The effect of the YK lens in keratoconus.

PURPOSE: To report the clinical results of the use of the YK contact lens (Lucid Co., Seoul, Korea) for keratoconus. METHODS: One hundred and twenty nine keratoconic eyes were fitted with a YK lens which has one base curve and three peripheral curves. A light feather touch fluorescein pattern was obtained based on topographic indices. Visual acuity, comfort, mean wearing time, and ocular tissue changes were evaluated. Mean follow up was 17.5 +/- 13.8 months (range 6-75). RESULTS: One hundred and twenty six (97.6%) eyes tolerated the contact lenses. A total of 94.5% of the eyes achieved a vis

Retrospective Study of Inclusion Body Hepatitis Diagnostic Cases in Chickens in California; 2015-2024.

From 2015 to 2024, inclusion body hepatitis (IBH) was diagnosed in a total of 346 chicken necropsy cases submitted to the California Animal Health and Food Safety (CAHFS) laboratory system. The majority of cases (68%; 237/346) originated from a single commercial broiler company with a high density of poultry premises within the California Central Valley region. Reported mortality varied between 0.5% and 4.8% per day, and morbidity ranged between 5% and 10%. Clinical signs observed in affected flocks included depression, reluctance to move, ruffled feathers, greenish diarrhea, and, occasionally…

The mandibles and tarsal claws allow lice to cling firmly to their host's feathers. Phylogenetic analyses help unravel the paraphyletic nature of the genus Degeeriella and demonstrate the clear differentiation between lice parasitizing Accipitriformes and Falconiformes, as well as the close relationship between D. punctifer, D. fu …

Biomagnification and trophic transfer of total mercury and methylmercury in a sub-tropical montane forest food web, southwest China.

Little is known about the bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) via food webs in terrestrial ecosystems, especially in subtropical forest ecosystems. In the present study, THg and MeHg were determined as well as the carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope composition in samples of soils, plants, invertebrates, and songbird feathers to construct food webs in a remote subtropical montane forest in Mt. Ailao, southwest China and assess the bioaccumulation, biomagnification, and trophic transfer of Hg. Results showed that the trophic levels (TLs) of…

Establishment of Rat Models of Different Pathological Types of Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis Using Pigeon Droppings.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis and pulmonary histopathological characteristics of hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) are not yet fully understood. Therefore, we established animal models of HP of different stages, aiming to provide support for research on this disease. METHODS: We established rat models of pigeon breeder's lung of different pathological types by creating freeze-dried allergen powder from fresh pigeon feathers, dander, and other droppings. Freeze-dried allergen powder suspensions of pigeon droppings were used to establish 2 rat models of HP, one by aerosol inhalation and one by a…

Molecular confirmation of Trichomonas gallinae and other parabasalids from Brazil using the 5.8S and ITS-1 rRNA regions.

Clinical, gross, and histopathology lesions and molecular characterization of Trichomonas spp. infection were described in two striped owls (Asio (Rhinoptynx) clamator), one American kestrel (Falco sparverius), two green-winged saltators (Saltator similis), and in a toco toucan (Ramphastos toco) from Brazil. These birds presented clinical signs including emaciation, ruffled feathers, abundant salivation and open mouth breathing presumably due to abundant caseous material. Gross lesions were characterized by multifocal yellow friable plaques on the surface of the tongue, pharynx and/or caseous …

Conserved features and evolutionary shifts of the EDA signaling pathway involved in vertebrate skin appendage development.

It is widely accepted that evolutionary changes in conserved developmental signaling pathways play an important role in morphological evolution. However, few in silico studies were interested in tracking such changes in a signaling pathway. The Ectodysplasin (EDA) pathway provides an opportunity to fill this gap because it is involved in vertebrate skin appendage development such as scales, teeth, hair, and feathers that take an obvious part in the adaptation of species to their environment. We benefited from the large amount of genomic data now available to explore the evolution of the upstre…

[Lung function in workers in a chicken slaughterhouse in the city of Maracaibo, Venezuela].

In order to evaluate the respiratory health status in workers exposed to antigenic substances (chicken feathers, serum and dropping), typical of usual practice in the avian slaughter-house, pulmonary function was studied on 49 exposed workers, and in a sample of 49 people with similar anthropometric characteristics, non exposed to these substances, by means of occupational-medical history, spirometric tests, hematologic and biochemical tests, and postero-anterior chest x-rays. The values for the spirometric parameters varied with sex, age, weight, size, smoking habits, length of employment and…

Scratch and sniff. The dynamic duo.

Are odors diagnostic? In this age of polymerase chain reactions, in situ hybridization, and immunohistochemical staining, is there any room left for the nose in diagnosing disease? Long ago, and perhaps far away, smell was crucial to describing an illness. Infectious diseases were known by their characteristics odors--scrofula as smelling like stale beer; typhoid, like freshly baked brown bread; rubella, like plucked feathers; and diphtheria, as "sweetish." Anosmics might be banned from medical school. Perhaps we have left the descriptions behind along with these illnesses we rarely encounter …

Anatomy and Immunohistochemistry of Woodpecker Tail Muscles.

Woodpeckers (Order Piciformes) belong to a group of birds characterized by their hammering capabilities in which the bill is utilized as a tool to probe for food and to excavate nest cavities. They have numerous specializations for this behavior, including their bill and tongue, feet for gripping vertical tree trunks, and tail feathers with thickened shafts to provide stability as a postural appendage. We hypothesized that (1) woodpecker tail musculature is also modified for clinging behaviors with a heterogeneous distribution of fast and slow muscle fibers, and that (2) the tree-trunk foragin…

Airborne dust and bioaerosols in Canadian conventional and alternative houses for laying hens.

Awareness about laying hen welfare has led to the phase-out of conventional battery cages in favor of the adoption of alternative housing systems for egg production in many countries. However, the greater freedom of movement for animals and the presence of manure and litter (sawdust, straw, feathers, etc.) on the floor in some alternative housing systems may be suitable conditions for dusts, bacteria, and fungi to be aerosolized, raising concerns about indoor air quality and respiratory health of workers. The present project aimed at assessing and comparing indoor air quality and bioaerosols i…

Sea ice concentration decline in an important Adélie penguin molt area.

Unlike in many polar regions, the spatial extent and duration of the sea ice season have increased in the Ross Sea sector of the Southern Ocean during the satellite era. Simultaneously, populations of Adélie penguins, a sea ice obligate, have been stable or increasing in the region. Relationships between Adélie penguin population growth and sea ice concentration (SIC) are complex, with sea ice driving different, sometimes contrasting, demographic patterns. Adélie penguins undergo a complete molt annually, replacing all their feathers while fasting shortly after the breeding season. Unlike most…
