The synergy between two risk factors measures the extent to which each of them is more harmful in combination with the other than when acting alone. Relative risk models which describe interaction between risk factors with a few parameters are well adapted to the quantification of synergy. A simple measure of synergy and a method for its estimation with the help of relative risk models are proposed. This concept of synergy provides a simple interpretation of the non-linear parameter of several classical relative risk models. The discussion is illustrated with examples taken from cancer epidemi

A non-Euclidean metric, stable to pollutions in sample data, for hierarchical cluster analysis in epidemiology is proposed. The simplicity of calculations permits its easy use in practice. On the basis of this metric the towns of Tula Province have been grouped according to morbidity rates in the shigellosis of Flexner and Sonne with the conjugated value of parameters.

A landscape approach using remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS) technologies was developed to discriminate between villages at high and low risk for malaria transmission, as defined by adult Anopheles albimanus abundance. Satellite data for an area in southern Chiapas, Mexico were digitally processed to generate a map of landscape elements. The GIS processes were used to determine the proportion of mapped landscape elements surrounding 40 villages where An. albimanus abundance data had been collected. The relationships between vector abundance and landscape element proportion

Artificial intelligence (AI) is expanding the capacity of public health systems to detect infectious disease signals, forecast outbreaks, analyse pathogen evolution, generate localised risk estimates, and support operational decisions. The thirteenth session of the WHO Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence Innovation Forum brought together experts from academic, public health, and technology organisations to examine current applications of AI in infectious disease modelling and pandemic preparedness. Examples included genomic surveillance, hybrid epidemiological and machine-learning models, spati

We propose a fractional-order differential equation model to study the gender-specific transmission dynamics of human papillomavirus (HPV). Due to limited gender-disaggregated HPV data, oropharyngeal cancer incidence was used as a proxy. The model includes a theoretical analysis of disease-free and endemic equilibria and computation of the basic reproduction number, with stability conditions derived for both cases. Structural identifiability was confirmed using differential algebra, and data fitting indicated that the fractional models $ (\alpha = 0.9) $ better captured U.S. dynamics, while cl

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive memory loss and cognitive decline. It involves the irreversible destruction of higher brain structures, leading to significant cognitive deficits, personality changes, and aberrant behavior. Key pathological features include the accumulation of amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques and hyperphosphorylated tau protein neurofibrillary tangles, which disrupt cellular communication and neuron function. Chronic inflammation, vascular abnormalities, and genetic factors like the APOE (apolipoprotein E) ε4 allele also

The usage of structured population models can make substantial contributions to public health, particularly for infections where clinical outcomes vary over age. There are three theoretical challenges in implementing such analyses: (i) developing an appropriate framework that models both demographic and epidemiological transitions; (ii) parameterizing the framework, where parameters may be based on data ranging from the biological course of infection, basic patterns of human demography, specific characteristics of population growth, and details of vaccination regimes implemented; (iii) evaluat

This paper uses relatively simple and deterministic mathematical models to examine the impact that different immunization policies have on the age-specific incidence of rubella and measles. Following earlier work by Knox (1980) and others, we show that immunization programmes can, under some circumstances, increase the total number of cases among older age groups; the implications for the overall incidence of measles encephalitis and of congenital rubella syndrome are examined, paying attention both to the eventual equilibrium and to the short-term effect in the first few decades after immuniz

Since the early 1960s, when aflatoxin, the mold-produced contaminant of a number of important food commodities, was found to be a potent hepatocarcinogen for laboratory rats, there has been a sustained search for evidence to support the regulatory presumption that aflatoxin is a probable human carcinogen. The developing laboratory evidence of differences between species in metabolism of aflatoxin and susceptibility to its oncogenic effects indicated that humans were probably refractory to aflatoxin carcinogenesis, but the early epidemiological evidence indicated otherwise. That epidemiological

UNLABELLED: A cohort of 536 workers was enrolled from 10 diverse manufacturing facilities and was followed monthly for six years. Job physical exposures were individually measured. Worker demographics, medical history, psychosocial factors, current musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and nerve conduction studies (NCS) were obtained. Point and lifetime prevalence of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) at baseline (symptoms + abnormal NCS) were 10.3% and 19.8%. During follow-up, there were 35 new CTS cases (left, right or both hands). Factors predicting development of CTS included: job physical exposure (

In this paper, we present a brief, nonexhaustive overview of the features we consider most relevant in models for mosquito-transmitted infections, comparing them with the corresponding features in models for directly-transmitted infections. In particular, we focus on the basic reproduction number $ \mathcal{R}_0 $ and its relations with the exponential growth rate, the probability of an outbreak, and the final size of the epidemic. The concept of a threshold for epidemic spread based on the basic reproduction number ($ \mathcal{R}_0 > 1 $) was first introduced by Ronald Ross for malaria. Later

Deterministic dynamical models are widely used in infectious disease modelling, but they often become systematically biased when key drivers such as seasonality and random environmental variation are simplified or omitted. This paper proposes a practical way to account for structural bias while preserving the underlying mechanistic model. We model the observed time series as the sum of (i) a deterministic transmission component given by a reduced Ross malaria model and (ii) a latent stochastic seasonal component that captures unresolved seasonal forcing and other unmodelled variability. The se

BACKGROUND: Modelling efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of incorporating human behaviour into mathematical models and the challenges of making accurate forecasts. Case detection is affected by different healthcare-seeking behaviors, including visiting physicians to seek help, which can impact the number of laboratory tests performed and the number of cases identified by surveillance systems throughout an epidemic. Mathematical models for forecasting epidemics of respiratory viruses such as influenza and COVID-19 generally assume a constant rate of case detection,

Assessments of spatial risk of exposure to vector-borne pathogens that combine vector and human disease data are needed for areas encompassing large tracts of public land with low population bases. We addressed this need for West Nile virus (WNV) disease in the northern Colorado Front Range by developing not only a spatial model for entomological risk of exposure to Culex tarsalis WNV vectors and an epidemiological risk map for WNV disease but also a novel risk-classification index combining data for these independently derived measures of entomological and epidemiological risk. Risk of vector

INTRODUCTION: This study quantifies excess mortality in Spain during and after the COVID-19 pandemic and assesses whether mortality levels are returning to pre-pandemic patterns.
METHODS: Expected mortality was estimated using stochastic forecasting models calibrated on pre-pandemic data (1990-2019) and compared with observed mortality over the period 2020-2023. The analysis relies on a multi-model framework including the Lee-Carter, Cairns-Blake-Dowd, and age-period-cohort models.
RESULTS: The results show a substantial excess mortality during the pandemic years, with the proportion of ages

Prostate cancer is the archetypal hormone-dependent cancer in men, mirroring breast cancer in women. The increase in its prevalence over time raises questions, and occupational exposure data, particularly among agricultural workers, have shown a probable or possible link with exposure to certain endocrine disruptors. The best-known of these is probably chlordecone, used in the French West Indies and responsible for an increased risk of prostate cancer. Outside these situations of occupational and/or acute exposure, it is more difficult to prove that endocrine disruptors are responsible for pro

Increased susceptibility to co-infection with enteric Gram-negative bacteria, particularly non-typhoidal Salmonella, is reported in malaria and Oroya fever (Bartonella bacilliformis infection), and can lead to increased mortality. Accumulating epidemiological evidence indicates a causal association with risk of bacterial co-infection, rather than just co-incidence of common risk factors. Both malaria and Oroya fever are characterized by hemolysis, and observations in humans and animal models suggest that hemolysis causes the susceptibility to bacterial co-infection. Evidence from animal models

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a complex disease, with genetics and environment contributing to the disease onset. Recent studies of causative PD genes have confirmed the involvement of cellular mechanisms engaged in mitochondrial and UPS dysfunction, oxidative stress and apoptosis in the progressive degeneration of the dopaminergic neurons in PD. In addition, clinical, epidemiological and experimental evidence has implicated neuroinflammation in the disease progression. This review will discuss neuroinflammation in PD, with particular focus on the genetic and toxin-based models of the disease. T

Stage-transition models based on the American Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) generally are applied in epidemiology and genetics research on drug dependence syndromes associated with cannabis, cocaine, and other internationally regulated drugs (IRDs). Difficulties with DSM stage-transition models have surfaced during cross-national research intended to provide a truly global perspective, such as the work of the World Mental Health Surveys Consortium. Alternative simpler dependence-related phenotypes are possible, including population-level count process models for steps early and befor
