Reproductive factors and family history of breast cancer in relation to plasma estrogen and prolactin levels in postmenopausal women in the Nurses' Health Study (United States).

Parity, age at first birth, age at menarche, and a family history of breast cancer have each been associated consistently with breast cancer risk. Whether this increase in risk is mediated, at least in part, through changes in endogenous hormone levels is unclear. We conducted a cross-sectional study of the relationships between these factors and plasma hormone levels in 216 healthy postmenopausal women in the Nurses' Health Study (United States). The hormones evaluated were estradiol, percent and total free estradiol, percent and total bioavailable estradiol, estrone, estrone sulfate, and pro

Immunohistochemical localization of rat submandibular gland esterase B (homologous to the RSKG-7 kallikrein gene) in relation to other serine proteases of the kallikrein family.

The rat submandibular gland contains several members of the kallikrein family. In the present study we purified and raised an antiserum against one of these enzymes, i.e., esterase B, which was first described by Khullar et al. in 1986. N-terminal amino acid analysis revealed complete homology between esterase B and the kallikrein family gene RSKG-7. For characterization of the antiserum, flat-bed isoelectrofocusing with immunoblotting was superior to immunoelectrophoresis and double immunodiffusion in detecting and identifying crossreacting proteins. This was due to the fact that kallikrein-l

Cultures of human cord blood metachromatic cells in relation to family history of atopy, development of atopic disease, nasal metachromatic cells and perinatal factors.

The appearance of basophilic cells by maturation from progenitors was studied in cultures of cord blood mononuclear cells (CB-MNC) from 83 newborns. In unstimulated cultures, the numbers of basophilic cells increased 5-fold after 14 days of cultivation. This increase and the cell numbers were similar in cultures from atopic individuals and controls. Other cultures were stimulated with conditioned medium (CM) prepared from 3-day cultures of blood cells from atopic individuals activated with allergen or with CM from the Mo leukemic cell line. The addition of such CM resulted in an increase in th

The relationship between FSTL-1 (follistatin-related protein 1), FAM19A5 (family with sequence similarity 19, member A5) and CTRP-6 (C1q/TNF-related protein 6) levels and metabolic parameters in overweight children.

OBJECTIVES: There has been a growing rate of obesity among children and adolescents in recent years. Understanding the molecular mechanisms is crucial for grasping the onset and progression. Adipose tissue is recognized for its role in endocrine functions, releasing adipokines that play a vital role in the metabolic disruptions linked to obesity. Given the involvement of adipokines such as FSTL-1 (follistatin related protein 1), FAM19A5 (family with sequence similarity to 19 member A5), and CTRP-6 (C1q/tumor necrosis factor related protein 6) in this condition, the primary goal of our study wa

Enhancing patient representation learning with inferred family pedigrees improves disease risk prediction.

BACKGROUND: Machine learning and deep learning are powerful tools for analyzing electronic health records (EHRs) in healthcare research. Although family health history has been recognized as a major predictor for a wide spectrum of diseases, research has so far adopted a limited view of family relations, essentially treating patients as independent samples in the analysis. METHODS: To address this gap, we present ALIGATEHR, which models inferred family relations in a graph attention network augmented with an attention-based medical ontology representation, thus accounting for the complex infl…

A Case Series of Familial Macular Drusen: Clinical, Imaging, and Diagnostic Considerations in the Spectrum Between Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and Other Macular Disorders.

Familial clustering of macular drusen in younger adults can mimic age-related macular degeneration (AMD) but may reflect an underlying inherited macular disorder. We describe a 72-year-old Chinese woman with high myopia and advanced neovascular AMD in one eye, who presented with progressive visual decline. Despite anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy, vision remained poor. Concerned about familial risk, her three adult children were examined. All three adult children (aged 46, 38, and 36 years) were asymptomatic despite drusen being detected on examination. This multigenerational cl

Assessing the Effects of Non-Pharmacological Therapies on Musculoskeletal Pain: An Individual Participant Data Analysis of Health-Related Quality of Life in Military Personnel With Family Implications.

INTRODUCTION: Musculoskeletal injury is an inherent risk associated with military training and repeated combat deployment, which can negatively impact the well-being of the service member (SM) and their family. Musculoskeletal pain and inflammation compromise health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and can wield significant tolls that affect job performance, readiness, and family stability. Rehabilitation efforts for these injuries can be beneficial in reducing the impact on the military family. One strategy involves the use of non-pharmaceutical therapeutic interventions that are flexible enou

Unveiling and validating biomarkers related to the IL-10 family in chronic sinusitis with nasal polyps: insights from transcriptomics and single-cell RNA sequencing analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Extensive efforts have been made to explore members of the IL-10 family as potential therapeutic strategies for various diseases; however, their biological role in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) remains underexplored. METHODS: Gene expression datasets GSE136825, GSE179265, and GSE196169 were retrieved from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) for analysis. Candidate genes were identified by intersecting differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the CRSwNP and control groups (DEGsall) with those between the high- and low-score groups within the CRSwNP cohort (

Effect of Parental-Child Age Gaps and Skipped-Generation Families on Comorbidities Related to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Population-Based Case-Control Study.

Background: While attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by neurodevelopmental heterogeneity, the influence of familial structural factors-particularly parental age and skipped-generation caregiving-on comorbidity patterns remains insufficiently studied. This study examined the associations between parent-child age gaps, skipped-generation family structures, and psychiatric comorbidities in children with ADHD. Methods: Data came from Taiwan's NHIRD (2009-2013), including 79,163 ADHD cases and 395,815 matched controls. Key variables included maternal and paternal age a

Polymorphisms in drug-resistant-related genes shared among drug-resistant and pan-susceptible strains of sequence type 10, Beijing family of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Mutations in genes involved in drug metabolism have been well-associated with drug resistance. Sequence analysis of known antimycobacterial drug-resistant genes is often used to predict resistance to antibiotics. However, some polymorphisms in such genes may serve a phylogenetic purpose rather than resistance to drugs. The Beijing family of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) is prevalent worldwide and has been associated with the emergence of multidrug resistance. Sequence type (ST) 10 of the Beijing family is the most predominant in countries like Peru, Taiwan and Thailand. A sequence analysis

A novel bat herpesvirus encodes homologues of major histocompatibility complex classes I and II, C-type lectin, and a unique family of immune-related genes.

Herpesviruses or herpesviral sequences have been identified in various bat species. Here, we report the isolation, cell tropism, and complete genome sequence of a novel betaherpesvirus from the bat Miniopterus schreibersii (MsHV). In primary cell culture, MsHV causes cytopathic effects (CPE) and reaches peak virus production 2 weeks after infection. MsHV was found to infect and replicate less efficiently in a feline kidney cell, CRFK, and failed to replicate in 13 other cell lines tested. Sequencing of the MsHV genome using the 454 system, with a 224-fold coverage, revealed a genome size of 22

Cloning, characterization and identification of Rcet1-v1 and Rcet1-v2, two novel splice variants of mouse Rcet1 related to Cres subgroup of family 2 cystatins.

Cystatins are physiological cysteine proteinase inhibitors. We used digital differential display (DDD) to clone two novel splice variants Rcet1-v1 and Rcet1-v2 which were isolated from adult mouse testis cDNA library. Sequence analysis revealed that Rcet1-v1 and Rcet1-v2 cDNAs are 454 and 610 bp in length, respectively, and each has four exons, but the lengths of their second and third exons are different, with the results that these cDNAs encoded two different putative proteins. The deduced proteins were 88 amino acid residues (RCET1-v1) and 140 residues (RCET1-v2) in length and have one pote
