BACKGROUND: Scleritis is a chronic inflammation of the scleral coat of the eye. Although the clinical manifestations of scleritis can follow a benign clinical course, the more serious forms may lead to vision loss and even enucleation of the eye.
METHODS: A case is presented of a 57-year-old woman with a diagnosis of nodular scleritis and attendant ocular manifestations.
RESULTS: Scleritis affects females slightly more frequently than males, and is most commonly found in patients who are 40 to 60 years of age. Patients who are symptomatic in only one eye typically have bilateral involvement

We report a case of a man aged 35 years who presented with the chief complaint of painless diminution of vision in the right eye for 4 months. Examination revealed a large inferior retinochoroidal mass along with retinal detachment. Vitrectomy in the initial treatment of perforating injuries is indicated when lens damage involves the posterior capsule, when anterior segment disruption involves vitreous, with extensive vitreous haemorrhage and overt or suspected retinal damage, in removal of a non-magnetic intraocular foreign body and in perforating injury with endophthalmitis. A review of all penetrating eye injuries treated at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital over 5 years (January 1st 1982 to December 31st 1986) was undertaken. There were 258 penetrating eye injuries of which 69 (26.7%) were due to work-related accidents. All were men and 52 (75.4%) of them were under the age of 40 years. This is a 10-year retrospective review of patients who underwent surgical removal of eyes in a tertiary centre.
