OBJECTIVE: The global economic crisis and the subsequent austerity measures taken in Greece in 2010 have moved the country to the epicenter of a financial storm with negative effects on the national health sector and all aspects of social life.
METHODS: Records of patients admitted for treatment of maxillofacial fractures in two different periods of time were used in this study. Data concerning the etiology of fractures from 2006 to 2009 were compared with data from 2010 to 2013 to investigate whether the economic recession has significantly influenced the causality of trauma.

Melioidosis is among the most common causes of septicemia in Thailand, but data on economic burden are limited. We describe the economic impact of bacteremic melioidosis hospitalizations in two Thailand provinces during 2006-2008. Costs are presented in US dollars ($1 = 30.49 Thai Baht). Varicella-zoster virus causes chickenpox (CP) and after reactivation herpes zoster (HZ). Vaccines are available against both diseases warranting an assessment of the pre-vaccination burden of disease. The objective of this work was to estimate from the clinical, economic, and social standpoints the efficacy of medical aid provided to the patients with chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) and concomitant pathology of the nasal cavity by means of the one-step surgical intervention. The study included a total of 208 patients presenting with CSOM of whom 108 ones were treated by the traditional multistage method and the remaining 108 by simultaneous rhinootosurgery. The latter approach was shown to be much more efficacious in terms of clinical, economic, and social considerations.
