-related inequalities in malaria prevalence among under-five children in Ghana from 2016 to 2019 and identified the key factors contributing to these disparities. Effects of COVID-19 economic impacts on alcohol use disorder symptoms are mediated by maximum and volume of alcohol intake: Data from the National Alcohol Survey's COVID Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Drinking patterns underlying the effects of COVID-19 economic impacts on alcohol use disorder (AUD) severity are poorly understood, yet critical for alcohol messaging during global crises. We examined whether the effects of COVID-19 economic impacts (CEIs) on AUD severity were mediated by drinking volume and/or maximum drinks. METHODS: Data are from the National Alcohol Survey's COVID Cohort, collected prepandemic in 2019-early 2020 (Wave 1), 2021 (Wave 2), and 2022 (Wave 3) using probability sampling via an online survey (n = 1062 across all waves). A comprehensive review of donkey (Equus asinus) industry development in Pakistan with current and future prospects.

The donkey (Equus asinus) plays a pivotal role in the daily life of farmers and underpins the rural and peri‑urban economy of Pakistan. Pakistan is the world's third-largest donkey-rearing country, with an estimated population of 5.4-6.0 million head. Despite their economic significance, donkeys have been neglected in research, care, welfare, and policy formulation, creating a significant knowledge gap in donkey industry development in Pakistan. This review synthesizes national livestock data (1976- 2025), equid population comparisons, geographic distribution, and field-based reports. Accordin

Study on provincial carbon emission inequality in China from 1995 to 2019 based on the improved Gini index.

The Chinese government has set ambitious carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals for 2030 and 2060. To achieve these targets, China will need to adopt stricter carbon emission policies in the future. Due to China's vast territory, there are significant disparities in economic development levels and carbon dioxide emissions (CEs) among its provinces. Therefore, equitable carbon reduction policies are crucial for regional economic development. This study calculates CEs from energy consumption in 30 Chinese provinces using energy balance tables and CEs factors. Based on this, the Dagum decomposit…

The political process and its relationship to the psychotherapy of substance misusers: an historical perspective.

There are massive changes underway in the allocation of funds for health care in the United States which will impact upon services provided for users and misusers of intoxicating substances. Recent findings suggest that conditions in the marketplace and the development of professions have effected standards of care rather than a reasoned analysis of need and outcome. Psychologists question to what extent they will be involved in public policy issues including what is clinically and socially relevant. The goal of this paper was to determine if an historical perspective upon federal regulation o

A Public Health Response to Economic Warfare.

President Trump's 2025 implementation of tariffs has been described as a form of economic warfare. The public health community has long viewed conventional forms of warfare as a determinant of health and developed appropriate responses. In this editorial, we argue that this community must now respond in a similar way to all forms of economic warfare. We describe the ways in which economic warfare is waged, which include tariffs, trade sanctions, currency manipulation, and cyberattacks, and the health consequences that arise from them. Drawing on historical examples like the Opium Wars, we high

Estimating Past, Present, and Future Trends in the Global Distribution and Abundance of the Arbovirus Vector Aedes aegypti Under Climate Change Scenarios.

Background: Aedes aegypti is the principal vector for several important arbovirus diseases, including dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika. While recent empirical research has attempted to identify the current global distribution of the vector, the seasonal, and longer-term dynamics of the mosquito in response to trends in climate, population, and economic development over the twentieth and the twenty-first century remains to be elucidated. Methods: In this study, we use a process-based mathematical model to estimate global vector distribution and abundance. The model is based on the li…

Environmental pollution: An enormous and invisible burden on health systems in low- and middle-income counties.

Background. Environmental pollution has become the leading risk factor for death in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The World Health Organization and others calculate that exposures to polluted air - indoor and outdoor, water and soil resulted in 8.4 million deaths in LMICs in 2012. By comparison, HIV/AIDS causes 1.5 million deaths per year, and malaria and tuberculosis Less than 1 million each. The diseases caused by pollution include the traditional scourges of pneumonia and diarrhea, but increasingly they also include chronic, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as such as heart
