Bony injuries about the elbow in the throwing athlete.

Tremendous valgus stress during the acceleration phase of pitching is the primary cause of elbow injury in the pitcher. Lateral compression injuries are usually found in pitchers in their early teens, and osteochondritis dissecans is the primary underlying cause. Severe flexion contractures and even partial ankylosis of the elbow may occur. Prognosis after surgery is generally poor. Medial tension injuries with either soft-tissue damage or bony damage usually require surgery. The medial collateral ligament should be considered the primary stabilizer against the valgus-vector overload. The medi…

Entrapment of the median nerve after dislocation of the elbow.

An unusual case of posterior dislocation of the elbow, complicated by entrapment of the median nerve, is reported. Entrapment occurred in the reduction of an associated medial humeral epicondyle fracture. Because the nerve was not in the joint, differentiating the entrapment from a nerve traction injury was difficult. Careful diagnosis and delayed specific surgery can secure an excellent outcome.

Articular and ligamentous contributions to the stability of the elbow joint.

This preliminary study of four elbow specimens investigates the relationship of articular geometry and ligamentous structures in providing stability to the elbow joint. A technique is presented that describes the constraining features of varus-valgus and distraction in extension and at 90 degree of elbow flexion. Valgus stability is equally divided among the medial collateral ligament, anterior capsule, and bony articulation in full extension; whereas, at 90 degrees of flexion the contribution of the anterior capsule is assumed by the medial collateral ligament which provides approximately 55%…

Ultrastructure of the common extensor tendon in tennis elbow.

In patients with tennis elbow, the common extensor tendon showed a pronounced reactive change consisting of mesenchymal cell proliferation along with aggregates of newly formed vascular channels. When studied ultrastructurally, many of the mesenchymal cells adjacent to the vascular channels were surrounded by a basal lamina, which is not normally seen around tenocytes. The cytoplasm of these cells showed features of both endothelial cells and tenocytes. It thus appeared, that the endothelial cells of the newly formed vascular channels were the source of proliferating mesenchymal cells differen…

The readability of total elbow arthroplasty educational materials.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the readability of patient education materials related to total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) and to compare readability across clinical practice and general health information websites. METHODS: A Google search using the term "Total Elbow Arthroplasty patient information" was performed in September 2025. The first 25 websites containing written patient educational materials on TEA were included, excluding websites with only graphics, videos, or tables. Websites were categorized as clinical practice or general health information sources. Non-ed…

Cohort of 101 consecutive Nexel total elbow arthroplasties.

BACKGROUND: The Nexel total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) was introduced as an enhancement of the Coonrad-Morrey TEA, which through design modifications aimed to improve patient outcomes. However, high revision rates due to loosening have been reported for this implant. METHODS: A review of 101 consecutive primary Nexel TEAs performed between 2015 and 2021 at a single institution was conducted using data from the Norwegian Arthroplasty Register, electronic medical records, and radiographic evaluations. Implant revision, other secondary surgery, and complications were investigated. Serial radiograp…

Elbow Traumatic and Overuse Injuries: A Radiologic Review.

Elbow injuries resulting from acute trauma or repetitive overuse are a common source of pain and functional limitation in both athletes and the general population. This review presents a radiologic approach to the evaluation and management of these conditions. It describes the roles of key imaging modalities and provides practical guidance for assessing traumatic injuries such as fractures, ligamentous disruptions, and tendon avulsions. Common overuse conditions, such as medial epicondylitis, lateral epicondylitis, and nerve compression syndromes, are reviewed with attention to characteristic …

The Elbow Ulnar Collateral Ligament Injury Prognosis Score.

BACKGROUND: No model exists to predict which patients with elbow ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries will successfully return to play (RTP) after nonoperative treatment. The reported rates for successful RTP after the nonoperative management of UCL injuries are limited and vary widely. Furthermore, patient and injury characteristics that influence the failure of nonoperative treatment have not been established. PURPOSE: To identify patient- and injury-specific factors predictive of successful RTP after the nonoperative management of UCL injuries in baseball players. STUDY DESIGN: Retros…

Hand and Elbow Nerve Entrapments: MR Imaging Evaluation.

Entrapment neuropathies are the result of compression, displacement, traction, or irritation of peripheral nerves due to anatomic and/or dynamic factors at specific anatomic sites. This article reviews the current magnetic resonance neurography techniques, image evaluation considerations, and specific features of ulnar, median, and radial nerve entrapments at the most common locations at the elbow, forearm, and wrist.

Pediatric Isolated Anterior Elbow Dislocation: A Case Report.

CASE: Anterior dislocation of the elbow is rare in children. This case involves a 9-year-old boy with an anterior dislocation of the right elbow. During surgery, the distal humerus was found to have buttonholed through the triceps and anconeus fascia. An open reduction was performed, and the avulsed periosteal sleeve was sutured back to the humeral origin. The elbow was stable with a mild flexion deformity at the last follow-up, 1 year after surgery. CONCLUSION: This case highlights an uncommon elbow injury with an unusual mechanism, emphasising the need to consider anterior dislocation in si…

Gracilis Free Flap Technique for Elbow Flexion Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Brachial plexus injuries (BPI) can be devastating for patients, often resulting in notable physical, psychological, and socioeco … eatment of pan-plexus injuries focuses on restoring antigravity motion of the upper extremity, with elbow flexion being a high priority muscle group2. Although nerve transfers are an excellent option, this treatment path is not always viable. In such cases, free functioning muscle transfers, especially gracilis transfers, have emerged as a primary recon …

Anterior radial head subluxation in primary elbow osteoarthritis.

PURPOSE: To investigate elbows with primary osteoarthritis (OA) for the presence of anterior radial head subluxation. METHODS: A total of 71 patients with elbow osteoarthritis and 45 with lateral epicondylitis were initially identified. The baseline characteristics and preoperative elbow X-rays of consecutive patients that had been clinically confirmed with elbow OA or lateral epicondylitis between March 2011 and January 2020 were then retrospectively reviewed. The radiocapitellar ratio (RCR; the ratio of the displacement of the radial head about the diameter of the capitulum) was calculated …

Interventions for treating supracondylar elbow fractures in children.

BACKGROUND: Elbow supracondylar fractures are common, with treatment decisions based on fracture displacement. However, there remains controversy regarding the best treatments for this injury. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects (benefits and harms) of interventions for treating supracondylar elbow fractures in children. SEARCH METHODS: We searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE, and Embase in March 2021. We also searched trial registers and reference lists. We applied no language or publication restrictions. SELECTION CRITERIA: We included randomised and quasi-randomised controlled trials comparing differ…

Rehabilitation and Return to Sport Following Elbow Injuries.

Elbow injuries are frequently seen in throwing and overhead athletes. This review provides a framework for diagnosis, treatment, and particularly rehabilitation of common elbow pathologies, including ulnar collateral ligament injury, valgus extension overload, and medial and lateral epicondylitis. Advanced rehabilitation facilitates complete return to functional sport-specific activity and is based on objective criteria. As diagnostic and therapeutic modalities improve our understanding of elbow pathologies in the athletic patient, continued research will further elucidate objective evidence-b…
