Drunkorexia - knowledge review.

Eating disorders are often accompanied by a lack of ability to manage emotions. Drunkorexia is a phenomenon that occurs mainly among a group of students. This disorder is characterized by significant dietary restrictions and excessive physical activity in order to be able to consume more alcohol without fear of weight gain. It is attributed to peers pressure, the popularisation of a slim figure and the desire to increase the state of intoxication. Women are more likely to report experiencing drunkorexia along with other eating disorders. Like any eating disorder, drunkorexia can lead to seriou

Ruminal pH and its relationship with dry matter intake, growth rate, and feed conversion ratio in commercial Australian feedlot cattle fed for 148 days.

OBJECTIVES: Measurement of ruminal pH throughout a 148-day feeding period in cattle fed commercial diets and to relate this to feed intake, growth rate and feed conversion ratio. Factors contributing to variation in rumen pH, including meal frequency, duration and weight, and, total daily intake, were also evaluated. METHODS: Forty-eight cattle were randomly allocated to two pens and 12 randomly selected from each pen had rumen pH monitoring boli inserted. Ruminal pH was measured every 10 min and feed intake was measured continually. The cattle were fed a commercial feedlot diet for 148 days

#EatingDisorderRecovery: a qualitative content analysis of eating disorder recovery-related posts on Instagram.

PURPOSE: Limited research has evaluated the role of Social Networking Sites (SNS) in eating disorder (ED) recovery. While research has demonstrated the deleterious effects of pro-ED SNS content, less is known regarding SNS content documenting ED recovery. This study evaluates orientation towards help-seeking, ongoing ED warning signs and recovery themes on ED recovery SNS hashtags. METHODS: 600 Instagram posts were retrieved from two popular hashtags: #EDrecovery and #EatingDisorderRecovery. They were categorized into four thematic concerns: Food, Quotes, People or Others. Posts were analysed

Intuitive Eating Scale-2: psychometric properties and clinical norms among individuals seeking treatment for an eating disorder in private practice.

PURPOSE: Intuitive Eating (IE) is an approach to eating designed to facilitate a positive relationship with food. Its use in clinical settings and in the community is rapidly growing in popularity. The Intuitive Eating Scale 2 (IES-2) is a widely used measure that indexes intuitive eating motivations and behaviour, however evidence of its validity in populations with clinical eating disorders remains scarce. The objective of the proposed study was thus to evaluate the factor structure of the IES-2 in a large sample of individuals seeking treatment for eating disorders in private practice. MET

The Western diet: a blind spot of eating disorder research?-a narrative review and recommendations for treatment and research.

Over the last 50 years, in parallel with the obesity epidemic, the prevalence of eating disorders has increased and presentations have changed. In this narrative review, we consider recent research exploring the implications of changing patterns of food consumption on metabolic and neurobiological pathways, a hitherto neglected area in eating disorder research. One of the major changes over this time has been the introduction of ultra-processed (NOVA-4) foods, which are gradually replacing unprocessed and minimally processed foods. This has resulted in the increased intake of various sugars an

Know the Flow: Milk Flow Rates From Bottle Nipples Used in the Hospital and After Discharge.

BACKGROUND: Milk flow rate may play an important role in an infant's ability to safely and efficiently coordinate sucking, swallowing, and breathing during feeding. PURPOSE: To test milk flow rates from bottle nipples used in the hospital and after discharge. METHODS: Bottle nipples used in hospitals (10 unique types) and available nationwide at major retailers (15 unique types) were identified. For each of the 25 nipple types, 15 nipples of that type were tested by measuring the amount of infant formula extracted in 1 minute by a breast pump. Mean milk flow rate (mL/min) and coefficient of

[Malnutrition due to an extremely 'Работает' diet; a new eating disorder?].

A 71-year-old male was admitted to our hospital with heart failure, cachexia and biochemical disturbances due to a diet consisting of exclusively vegetables, oil and water. Our investigations showed that this diet was a consequence of an excessive preoccupation with health. The patient did not meet criteria for an eating disorder or other DSM-IV psychiatric disorder. We conclude that malnutrition due to health fad diets may be an underestimated medical problem. There is no specific psychopathological disorder that covers this behaviour, and there is no knowledge of its epidemiology. Popular li

Systematic review with meta-analysis: early infant feeding and coeliac disease--update 2015.

BACKGROUND: New evidence emerged on early feeding practices and the risk of coeliac disease. AIM: To systematically update evidence on these practices to find out whether there is a need to revise current recommendations. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library were searched from July 2012 (end of last search) to February 2015 for studies of any design that assessed the effect of gluten consumption and breastfeeding on the development of coeliac disease and/or coeliac disease-related autoimmunity. RESULTS: We identified 21 publications, including two, new, large, randomised contro

[What you need to know about eating and drinking behavior in school-aged children].

"Eating and drinking" are key elements in and for the life of our children. They supply the child with sufficient energy and essential nutrients, they constitute the basis for an optimal growth and they initiate a good life style with sufficient physical activity, pleasure and other sensory inputs. This article provides important information on the optimal combination of food groups and presents recommendations regarding daily routine of children and families using the food pyramid and the nutrition disc of the Swiss society of nutrition. A short discussion covers the subjects of problematic e

Ant navigation: priming of visual route memories.

Ants travelling to and fro between their nest and a foraging area may follow stereotyped foodward and homeward routes that are guided by different visual and directional memory sequences. Honeybees are known to fly a feeder-to-hive or hive-to-feeder vector according to whether or not they have recently fed--their feeding state controls which compass direction they select. We show here that the feeding state of the wood ant Formica rufa also determines the choice between an outward or inward journey, but by priming the selective retrieval of visual landmark memories.

[Binge eating disorder (BED)--new diagnostic category].

Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is a proposed new diagnostic criteria in the DSM-IV, cited as an example of an eating disorder Not Otherwise Specified (NOS). The phrase Binge Eating was introduced over 35 years ago to describe problematic behavior found in a subgroup of overweight individuals, and as a subgroup of Bulimia Nervosa. The defining characteristics of BED patients are consumptions of an objectively large amount of food in discrete time periods, a lack of control during eating episodes and a lack of compensatory behavior binge. BEDs affect approximately 30% of obese individuals seeking t

Therapeutic teat use for babies who breastfeed poorly.

Much has been written about suck confusion due to a baby's oral experience with objects other than the breast--but how much difference is there in the relative impacts on a baby's ineffective suck if a teat is used instead of other currently accepted techniques such as cup and finger feeding? Mothers who seek the help of a lactation consultant will commonly already be using bottles and teats as part of their management regime for a difficult situation. Especially if the problems are well developed and complex, many mothers will not be able to accept unfamiliar alternatives such as cup and fing

Gross morphology of the alimentary canal and seasonal variation in feeding of Noemacheilus montanus (McClelland).

Noemacheilus montanus (McClelland) is a bottom feeder Omnivorous fish of Garhwal hillstreams. The alimentary canal is short and the stomach consists of a corpus and a pylorus portion. As it consumes more animal food than the vegetable food, it may be better called Carni-omnivore. The study of GSI for different months revealed that the feeding intensity attains 2 peaks during a year, first in December and second in June. The change in feeding intensity may be correlated with the availability of food items in nature.

Silage intake, rumination and pseudo-rumination activity in sheep studied by radiography and jaw movement recordings.

1. The eating and ruminating activity of four rams given long-chopped silage ad lib. in two daily meals was studied by jaw movement recordings. The events of rumination and pseudo-rumination were observed by fluoroscopy and by cineradiography. 2. The rate of eating was highest at the beginning of the main meal and then declined gradually. 3. The silage intake level was low. 4. The swallowed silage did not accumulate at the cardiac region but was forced into the dorsal sac of the rumen by the contractions of the reticulum and cranial sac of the rumen. For regurgitation the solid particles had t

Changes of behavioral parameters during long-term food restriction in middle-aged Wistar rats.

Food restriction (FR) has a beneficial effect on aging process and exerts a significant effect on the responses of rodents to standard behavioral tasks. The aim of this study was to assess the cumulative influence of FR on the behavioral and biochemical parameters in Wistar rats. Six-month-old rats were subjected to restrictive feeding (50% of the daily food intake, every-other-day feeding regimen) for one month or for six months until ages of 7 and 12months, respectively. We examined the habituation of exploratory movement, amphetamine (AMPH)-induced motor activity, as well as changes in seru

Field evaluation of capsaicin as a rodent aversion agent for poultry feed.

Developing additional techniques for reducing animal feed contamination by rodents and controlling rodent populations is critical to efforts aimed at reducing the occurrence of Salmonella spp infection on poultry farms. Capsaicin, a compound found in chili peppers of the genus Capsicum, produces a burning sensation in the mouth of mammals and is used effectively as an animal deterrent for some pest species. Applied to poultry feed, capsaicin may be effective as an aversive agent to deter rodent feeding and enhance acceptability of rodenticide baits. We tested capsaicin-treated poultry diets (2

Stress induced hyperphagia in C. elegans as a genetic model for binge eating disorders.

Binge eating (BE) is often triggered by stress, dieting, and adverse environmental factors, and represents a common precursor to eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, and BE disorder. Stress-induced hyperphagia captures core features of binge-like feeding and shares neurobiological substrates will BE disorder, making it a useful behavioral readout for dissecting underlying mechanisms. We used the genetically tractable worm Caenorhabditis elegans to examine how starvation and stress interact to drive feeding, quantifying pharyngeal pumping as a measure of food intake. Combined starvation

Phylogenetic and individual variation in gastropod central pattern generators.

Gastropod molluscs provide a unique opportunity to explore the neural basis of rhythmic behaviors because of the accessibility of their nervous systems and the number of species that have been examined. Detailed comparisons of the central pattern generators (CPGs) underlying rhythmic feeding and swimming behaviors highlight the presence and effects of variation in neural circuits both across and within species. The feeding motor pattern of the snail, Lymnaea, is stereotyped, whereas the feeding motor pattern in the sea hare, Aplysia, is variable. However, the Aplysia motor pattern is regulariz
