Vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials and caloric stimulation in infants with congenital cytomegalovirus infection.

BACKGROUND: The influence of congenital cytomegalovirus infection on cochlear function has been well recognised; however, its impact on the vestibular system in infants has not been examined. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate vestibular function in a group of infants, using caloric stimulation tests and vestibular-evoked myogenic potential measurements. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials and auditory brainstem responses were recorded and caloric stimulation was performed in 66 infants aged three months, comprising 40 healthy controls and 26 infants wit

The influence of unilateral versus bilateral clicks on the vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials.

OBJECTIVE: Because a continuous muscular effort is required during recording of vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials, we assume vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials elicited by simultaneous bilateral clicks can be used as a more convenient mode compared with respective unilateral clicks. To investigate whether bilateral clicks provide the same information as unilateral clicks, we examined whether the responses are different between them in normal subjects and whether bilateral clicks have the same diagnostic value as vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials elicited by unilateral clicks in dete

[Endogenous potentials evoked by acoustic stimulus in children with idiopathic headache--preliminary report].

PURPOSE: Endogenous evoked potentials (P300) are elicited by several stimuli, and are electrophysiological consequence of cognitive processing. Abnormalities have often been reported in dementive syndromes, demyelinating diseases, metabolic disorders, CNS tumors, phacomatoses, neuroinfections, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and epilepsy. The role of this element of neurophysiological characteristics is debated in migraine, pato-genetically undefined, and other primary headaches. THE AIM: The aim of this research was to determine whether the parameters of endogenous responses to the …

Visual evoked potentials in konzo, a spastic paraparesis of acute onset in Africa.

AIM: To assess whether or not visual evoked potentials (VEPs) are abnormal in konzo, a para/tetraparesis of sudden onset, and to correlate the findings to the clinical picture of the disorder. METHODS: VEPs were recorded in 23 patients (9 men and 14 women, mean age: 23 +/- 10 years) suffering from konzo, and 38 healthy subjects (20 men and 18 women, mean age: 27 +/- 15 years). The mean P100 latencies and peak-to-peak N75-P100 amplitudes of each eye were measured and compared in the two groups. The mean interocular P100 latency and amplitude differences were calculated and also compared. RESU…

Visual field defects and multifocal visual evoked potentials: evidence of a linear relationship.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between spatially localized multifocal visual evoked potentials (mfVEPs) and Humphrey visual fields (HVFs) in patients with unilateral field defects. METHODS: Humphrey visual fields and mfVEPs were obtained from 20 patients with unilateral field losses due to either ischemic optic neuropathy or glaucoma. Monocular mfVEPs were obtained for each eye. The amplitude of the mfVEP responses was calculated using root-mean-square and signal-noise ratio measures. Estimates of the HVF loss in the same regions of the field used for the mfVEP were obtained by inte…

Electrophysiological correlates of the visual after effect by means of visual evoked potentials.

An attempt was made to determine whether changes of electrical activity could be seen in the posterior cortex during an after image of high frequency luminance gratings. Steady state visual evoked potentials were recorded (midoccipital, right and left temporo-occipital sites) immediately after a period of visual adaptation (15 min) to the stimulus, while the subjects experienced the after image. During this illusion, frequencies of the fast Fourier transform spectra linked to the stimulation differed from the noise and were larger at temporo-occipital sites than at the midoccipital one. In vie…

[Role of evoked potentials in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy: review of the literature].

Results of the studies on evoked potentials (EP) in neonates with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy and their technical feasibility support extensive application in neonatal intensive care units. The combined application of visual evoked potentials (VEP) and somestesic evoked potentials (SEP) is the method of choice for neurodevelopmental prognostication in full-term neonate; especially useful in cases with moderate encephalopathy; in preterm neonates EP are complementary to head ultrasound scans, particularly early on when the findings are in the process of evolution. Brainstem auditory evoked…

Comparison of auditory evoked potentials in heterosexual, homosexual, and bisexual males and females.

The auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) elicited by click stimuli were measured in heterosexual, homosexual, and bisexual males and females having normal hearing sensitivity. Estimates of latency and/or amplitude were extracted for nine peaks having latencies of about 2-240 ms, which are presumed to correspond to populations of neurons located from the auditory nerve through auditory cortex. For five of the 19 measures obtained, the mean latency or amplitude for the 57 homosexual and bisexual females was different from that of the 49 heterosexual females in a manner that implies a masculinizatio…

Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials in acoustic tumor patients with normal auditory brainstem responses.

In order to clarify the utility of the vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) in detecting acoustic tumors, we report two patients who were found to have normal auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) and abnormal VEMPs. To record VEMPs, electromyographic responses to brief loud clicks (0.1 ms at 95 dBnHL) were amplified and averaged on the sternocleidomastoid muscle ipsilateral to the stimulated side. The stimulation rate was 5 Hz and the analysis time 50 ms. The first case was a 54-year-old woman in whom VEMPs were absent on the affected side while caloric tests and ABRs were normal. The se

Midlatency auditory-evoked potentials in the rat: effects of interventions that modulate arousal.

The vertex-recorded P13 midlatency auditory-evoked potential in the rat shows the same characteristics as the P1 potential in the human, namely, sleep-state dependence, rapid habituation and blockade by the cholinergic antagonist scopolamine. The P13 potential appears to be generated, at least in part, by projections of the pedunculopontine nucleus, the cholinergic arm of the reticular activating system. On the other hand, the auditory cortex-recorded P7 potential appears to be of primary cortical origin. Simultaneous recordings from the vertex and the auditory cortex showed that (1) the P13 p
