BACKGROUND: Hypothenar hammer syndrome (HHS) is an uncommon vascular syndrome of upper extremity. HHS should be considered in patients who are presented with digital ischemia. Distal ulnar artery compression at the level of Guyon's canal with trauma results in thrombus or aneurysm. It may be observed after repetitive chronic trauma or acute blunt trauma to hypothenar eminence. Middle-aged male laborers, smokers, and dominant hands are affected frequently. Hand pain, discoloration or ulceration of digits, cold intolerance, hypothenar pulsatile mass, hypothenar weakness, and numbness are signifi

There are few reports of a transverse colon inguinal hernia; furthermore, an inguinal hernia perforating the scrotum is rare. Here we report the case of a 79-year-old man who died after developing an incarcerated colon inguinal hernia that perforated the scrotum and exhibited an air-fluid level. The patient was referred to our hospital in November 2011 with a complaint of inability to move. Physical examination revealed an abnormally enlarged left scrotum and cold extremities. He reported a history of gastric cancer that was surgically treated more than 30 years ago. His white blood cell count

There is a lack of information concerning human health risks due to exposure to mercury contained in shark fins, through dietary intake. Health risk assessment of shark fins, collected from 5 cities in China: Hong Kong (HK), Beijing, Shanghai (SH), Haikou (HN) and Wenzhou (WZ), was conducted, based on total mercury and methylmercury, and analyzed by a cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrometry equipped with high-performance liquid chromatography, respectively. The results showed that 16.8 % samples from HK, 8.3 % from SH, 33.3 % from HN, and 16.8 % from WZ were regarded as unsafe for human co

Dental pulp has the ability of repair/regeneration. Indirect pulp therapy (IPT) is recommended for pulp preservation in asymptomatic teeth with extremely deep caries as well as teeth with clinical symptoms of reversible pulpitis. In this case study, we performed IPT with calcium enriched mixture (CEM) cement on a symptomatic permanent molar. After clinical/radiographic examinations the tooth was diagnosed with irreversible pulpitis and associated apical periodontitis. IPT involved partial caries removal, the placement of CEM cement pulp cap and overlying adhesive permanent restoration. At the

Acquired acro-osteolysis (AOL) is defined as the resorption of bone from the tufts or shafts of the terminal phalanges. Acquired acro-osteolysis can manifest as a primary osteolysis syndrome and also appears in a number of disease states including rheumatologic disorders, neuropathic diseases, the result of prolonged exposure to polyvinyl chloride, and in rare cases, as a response to repeated mechanical stress. In this report, a 46-year-old surfer was evaluated for AOL as a complication of sports-related repetitive trauma to the right second and third toes. Radiography showed the bony tips of

BACKGROUND: Many polio patients develop problems such as cold intolerance in the affected limbs, which seems to be due to sympathetic nervous system dysfunction. This study aimed to investigate whether there is a sympathetic system dysfunction in old-polio patients by means of the systematic skin response test.
METHOD: Forty old-polio patients and 20 healthy subjects were included in the study. Disease duration was 31.5 years (19-49 years) in the patient group. Sympathetic skin responses were obtained in all the subjects' limbs. Thirteen patients had right lower limb paresis/paralysis, 14 had

Background and aims Hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies (HNPP) is an autosomal - dominant hereditary neuropathy caused by a deficiency in the peripheral protein PMP-22, due to deletion on chromosome 17p11,2 or in some rare cases point mutations in the PMP-22 gene. The clinical picture is characterized by recurrent mononeuropathies in nerves which frequently may be exposed to pressure, such as the median, ulnar, radial and peroneal nerves or also a more general neuropathy. Although pain is reported to be an unusual clinical symptom, there have been reports of pain in a surp

A medium-latency response (MLR) has been recorded from soleus during stance and walking, and has been attributed to stretch-evoked volleys in group II afferents. The present paper describes a MLR in soleus evoked by stimulating the deep peroneal nerve, documents its characteristics and addresses its likely origin. The MLR of soleus was recorded in healthy subjects and hemiplegic patients, following electrical stimulation of the deep peroneal nerve at the fibula at rest, during voluntary dorsiflexion, during plantar flexion, during external restraint to the ankle dorsiflexion movement, during l

All organisms must quickly acclimate to short-term environmental temperature changes to maintain optimal physiology. Temperature excursions far from the optimum lead to heat- or cold-shock responses, which have been extensively studied. We hypothesized that, even within a physiological range of temperature whose extremes are not stressful by themselves, the need for constant adjustment to frequent temperature fluctuations might be deleterious. We find that frequent fluctuations between physiological temperatures severely impair the short-term survival of C. elegans in a frequency-dependent man

Congenital hemangioma (CH) is a rare form of vascular anomaly that develops prenatally, is difficult to differentiate from other vascular anomalies, and poses significant risks, including heart failure and severe hemorrhage. Herein, we present the case of a female infant born with a dark red mass measuring 30 mm × 20 mm in size, located on the right temporal region. She was referred to us for outpatient follow-up but presented to the emergency department on day 21 of life with a massive pulsatile hemorrhage originating from the mass. The patient simultaneously presented with tachycardia and co

A 25-year-old morbidly obese female and heavy smoker sustained a traumatic right knee dislocation after falling down a stairwell. Initial radiography revealed posteromedial tibial displacement with valgus deformity with resultant vascular compromise. Despite closed reduction, sustained arterial compromise persisted, with weak pulses and cold extremity. CT angiography showed right popliteal artery filling defect, consistent with thrombosis or dissection, which was confirmed to be occluded by conventional angiography, prompting urgent thrombectomy using the Penumbra aspiration system followed by

Persistent sciatic artery is a rare congenital anomaly, with few cases described in the literature. This study presents a case of this embryological variation observed in a patient's lower limb circulatory system. The anatomical description is based on a review of medical records and imaging exams. This case report describes a 63-year-old female patient admitted to the emergency department complaining of severe pain in the right lower limb, with a cold, pale extremity and ecchymosis on the dorsum of the foot. Duplex ultrasound showed no detectable flow in the anterior tibial and fibular arteri

BACKGROUND: Several coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19)-associated complications are being increasingly reported, including arterial and venous thrombo-embolic events that may lead to amputation of the affected limbs. So far, acute upper limb ischaemia (ULI) has been reported only in critically ill patients.
CASE SUMMARY: Herein, we aimed to present a case of a 29-year-old, otherwise healthy male volleyball player, with acute ischaemic signs in the upper extremity who was diagnosed with COVID-19 1 month before the ischaemic event. It has been shown that volleyball players experience repetitive

BACKGROUND: Glomus tumors are soft tissue neoplasms comprised of glomus cells, vasculature, and smooth muscle cells, which occur commonly in a single subungual area of the digits, and their main clinical features include severe paroxysmal pain, localized tenderness, and cold hypersensitivity.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old Japanese man had suffered from chronic progressive paroxysmal shooting pain in his right leg since childhood. He avoided putting weight on his right foot whenever he walked. The frequency of paroxysmal pain and the number of tender points both gradually increased with age

A 35-year-old male developed sensory abnormality of peripheral limbs and oral cavity after prior infection with diarrhea and cold symptoms. Hyperrhinolalia, nasopharyngeal reflux, double vision, and wobbling in walking rapidly progressed. Neurological examination revealed palatoplegia, omnidirectional ophthalmoplegia, hyperreflexia, sensory disturbance of extremities, and truncal and limb ataxia due to decreased deep sensation. A peripheral nerve conduction study found a slight decrease in sensory nerve action potential of the median nerve and a decrease in F wave frequency of the median nerve

INTRODUCTION: Raynaud's disease is a disorder that is characterized by attacks of pain, cyanosis, redness, and numbness in the upper extremities caused by vasospasm of digital arteries due to cold or emotional stress. We aimed at demonstrating our experiences with endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS) in the treatment of Raynaud's disease.
METHODS: From 48 patients who underwent ETS for various reasons at our department between January 2014 and January 2015, we reviewed 9 patients with Raynaud's disease (18.7%) with respect to their demographic characteristics such as gender and age, postop

TUBA1A mutations cause a wide spectrum of lissencephaly and brain malformations. Here, we report two patients with severe cortical dysgeneses, one with an extremely thin cerebral parenchyma apparently looking like hydranencephaly and the other with lissencephaly accompanied by marked hydrocephalus, both harbouring novel de novo missense mutations of TUBA1A. To elucidate how the various TUBA1A mutations affect the severity of the phenotype, we examined the capacity of the mutant protein to incorporate into the endogenous microtubule network in transfected COS7 cells by measuring line density us
