Incarceration separates individuals from their families and communities, strictly limiting and controlling contact with the outside world. Despite these barriers, those who maintain contact with their families during incarceration tend to function more adaptively postrelease. Within a longitudinal framework, the current study examines mechanisms (i.e., family connectedness, postrelease planning) by which contact with family during incarceration may impact postrelease functioning (i.e., recidivism, substance misuse, mental illness, community functioning), considering differences between type of

This study explored the relationship between intimate partner violence (IPV) and family planning among adolescent girls and young women in formal unions in the Philippines. Analyzing a sample (n =1,566) from the 2013 Philippines Demographic and Health Survey, logistic regression models were separately run for current contraception use and unmet need for family planning on recent physical violence (yes/no), recent sexual violence (yes/no), and recent emotional (yes/no). Findings revealed that the odds of using contraception were significantly higher among girls and young women who reported rece

Brachydactyly type B (BDB) is an autosomal dominant disease caused by mutations in the ROR2 gene. Truncating mutations lead to the severe form of the disease, which is characterized by terminal deficiency of fingers and toes. Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) was carried out in a family suffering from severe BDB. The family was screened for mutations in exons 8 and 9 and found to harbour a known nonsense mutation (c.2265C-->A) in exon 9 of the ROR2 gene, which resulted in a premature stop-codon at residue 755. Three out of 10 linked markers tested were informative for this family and sin

Chimeric analogs derived from pairs of homologous proteins routinely exhibit activities found in one or both parents. We describe chimeras of two glycoprotein hormones, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and human follitropin (hFSH), that exhibit activity unique to a third family member, human thyrotropin (hTSH). The results show that biological activity can be separated from hormone-specific amino acid residues. This is consistent with a model for the evolution of homologous ligand-receptor pairs involving gene duplication and the creation of inhibitory determinants that restrict binding. Dis

The diagnosis of Hb SS/GPhiladelphia disease was made in four young Nigerians from separate families. Their Hb electrophoretic patterns on cellulose acetate membrane at alkaline pH were similar to those obtained in sickle-cell haemoglobin C (HbSC) disease, but their clinical features and haematological data were consistent with the diagnosis of homozygous sickle-cell disease. Family studies also revealed that they had inherited an additional alpha-chain mutant haemoglobin. In one of the families, fingerprints of the globin peptides and amino acid analysis confirmed that the mutant haemoglobin

Synapse formation underlies the organization of neurons into functional circuits and requires precise alignment and coordinated maturation of pre- and postsynaptic compartments. Many synaptogenic adhesion molecules have been identified that drive target recognition and sustained adhesion between appropriate synaptic partners. Yet the degree to which individual molecules serve distinct functions in synapse formation and maturation remains poorly understood. In particular, how exquisite nanoalignment of pre- and postsynaptic specializations flows from micron-scale adhesive interactions between s

BACKGROUND: Systematic studies on the association between men's sexual dysfunction (low sexual desire, ejaculation disorders, erectile dysfunctions, genital ulcers, testicular disorders, prostate cancer or sexually transmitted infections) and marital conflict are emerging. However, the coping strategies adopted by wives in such circumstances are not commonly reported in the literature. Male sexual functioning is vital to the marital relationship, lack of it can result in intolerable cohabitation or relationship breakdown, and could also cause infertility, infidelity, and arouse stigma in Niger

Relationships with spouses, family, and friends influence health, yet their effects are often assessed separately. Relationship quality fluctuates over time, and while some couples effectively navigate these ups and downs, others may experience stress and strain. Guided by dyadic stress and support frameworks, we examined how positive and negative spousal, friend, and family ties contribute to subjective health within and across the first 16 years of marriage. We took a within-person approach to examine how ties beyond couples' marriages protect or wear on health, particularly in the years wit

BACKGROUND: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by decreased bone mass and increased bone fragility. Despite increasing research on the biomedical aspects of the disease, only a few studies focus on the psychosocial implications of living with OI. This study aimed to explore the situations that are perceived by OI type-1 children, their parents and siblings, as being the most distressing and stressful in their experience with the disease.
METHODS: Seven families of children diagnosed with OI type 1 for longer than four years participated. An in-depth semistru

Previous research indicates that children in homeless families have a high risk of physical and mental illness. This study reports the initial stage of a longitudinal research programme to measure the prevalence of psychiatric disorders among parents and children in homeless families. A sample of parents in 113 homeless families were interviewed within 2 weeks of admission to seven homeless centres in the City of Birmingham, and compared with a sample of 29 low-income families who were not homeless. Both sets of interviews used the Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL), the Communication Domain of

Based on personal experience and the results of a survey among 78 families, the author analyses the psychological, social and economical consequences of severe mental retardation for the parents of the sick child. The most important consequences are psychological and socio-economic: guilt feelings, social isolation and risk of parental separation. The disclosure of the child's handicap yields to various reactions: psychological shock at first, then denial of the handicap, depression, followed in some parents with acceptance and fear for the future of their child after their own death.

The chondrodysplasia with congenital joint dislocations, CHST3 type, which was distinguished by predominantly contractures, marked vertebral changes, and normal facial appearance. Although, some clinical clues can be used for differential diagnosis, it is mostly too difficult to discriminate one type from another on basis of clinical findings only. Eight patients with multiple dislocations from five unrelated families were included in this study to elucidate molecular diagnoses. Clinical exome sequencing (CES) was performed on one patient from each family. Variable degree vertebral changes, pe

Families are invested in an older adolescent gradually separating from the family to live independently as an adult, but for many families, adolescent psychopathology makes this transition difficult. Addressing such psychopathology is critical in preventing "failure to launch," a breakdown in gaining age-appropriate independence from parents. This case study illustrates a promising approach directed at helping an 18-year-old female with agoraphobia and panic disorder who, upon intake, was at risk for long-lasting, prohibitive dependence on her parents. The clinical approach entails the converg

BACKGROUND: Heavy episodic drinking is widespread among adolescents, with serious health risks, including abuse / dependence in adulthood. The aim of this paper is to analyze the influence of negative mood states and some family variables on this type of drinking behavior among Catalan adolescents.
METHODS: Cross sectional study of a representative sample of adolescents (age 14-18 years) from Catalonia (Second Wave, Panel of Families and Children) (2006-2010). Separate logistic regression models are run for women (n = 1,459) and men (n = 1,105) to assess whether negative mood states (self-per

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are one of only three groups at high risk for colorectal cancer (CRC), a leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Yet, no research has examined psychological effects of their high-risk status. The present study offered an initial investigation of three potential predictors of patient distress: disease duration, family history of cancer, and perceived social support. Longer disease duration and stronger family history of cancer are associated with elevated CRC risk in this already high-risk population. Perceived support was conceptualized as a re

The primary health care setting has been established as a key venue for identifying and working with depression. Despite this, and the high risk of depression experienced by women in the postnatal period, maternal depression has been little examined in the work of health visitors. Furthermore, although research has been undertaken on social factors related to depression in the general population, there is nothing specifically on the population of health visitor clients. This study focuses on social and demographic factors related to maternal depression amongst users of health visitor services.

Inherited pheochromocytomas are often part of familial syndromes, especially multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2), retinal cerebellar hemangioblastomatosis [von Hippel-Lindau (vHL) disease] or neurofibromatosis type 1. It is not clear whether isolated familial pheochromocytoma exists as a separate clinical entity. In a family with pheochromocytomas in three generations and with at least seven affected members, we investigated by clinical and genetic analyses the presence or absence of associated conditions. The clinical investigations included ophthalmological and radiological studies f
