Low levels of chicken body louse (Menacanthus stramineus) infestations affect chicken welfare in a cage-free housing system.

BACKGROUND: The chicken body louse is an obligate ectoparasite of domestic chickens. Chicken body lice feed on feathers, and infestation with this louse is linked to decreases in egg production, hen weight, and feed conversion efficiency. However, it is unknown how chicken body lice impact egg-laying chickens in cage-free environments. Welfare and behavior metrics were collected from flocks of egg-laying chickens either infested with chicken body lice or left uninfested. METHODS: In two trials, two flocks of cage-free commercial egg-laying chickens were infested with chicken body lice or main

A qualitative study on how intimate partner violence against women changes, escalates, and persists from pre- to postseparation.

Research has focused on intimate partner violence (IPV) against women either before or after separation, but little attention has been paid to the changes in and persistence of violent behaviors from one situation to the next. This study contributes to the literature by comparing the changes in types and frequencies of abusive behaviors of women's former husbands. This allows us to understand how mechanisms of power are enacted through IPV both before and after separation. We interviewed 19 women in the Midwestern United States who had experienced IPV by their former husbands and had subsequen

Society of Behavioral Medicine (SBM) Position Statement: increase access to mental health services due to COVID-19-related parent and family stress.

COVID-19 has caused drastic increases in family stress contributing to deleterious social and emotional ramifications. Before COVID-19, millions of Americans lacked access to mental health resources, and now in the midst of a global pandemic, resources are more limited in times of greater need. In March 2020, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act provided funding for mental health reforms; yet many barriers remained to receiving sufficient care. In February 2021, the Society of Behavioral Medicine recommended federal legislators expand Community Behavioral Healthcare C

[Experimental rodent models of chronic prostatitis: effect of phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitor on chronic pelvic-pain-related behavior].

Chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) is commonly diagnosed in men younger than 50 years old. It is characterized by pelvic pain, voiding symptoms and sexual dysfunction. The considerable discomfort or pain experienced has a negative impact on the quality of life of patients and is a huge economic burden because of the high recurrence rate and the low cure rate. Appropriate animal models are essential for the development of new drugs for the treatment of CP/CPPS, and several rodent models induced by different methods and over different time frames have been established.

May the passion be with you: The addictive potential of collectible card games, miniatures, and dice of the Star Wars universe.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In recent years, we have witnessed a growing research interest in behavioral addictions and in pleasurable behaviors that generate a certain discomfort in the people who engage in them. The objective of this study was to assess if users of collectible card games, miniatures, and dice from the Star Wars Universe Games (SWUG) may also present criteria of addiction and if the presence of these criteria is related to demographic variables, game-playing habits, and other variables. METHODS: SWUG players were contacted through specialized gaming chats, and 218 of them completed

High and low neurobehavior disinhibition clusters within locales: implications for community efforts to prevent substance use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of where substance use and other such behavioral problems frequently occur has aided policing, public health, and urban planning strategies to reduce such behaviors. Identifying locales characterized by high childhood neurobehavioral disinhibition (ND), a strong predictor of substance use and consequent disorder (SUD), may likewise improve prevention efforts. OBJECTIVES: The distribution of ND in 10-12-year olds was mapped to metropolitan Pittsburgh, PA, and tested for clustering within locales. METHODS: The 738 participating families represented the population in terms

Assessing distinguishable social skills in medical admission: does construct-driven development solve validity issues of situational judgment tests?

BACKGROUND: Social skills are important for future physicians and are therefore increasingly considered in selection processes. One economic assessment method from which different social skills can be inferred are Situational Judgment Tests (SJTs) in which applicants are asked to rate behavioral responses in context-relevant situations. However, traditional SJTs have so far failed to distinctively measure specified constructs. To address this shortcoming in the medical admission context, we applied a construct-driven approach of SJT development in which test development was deductively guided

Sexual risk reduction needs of adolescents living with HIV in a clinical care setting.

As anti-retroviral therapy becomes increasingly available, young people living with HIV need tailored support to adopt healthy sexual behaviors. There has been a gap in the availability of culturally appropriate techniques for secondary prevention and sexual risk reduction in this target group. This formative study assessed sexual and reproductive health needs and problems, as well as determinants of sexual risk-taking among young people living with HIV aged 11-21 years attending the Paediatric Infectious Disease Clinic in Kampala, Uganda. Theoretical guidance was provided by the Information-M

Behavior and Chemical Ecology in Phoridae (Diptera): A Systematic Review of Parasitoid-Host Interactions.

Phorid flies are a highly diverse group that exhibits multiple parasitic strategies involving ants, bees, and other invertebrates. Although comprehensive reviews are limited, most studies emphasize parasitoid-host interactions, especially within Apocephalus, known as "decapitating flies" because their larvae develop inside ant heads. Some species, such as Pseudohypocera kerteszi (Enderlein, 1912), are economically important due to their negative effects on stingless bee colonies. Chemical ecology plays an important role in understanding these interactions, as compounds like cuticular hydrocarb

Social Determinants of Health and Psychological Capital Among Youth Experiencing Homelessness.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health affect health behaviors and outcomes. Youth experiencing homelessness suffer significant deprivation of resources such as inadequate housing, reduced education, poor health care, and decreased economic stability. Inner resources, such as psychological capital, may also be related to health behaviors and health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we sought to describe and explore associations among selected determinants of health and self-reported scores on indicators of psychological capital among youth experiencing homelessness. METHODS: This cross-

Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) Adherence and Prenatal Alcohol Use among Women Who Are Pregnant with HIV in South Africa.

This brief report emphasizes the need to focus on women with HIV who are pregnant who use alcohol or other drugs. A recently completed implementation science study tested a gender-focused behavioral intervention, the Women's Health CoOp (WHC), to improve antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence and reduce alcohol use among women with HIV. The study identified 33 participants who had a positive pregnancy test result at the baseline assessment, of whom five participants remained pregnant during the 6-month duration of the study. Of the 33 pregnant participants at the baseline assessment, 55% repor

Incarceration and high-risk sex partnerships among men in the United States.

Incarceration is associated with multiple and concurrent partnerships, which are determinants of sexually transmitted infections (STI), including HIV. The associations between incarceration and high-risk sex partnerships may exist, in part, because incarceration disrupts stable sex partnerships, some of which are protective against high-risk sex partnerships. When investigating STI/HIV risk among those with incarceration histories, it is important to consider the potential role of drug use as a factor contributing to sexual risk behavior. First, incarceration's influence on sexual risk taking

Voting intentions during the later stage of the COVID-19 pandemic: The roles of risk perception and performance evaluations in South Korea.

In this study, we examine voting intentions during the later stage of the COVID-19 pandemic in relation to risk perceptions and performance evaluations. Although prior research has documented rally-around-the-flag effects during the early phase of the pandemic, less is known about how vote choice is structured once acute crisis conditions have waned. This study draws on a nationally representative survey conducted in South Korea around the March 2022 presidential election. The analysis examines associations between affective and cognitive risk perceptions, evaluations of the government's COVID

Online grocery purchasing in Mississippi: associations with broadband, rurality, and household characteristics.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigates the sociodemographic, economic, and area characteristics associated with Online Grocery Purchasing (OGP) use among adult residents of Mississippi. Understanding these factors is important in a largely rural and low-income state to address barriers and enhance accessibility. METHODS: Data were collected from a 2022 online pilot survey (n = 398) and secondary sources. A logistic regression model was used to analyze associations between self-reported OGP use and factors including local broadband quality, sociodemographic and economic characteristics, the loc

Covid-19 vs. Ebola: Impact on households and small businesses in North Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo.

In April 2020, the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo was facing two major infectious disease outbreaks: Covid-19 and Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). We highlight large differences in the socioeconomic impact of these two outbreaks. The data come from a phone survey that we conducted in the period May-July 2020 with 637 households and 363 small firms from a megacity and two rural communes in the province of North Kivu. While 3,470 EVD cases and 2,287 EVD deaths were confirmed since August 2018, self-reported impacts of EVD on revenues, access to food and behavior were limited. In contrast, only 2
