This study examined how nursing home staff adapt to challenging mealtime behaviors in residents with dementia, such as turning away or refusing food. Ten focus groups were conducted with 52 clinical and administrative staff from three southeastern U.S. nursing homes. Transcripts were analyzed using four key codes: feeding behaviors, interventions, training, and communication. Staff described a range of mealtime challenges, including cognitive and functional decline, dysphagia, and elopement. Feeding-related behaviors like refusing to eat reflect the complexity of care required. Staff reported

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: It is generally accepted that all interventions carried out by mental health nurses involve engagement with the patient; this engagement is a process that is gradually constructed and is not immediate. In Spain during last decade, nurses working in assertive outreach teams have gradually replaced the traditional institutional setting in favour of environments that are more familiar to the patient. In contrast, when patients and nurses interact outside institutional settings, a new approach and skillset is required in order to adapt to the new environment. WHAT TH

Hospital nurses are exposed to various occupational hazards, some of which are dangerous or even fatal. This systematic review aimed to synthesize evidence regarding occupational hazards and nurses' protective behaviors in hospital settings. Following PRISMA guidelines and the PICO framework, a comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Scopus up to 2024. Original quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method studies were screened, quality-assessed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT), and narratively synthesized. 56 original studies were included. BACKGROUND: Delirium is a complex neuropsychiatric syndrome characterized by acute and fluctuating disturbances in attention, cognition, and consciousness. Despite its significant impact on patient outcomes, a gap persists between clinical practice and evidence-based approaches for delirium prevention and management. This study aims to systematically explore nurses' perceptions of delirium risk factors, identify which factors they prioritize, and examine the reasoning behind their prioritization using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). By addressing these objectives, this study identified p

BACKGROUND: After terminal extubation, more than 30% of patients experience a period of persistent dyspnea. Practices regarding terminal extubation at the end of life vary widely, and evidence for practice superiority is lacking. Critical care nurses are often tasked with making intervention decisions.
LOCAL PROBLEM: At a 368-bed acute care hospital, nurses reported a lack of training on managing end-of-life symptoms associated with terminal extubation and the need for a standardized protocol to guide assessment and interventions. The aim of this study was to examine how use of an evidence-ba

INTRODUCTION: Delirium and dementia represent significant cognitive impairment (CI) challenges in older adults globally, yet undergraduate nursing students receive limited education on these conditions, particularly delirium superimposed on dementia (DSD). Mixed reality (MR) simulation using HoloPatient technology offers innovative educational opportunities, but its effectiveness has not been rigorously evaluated using mixed methods approaches. This study examined the effect of MR simulation-based education on nursing students’ knowledge of CI and attitude towards older adults with CI, and exp

BACKGROUND: Despite evidence of cerebral vulnerability in the early postnatal period, neonates diagnosed with mild hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) may not routinely receive continuous neuromonitoring, limiting opportunities for timely neuroprotective interventions. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) offers continuous, noninvasive monitoring of cerebral oxygenation; however, standardized, nurse-driven, clinical practice guidelines (CPG) for NIRS use in this population are lacking.
