Degradation of the Selected Antibiotic in an Aqueous Solution by the Fenton Process: Kinetics, Products and Ecotoxicity.

Sulfonamides used in veterinary medicine can be degraded via the Fenton processes. In the premise, the process should also remove the antimicrobial activity of wastewater containing antibiotics. The kinetics of sulfathiazole degradation and identification of the degradation products were investigated in the experiments. In addition, their toxicity against Vibrio fischeri, the MARA® assay, and unselected microorganisms from a wastewater treatment plant and the river was evaluated. It was found that in the Fenton process, the sulfathiazole degradation was described by the following kinetic equat

Metagenomics illuminated the mechanism of enhanced nitrogen removal and vivianite recovery induced by zero-valent iron in partial-denitrification/anammox process.

In this study, a novel strategy of zero-valent iron (ZVI) combined with acetic acid was proposed to optimize partial-denitrification/anammox (PD/A) process, and enhanced nitrogen removal mechanism was elucidated through metagenomics. Results showed that the optimal nitrogen and phosphorus removal were as high as 99.50% and 98.37%, respectively, with vivianite being precipitated as the main byproduct. The occurrence of Feammox was a crucial link for enhanced ammonia removal and vivianite recovery. Metagenomic analysis further certified that long-term acclimation of optimization strategy trigger

Study on the effect of Cr(VI) removal by stimulating indigenous microorganisms using molasses.

Molasses have a prominent effect on the bioremediation of Cr(VI) contaminated groundwater. However, its reaction mechanism is not detailed. In this paper, the removal of Cr(VI) with different carbon sources was compared to explore the effect and mechanism of the molasses. The addition of molasses can completely remove 25 mg/L Cr(VI), while the removal efficiency by glucose or emulsified vegetable oil was only 20%. Molasses could rapidly stimulate the reduction of Cr(VI) by indigenous microorganisms and weakened the toxicity on bacteria. The average removal rate of Cr(VI) was 0.42 mg/L·h, 10 ti

Supplementation with Sucrosomial® iron leads to favourable changes in the intestinal microbiome when compared to ferrous sulfate in mice.

Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies worldwide and is often treated with oral iron supplements. However, commonly used supplements, including those based on ferrous iron salts, are associated with gastrointestinal side effects and unfavorable changes in the intestinal microbiome. Sucrosomial® iron is a novel iron formulation that is effective at treating iron deficiency, and with fewer gastrointestinal side effects, yet its effect on the gut microbiome has not been examined previously. Thus, we treated mice for two weeks with diets containing either Sucrosomial® i

An iron-air fuel cell system towards concurrent phosphorus removal and resource recovery in the form of vivianite and energy generation in wastewater treatment: A sustainable technology regarding phosphorus.

Phosphorous (P) recovery from industrial wastewaters solves both P deficiency and P pollution problems. A sequencing batch iron-air fuel cell was set up to recover P from synthetic wastewater containing 0.6 g-P/L Na2HPO4. In the cell, ferrous iron goes into the liquor from iron-anode to precipitate soluble P and form vivianite. Electrons travel from iron-anode to air-cathode through external circuit thus to generate energy. During 3 months' continuous operation, the P removal efficiency stably achieved at around 97.6%, and the average output voltage of cell was 404 mV. After long time operatio

Fractional iron absorption from enteric-coated ferrous sulphate tablet.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Iron supplementation is widely used public health measure to manage iron deficiency anaemia. In India, enteric-coated iron tablets are administered to adolescent boys and girls to avoid adverse effects such as gastritis, which reduces compliance, but this may result in poor iron absorption. Data on the absorption of iron from enteric-coated ferrous sulphate tablets are lacking. The present study using stable isotopic approach was aimed to measure iron absorption in iron deficient women. METHODS: Iron absorption was measured from stable isotope-labelled enteric-coated

Facile synthesis of Cu-CuFe2O4 nanozymes for sensitive assay of H2O2 and GSH.

Artificial enzymes have drawn substantial research interest from the scientific community due to their advantages over natural enzymes. However, majority of artificial enzymes exhibit low affinity towards H2O2, which means that a high H2O2 concentration is needed for the oxidation of a substrate such as 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue-colored oxTMB. With this concern, Cu-CuFe2O4 was facilely synthesized, wherein, Cu0 accelerates the redox capacity of Cu-CuFe2O4 as well as the electron transfer between CuFe2O4 and H2O2. These materials induce excellent activity as a peroxidase. Cu-

Mercapto propyltrimethoxysilane- and ferrous sulfate-modified nano-silica for immobilization of lead and cadmium as well as arsenic in heavy metal-contaminated soil.

Nano-silica as an important part of soil is an ideal carrier of passivator material. In this paper, nano-silica was modified by silane coupling agent containing mercapto group and iron (II) salt to afford an organic-inorganic hybrid containing -S-Fe-S functional group (coded as RNS-SFe) on the surface of nano-silica. Results demonstrate that the RNS-SFe nanoparticle has network-like spheroidal shape and a primary particle size is about 18.0 nm. The RNS-SFe hybrid as a potential immobilization agent for heavy metal in soil shows excellent performance for the remediation of the contaminated soil

Effects of biochars combined with ferrous sulfate and pig manure on the bioavailability of Cd and potential phytotoxicity for wheat in an alkaline contaminated soil.

Reducing the content of Cd in wheat grains is necessary for human health, especially in alkaline farmland in northern China where a large area of soils is heavily polluted with Cd. A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of wheat straw biochar (WB) and maize straw biochar (MB) combined solely with ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) or combined with FeSO4 and pig manure (PFWB and PFMB) on Cd bioavailability in soil and the phytotoxicity of Cd in wheat in an alkaline contaminated soil. The results showed that the application of these treatments decreased the concentrations of CaCl2-extr

In situ prepared algae-supported iron sulfide to remove hexavalent chromium.

The effects of algae on the removal of contaminant by iron sulfide (FeS) are still unknown. Chlorella vulgaris (CV), a remarkable algal specie, was used to prepare the CV-supported FeS (CV-FeS) and to investigate the role that CV plays in the removal of a heavy metal (i.e., hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) by FeS. The stabilized effect from algal extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) enhanced the reactivity of FeS due to the decrease of FeS aggregation, thus increasing Cr(VI) removal rate from 0.21 min-1 to 0.79 min-1. Furthermore, the strong buffering induced by the algal functional groups coul

Ischemic gastritis due to oral iron.

Polypharmacy is a frequent phenomenon. For that reason, drugs side effects are increasing, including lesions in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Multiple drugs can induce damage to the GI mucosa. NSAIDs are the most characteristic, however there are other drugs, that can cause a harmful effect in the digestive tract, such as iron. We present the case of a 91-year-old man with hematemesis due to iron intake.

Contrasted tolerance of Agrostis capillaris metallicolous and non-metallicolous ecotypes in the context of a mining technosol amended by biochar, compost and iron sulfate.

Metal(loid) contamination of soil, resulting from the mining activities, is a major issue worldwide, due to its negative effects on the environment and health. Therefore, these contaminated soils need to be remediated. One realistic method is the assisted phytostabilization, which aims at establishing a vegetation cover on the soil that will reduce metal(loid) bioavailability and spreading through the prevention of wind erosion and water leaching. In addition, amendments are applied to improve soil conditions and ameliorate plant growth. In this goal, biochar and compost showed good results in

Phosphorous in the environment: characteristics with distribution and effects, removal mechanisms, treatment technologies, and factors affecting recovery as minerals in natural and engineered systems.

Phosphorus (P), an essential element for living cells, is present in different soluble and adsorbed chemical forms found in soil, sediment, and water. Most species are generally immobile and easily adsorbed onto soil particles. However, P is a major concern owing to its serious environmental effects (e.g., eutrophication, scale formation) when found in excess in natural or engineered environments. Commercial chemicals, fertilizers, sewage effluent, animal manure, and agricultural waste are the major sources of P pollution. But there is limited P resources worldwide. Therefore, the fate, effect

Sensitive Detection of Serum Creatinine Based on β-Cyclodextrin-Ferrocenylmethanol Modified Screen-printed Electrode.

Ferrocenylmethanol (Fc-OH) is included in β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) to form the β-CD-Fc-OH complex by host-guest supramolecular interaction. β-CD dissociates from the β-CD-Fc-OH complex due to the conversion of Fc-OH to Fc+-OH under a stimulus of oxidant. In our study, Fc-OH is oxidized after a series of enzymatic reactions of creatinine, which blocks the other means for oxidation of Fc-OH. And the background noise is reduced for testing for serum creatinine (sCr). The chronoamperometry signal for creatinine (with a constant potential -0.3 V vs. Ag/AgCl) increases linearly in the 1 - 1000 μM range

The role of natural Fe(II)-bearing minerals in chemoautotrophic chromium (VI) bio-reduction in groundwater.

To date, comparatively little is known about the role of natural Fe(II)-bearing minerals in bioremediation of chromium (VI) contaminated aquifers subject to chemoautotrophic conditions. This work employed four kinds of Fe(II)-bearing minerals (pyrite, mackinawite, wustite, and magnetite) as inorganic electron donors to support Cr(VI) bio-reduction. In batch experiments, mackinawite (FeS) performed best, with Cr(VI) removal efficiency of 98.1 ± 1.21 % in 96 h. Continuous column experiments lasting 180 d implied that groundwater chemistry and hydrodynamics influenced the Cr(VI) removal process.

Cu, Pb and Fe release from sulfide-containing tailings in seawater: Results from laboratory simulation of submarine tailings disposal.

Metal release from the deposition of sulfide-containing tailings in seawater was investigated using a batch reaction experiment inside a temperature and dissolved oxygen-controlled chamber. Two hundred grams of tailings from a porphyry Cu-Au and a sediment-hosted Cu deposit were submerged in 1.8 L synthetic seawater. The sulfides present in the porphyry Cu-Au tailings are pyrite (FeS2), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) and bornite (Cu5FeS4) while in the sediment-hosted Cu tailings are bornite, chalcocite (Cu2S) and covellite (CuS). Galena occurs as a minor sulfide in both tailings. Pore water and overlyi

Uranium speciation in coal bottom ash investigated via X-ray absorption fine structure and X-ray photoelectron spectra.

Similar to chromium contamination, the environmental contamination caused by uranium in radioactive coal bottom ash (CBA) is primarily dependent on the chemical speciation of uranium. However, the relationship between uranium speciation and environmental contamination has not been adequately studied. To determine the relationship between uranium speciation and environmental contamination, X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) analyses were performed to determine the uranium speciation in CBA exposed to different chemical environments and simulated natural

Remediation of hexavalent chromium spiked soil by using synthesized iron sulfide particles.

Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) stabilized microscale iron sulfide (FeS) particles were synthesized and applied to remediate hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) spiked soil. The effects of parameters including dosage of FeS particles, soil moisture, and natural organic matter (NOM) in soil were investigated with comparison to iron sulfate (FeSO4). The results show that the stabilized FeS particles can reduce Cr(VI) and immobilize Cr in soil quickly and efficiently. The soil moisture ranging from 40% to 70% and NOM in soil had no significant effects on Cr(VI) remediation by FeS particles. When molar rat

Enhanced reductive dechlorination of tetrachloroethene by nano-sized mackinawite with cyanocobalamin in a highly alkaline condition.

In this study, we characterize the reductive dechlorination of tetrachloroethene (PCE) by nano-sized mackinawite (nFeS) with cobalamin (Cbl(III)) at a high pH and investigate the effects of environmental factors, including the concentrations of the target contaminant, reductant, and catalyst and suspension ions on the dechlorination kinetics of PCE. Ninety five percent of the PCE was degraded by nFeS with Cbl(III) in 15 h. Cyclic voltammetry conducted with regard to the reductive dechlorination showed a higher redox potential of mackinawite under a high-pH condition (-1.01 V), suggesting that
