Association of bone mineral density with nine urinary personal care and consumer product chemicals and metabolites: A national-representative, population-based study.

Personal care and consumer products are extensively used and contain various chemicals that are recognized as endocrine disrupting chemicals. Few epidemiological studies measured the associations of these chemicals and metabolites, especially phenols, with bone health. We measured the associations between nine urinary phenol biomarkers and BMD and the subsequent prevalence of osteopenia/osteoporosis. National representative data from US adults aged over 20 years who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2005 to 2010 were used. 2,267 men, 1,145 premenopausal

[Histology of the cystic area of the ischemic femoral head in the adult].

16 ischemic femoral heads from human adult were studied with radiologically and histologically. The two heads from fresh fracture of femoral neck of 1 month looked grossly normal; radiograms and CT showed no abnormality though necrosis surrounded by living bone tissue without cystic formation was found on the top area histologically. The pathology including the 12 collapsed heads from old neck fracture and 2 osteoarthritic heads were similar but varied in degree and extent of mineralization with time. Numerous cysts, were walled off by a layer of osteosclerosis on the necks side. While dense f

Functional and Radiological Outcomes of Ipsilateral Femoral Neck and Shaft Fractures Treated with Proximal Femoral Nail Antirotation-2.

BACKGROUND: Ipsilateral femoral neck and shaft fractures present a unique challenge due to their complex biomechanics and the need for optimal implant selection. Traditional dual-implant fixation has been widely used, but a single implant approach, such as the Proximal Femoral Nail Antirotation-2 (PFNA2), offers potential advantages, including reduced surgical time, minimized blood loss, and lower implant-related complications. However, the stability provided by PFNA2 and its impact on early functional recovery remain areas of ongoing investigation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective stu

Femoral neck strain prediction during level walking using a combined musculoskeletal and finite element model approach.

Recently, coupled musculoskeletal-finite element modelling approaches have emerged as a way to investigate femoral neck loading during various daily activities. Combining personalised gait data with finite element models will not only allow us to study changes in motion/movement, but also their effects on critical internal structures, such as the femur. However, previous studies have been hampered by the small sample size and the lack of fully personalised data in order to construct the coupled model. Therefore, the aim of this study was to build a pipeline for a fully personalised multiscale

Intramedullary Nail Breakage and Mechanical Displacement in Patients with Proximal Femoral Fractures: A Commercial and Medicare Supplemental Claims Database Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the rates and patterns of intramedullary nail (IMN) breakage and mechanical displacement for proximal femur fractures and the factors associated with their occurrence. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with subtrochanteric, intertrochanteric, or basicervical femoral neck fractures treated with IMN from 2016 to 2019 were identified from commercial and Medicare supplemental claims databases and were followed for up to two years. Kaplan-Meier analysis estimated the cumulative incidence of and patterns of breakage/mechanical displacement. Multivariable Cox regression

Associations between bone mineral density in different measurement locations and coronary artery disease: a cross-sectional study.

UNLABELLED: The bone mineral density (BMD) loss is closely related to coronary heart disease (CAD). The BMD measured at different locations differ in BMD values, the risk to CAD, and the capability to identify CAD. An average BMD of the right and left femoral neck being below - 1.70 has the ability to indicate risk of CAD. PURPOSE: Previous studies have reported that low bone mineral density (BMD) is closely related to coronary artery disease (CAD); however, it is not clear that the BMD loss at which location to what extent has the greatest effect in identifying risk of CAD. This study aimed

The effects of cyclical etidronate on early postmenopausal bone loss: an open, randomized controlled study.

Cyclical etidronate is well established in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis, but there are less data on its effects on bone loss in the early menopause. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of cyclical etidronate therapy on bone loss in the lumbar spine and proximal femur in early menopausal women. Seventy-seven women aged over 40 yr who had ceased menstruating 6-36 mo prior to enrollment into the study were recruited into an open, randomized controlled study of cyclical etidronate therapy. Bone mineral density in the lumbar spine and proximal femur was assessed by

Primary Intraosseous Paraganglioma of the Femoral Neck: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

CASE: An 88-year-old woman presented with worsening right hip pain over 2 years. Radiographs were unremarkable, but magnetic resonance imaging identified a femoral neck lesion. A computed tomography-guided biopsy revealed a zellballen pattern of cells positive for chromogranin and synaptophysin. Further workup, including a metaiodobenzylguanidine scan confirmed focal uptake at the right femoral neck. After multidisciplinary discussion, and shared decision-making with the patient, conservative management was chosen. CONCLUSION: Primary intraosseous paragangliomas are rare, with this case repre

Changes in the femoral osteotomy level coefficient and neck shaft angle during limb lengthening with an intramedullary magnetic nail.

BACKGROUND: The intramedullary magnetic IM nail enables bone graduated distraction. Proximal femur osteotomies for ante grade IM lengthening nails have a tendency towards varus-procurvatum malalignment. We examined the effect of the level of the osteotomy and of trochanteric versus piriformis entry points on the neck shaft angle (NSA) during lengthening with the PRECICE IM magnetic nail. METHODS: A novel parameter, the osteotomy level coefficient (OLC), was introduced as a guide to determine the level of an osteotomy at the proximal femur. The OLC was defined as the ratio between the distance

Quantitative 3D analysis of bone in hip osteoarthritis using clinical computed tomography.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between proximal femoral cortical bone thickness and radiological hip osteoarthritis using quantitative 3D analysis of clinical computed tomography (CT) data. METHODS: Image analysis was performed on clinical CT imaging data from 203 female volunteers with a technique called cortical bone mapping (CBM). Colour thickness maps were created for each proximal femur. Statistical parametric mapping was performed to identify statistically significant differences in cortical bone thickness that corresponded with the severity of radiological hip osteoarthritis. Ke

Relative osteopenia after femoral implant removal in children and adolescents.

Radiographic osteopenia is regularly observed after implant removal from a fracture or femoral osteotomy but has not been objectively quantified. Hardware removal is generally performed months to years after the index event (fracture or osteotomy) when full activity has been resumed. Objectively demonstrable bone mineral deficiency affects fracture risk. Hardware removal may facilitate the return to normal bone mineral density. Children who had dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scans following femoral implant removal were retrospectively reviewed to assess the percent of change in bone mineral

Revision surgery in a middle-aged patient with pertrochanteric fracture nonunion due to wedge effect caused by cephalomedullary nail: A case report.

Trochanteric femur fractures have traditionally been treated surgically with compression hip screws or cephalomedullary nails. With the increasing use of cephalomedullary nails, potential complications from this technique have surfaced. One of them is the potential for varus malreduction of trochanteric femur fractures, known as the "wedge effect", which is the distraction of fracture fragments generated during reamer and nail passage resulting in varus malalignment at the neck-shaft angle. Although trochanteric nonunion in the non-elderly is exceedingly rare, we experienced one such case afte

Pathological and hemodynamic study in a new model of femoral head necrosis following traumatic dislocation.

The blood of the femoral head is thought to be supplied by vessels originating from the medial and lateral circumflex femoral arteries and via the marrow cavity of the neck. Therefore, it is difficult to induce osteonecrosis of the femoral head when the marrow cavity of the neck is preserved. In the present study, we established a new model of femoral head necrosis by dislocating the hip joint and ligating the medial and lateral circumflex femoral arteries and veins. Measurement of femoral head blood flow revealed that a marked decrease to 14.7% of the control value was achieved by both hip di
