PURPOSE: To report a case of exudative retinal detachment caused by a choroidal neovascular membrane in Hallermann-Streiff syndrome.
METHODS: The authors report a 7-year-old white male with Hallermann-Streiff syndrome who developed exudative retinal detachments secondary to choroidal neovascular membrane that resolved after off-label use of intravitreal injections of bevacizumab 1.25 mg.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae lipooligosaccharides (LOSs) induce immunoglobulin G that protects men from experimental infection. This raises the possibility that an LOS vaccine might prevent gonorrhea. We evaluated the clinical significance and possible association of febrile morbidity with sonographically detected post-hysterectomy fluid collections. Transvaginal ultrasound examinations were performed to assess the presence of fluid collections and correlated to clinical data. Prostate-specific antigen, a 33 kDa serine protease, is found at high concentrations in seminal plasma and prostate epithelial cells. It is currently used for the diagnosis and monitoring of prostate carcinoma. However, several investigators have demonstrated nonprostatic sources of prostate specific antigen, including amniotic fluid, breast milk, breast cyst fluid, nipple aspirate fluid, and breast tumor cytosol. Bilateral disk swelling and marked peripapillary and macular exudates were found on routine ophthalmologic examination in a 12 1/2-year-old girl. Eleven months later, with persistent findings, her blood pressure was found to be extremely elevated. She had an Ask-Upmark kidney, a rare form of segmental renal hypoplasia. The Ask-Upmark kidney abnormality occurs primarily in young women and is associated with hypertension. The disk edema and retinopathy resolved after the hypertension was controlled. Hypertensive retinopathy can sometimes resemble neuroretinitis.

The feasibility of a new ultrasonic technique to distinguish cysts from solid lesions is explored. High intensity pulses are used to induce acoustic streaming in cyst fluid, and this motion is detected using Doppler techniques. Acoustic streaming cannot be generated in solid lesions, therefore, its detection would indicate a cyst. In six of seven breast cysts motion was clearly generated and detected in vivo. We conducted a comparative study in an intensive coronary care unit to elucidate the role of acute exudative pharyngitis in the setting of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The subjects were 42 young male patients with AMI that was preceded by pharyngitis in 7 of them. Quantitative DNA analysis was performed on preoperative fine needle aspirates of 12 breast cancers and 1 benign lesion using the Cell Analysis Systems (CAS) Model 200 image analysis system. The smears were prepared on CAS slides, routinely processed for Papanicolaou staining, and then destained and restained with Feulgen stain after cytologic evaluation. Four cases were DNA diploid, 3 were tetraploid, 1 was diploid/tetraploid, and 5 were aneuploid. When compared to analysis of samples from the resected tumor, both DNA index and S-phase fraction were constant.
