BACKGROUND: Pain is the main symptom of patients with temporomandibular disorder (TMD).
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of cathodal high-voltage electrical stimulation (HVES) on pain intensity in women with TMD.
METHODS: Twenty women with TMD (24.25 ± 8.90 years old) participated in the study. They were divided into experimental group (EG, n=10), which received 10 applications of HVES, and placebo group (PG, n=10), which received sham treatment with disconnected HVES equipment. For the sample selection, we used the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorder (RDC/TMD). Pain

This study compared the metabolic efficiency of volitional cycling and functional-electrical-stimulation (FES) cycling within a subject group of able-bodied individuals, with a view to further elucidating the mechanisms underlying the low efficiency of FES cycling. Previous studies estimated the metabolic efficiency of volitional cycling and anaesthetised FES cycling in able-bodied subjects, and of FES cycling in subjects paralysed by spinal cord injury. The rationale for the experimental model chosen here, i.e. non-anaesthetised able-bodied subjects, was that this lies between normal cycling

Meniere's disease is characterized by sporadic episodes of vertigo, nystagmus, fluctuating sensorineural hearing loss, tinnitus and aural pressure. Since Meniere's disease can affect different regions of the vestibular labyrinth, we investigated if electrical vestibular stimulation (EVS) which excites the entire vestibular labyrinth may be useful to reveal patchy endorgan pathology. We recorded three-dimensional electrically evoked vestibulo-ocular reflex (eVOR) to transient EVS using bilateral, bipolar 100-ms current steps at intensities of 0.9, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 mA with dual-search coil

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) in the globus pallidus internus (GPi) has been shown to improve dystonia, a movement disorder of repetitive twisting movements and postures. DBS at frequencies above 60 Hz improves dystonia, but the mechanisms underlying this frequency dependence are unclear. In patients undergoing dual-microelectrode mapping of the GPi, microstimulation has been shown to reduce neuronal firing, presumably due to synaptic GABA release. This study examined the effects of different microstimulation frequencies (1-100 Hz) and train length (0.5-20 s), with and without prior high-freque

OBJECTIVES: Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) of the calf muscles has been shown to cause instantaneous increases in venous outflow from the lower leg and could be used as an adjunct to current gold-standard compression therapies for the prevention of venous stasis and its related pathologies. However, little is known about the effects of NMES in combination with compression therapies on subject comfort, compliance and popliteal venous blood flow over the course of a week-long NMES protocol. This study aimed to assess the effects of a NMES and compression protocol for the prevention

INTRODUCTION: We conducted motor- and sensory-evoked potential analyses and investigated their diagnostic value in differentiating between electrical burns without evidence of neurologic injury and those with clinical evidence of myelopathy.
METHODS: We studied high-voltage electrical burn injury patients with lower extremity weakness and evidence of myelopathy and those without any evidence of neurological complications. Motor-evoked potentials (MEPs), somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs), and MRI studies of the spinal cord, as well as transcranial magnetic stimulations, were performed. Th

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Adults with cerebral palsy (CP) are at risk for decreased mobility and health complications, and exercise may combat some of these negative changes. Because people with CP have difficulty generating sufficient muscle force, exercise augmented with functional electrical stimulation (FES) is an option for increasing exercise intensity. This mixed-method (quantitative-qualitative) case report describes the effects-across the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) model-of cycling with FES (FES cycling) in an adult with CP.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Both patients and care providers are concerned about the adverse events associated with pharmaceutical approaches used in postoperative pain management. Acupuncture and transcutaneous-electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) are complementary treatment techniques and are very popular in the management of a variety of painful conditions. Therefore, their use might help to reduce opioid requirements and decrease the incidence of medication-related adverse events. The aim of this review is to summarize the latest findings on the use of acupuncture and TENS in postoperative pain mana

Neurogenic inflammation (NI) is a feature of several inflammatory pain conditions in which females are overrepresented. Therefore, we asked if there are sex differences in the inflammatory response evoked by well known neurogenic stimuli. We compared the amount of plasma extravasation (PE), a measure of inflammation, in the hindpaw skin of male and female rats caused by subcutaneous injection of capsaicin, application of noxious heat (51 degrees C water bath) or electrical stimulation of the saphenous nerve. We also compared the amount of PE in males and females evoked by substance P (SP), the

CONCLUSION: Under the condition of delayed intervention (30 days after deafening) following gentamicin+furosemide deafening in rats, we conclude that chronic intracochlear electrical stimulation (ES) and continuous intracochlear administration of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) enhance spiral ganglion cell (SGC) body and peripheral process survival and improve auditory sensitivity. Moreover, the combination of ES and BDNF has a synergistic protective effect rather than an additive effect. Both SGC body and peripheral process influence the auditory sensitivity, and the latter appears t

In this paper, we study the effect of stimulation of the genioglossus with percutaneous biphasic electrical pulses on patients with the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). The experiment was conducted in 22 patients clinically diagnosed with OSAS. The patients were monitored with polysomnography (PSG) in the trial. When the sleep apnea was detected, the genioglossus was stimulated with percutaneous biphasic electrical pulses that were automatically regulated by a microcontroller to achieve the optimal effect. The percutaneous biphasic electrical stimulation caused contraction of the genio

BACKGROUND: Electrical stimulation of damaged peripheral nerve may aid regeneration.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether 1 mA of percutaneous electrical stimulation at 1, 2, 20, or 200 Hz augments regeneration between the proximal and distal nerve stumps.
METHODS: A10-mm gap was made in rat sciatic nerve by suturing the stumps into silicone rubber tubes. A control group received no stimulation. Starting 1 week after transection, electrical stimulation was applied between the cathode placed at the distal stump and the anode at the proximal stump every other day for 6

The failure of available antiepileptic medications to adequately control seizures in a substantial number of patients underscores the need to develop novel epilepsy therapies. Recent advancements in technology and the success of neuromodulation in treating a variety of neurological disorders have spurred interest in exploring promising therapeutic alternatives, such as electrical stimulation and gene-based synaptic control. A variety of different stimulation approaches to seizure control targeting structures in the central or peripheral nervous system have been investigated. Most studies have

The L. tredecimguttatus venom was collected by electrical stimulation and systematically analyzed. Gel electrophoresis and RP-HPLC showed that the venom consisted primarily of proteins with molecular weights above 10 kDa, most of which were high-molecular-mass acidic proteins, with fewer proteins and peptides below 10 kDa. The most abundant proteins in the venom were concentrated at around 100 kDa, which included latrotoxins- the principal toxic components of the venom. Injection of the venom in mice and cockroaches P. americana gave rise to obvious poisoned symptoms, with LD50 values of 0.16

A case study investigating the impact of sensory electrical stimulation during perturbed stance in one chronic stroke patient is presented. A special apparatus called the BalanceTrainer was used. It allows the application of perturbations to neurologically impaired people during standing, while protecting the subject from falling. The subject underwent two different periods of perturbation training, each lasting ten days. During the first period the subject was perturbed in eight different directions. During the second period the subject was also perturbed, but was assisted by sensory electric
