In neutral medium, rifamycin antibiotics such as rifapentin (RFPT), rifampicin (RFP), rifandin (RFD) and rifamycin SV (RFSV) can bind with human serum albumin (HSA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) to form complexes, resulting in the quenching of the intrinsic fluorescence (lambda(ex)/lambda(em) = 285/355 nm) of the BSA and HSA. X-ray crystal structures suggest that F131 interacts with fluoroaromatic inhibitors, while P202, on the opposite side of the active site cleft, serves as the site of the hydrophobic contact in the case of the F131V mutant. 2-Fluorinated compounds bind more tightly, perhaps due to the field effect of the nearby fluorine on the acidity of the amide proton.

PURPOSE: To review current opinion on the production and temporal evolution of low-LET radiobiological damage.
METHODS: Standard cell survival models which model repair/misrepair kinetics in order to quantify dose-response relations and dose-protraction effects are reviewed and interrelated. Extensions of the models to endpoints other than cell survival, to multiple or compound damage processing pathways, and to stochastic intercellular damage fluctuations are surveyed. Various molecular mechanisms are considered, including double strand breaks restitution and binary misrepair.

PURPOSE: To provide data on the dose-and linear energy transfer (LET)-dependence of the production of dicentrics in human lymphocytes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Track segment irradiation with 16.5 MeV protons was performed in a multi-layer array allowing the simultaneous exposure of human peripheral lymphocytes in three successive samples.
