Supramolecular solvents based on deep eutectic solvents and hexafluorobutanol for the extraction of aristolochic acids from natural plants.

In this study, a new liquid phase microextraction method was developed by combining micelle-mediated extraction of aristolochic acids (AAs) in traditional Chinese medicines with polyfluorinated alcohol solutions, and subsequent preconcentration via deep eutectic solvent (DES)-induced supramolecular solvent (SUPRAS) formation. The preparation of SUPRASs with polyfluorinated alcohols functioning as amphiphiles and the DESs acting as coacervation agents is demonstrated for the first time. Different polyfluorinated alcohols and DESs were examined for the extraction and preconcentration of AAs. The

Advanced nitrogen removal from secondary effluent using the SAD/A process under the toxicity of PFOA.

In response to increasingly stringent wastewater discharge standards, the need for advanced nitrogen removal from secondary effluent has become urgent. The sulfur autotrophic denitrification (SAD) coupled with anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) process (SAD/A), holds significant promise for this application due to its advantage of requiring no external organic carbon. However, its resilience to emerging contaminants, such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which may persist in secondary effluent, remains unknown. This study investigated the long-term impact of perfluorooctanoic

Contrast-Enhanced Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (cFAST) Far Forward: Contrast Visualization Methods Testing of Six Field-Portable and Handheld Ultrasound Systems.

INTRODUCTION: The focused assessment with sonography in trauma (FAST) is the most important ultrasound exam in the operational environment, yet its sensitivity for diagnosis of solid organ injury is limited. Contrast-enhanced FAST (cFAST) augments the diagnostic power of the FAST exam of parenchymal and vascular injuries, and it rivals CT. Studies on cFAST have not used handheld ultrasound systems found in the combat environment. METHODS: As part of a methodsdesign process for a cFAST study, the authors tested six hand-held and portable ultrasound systems for their ability to visualize contra

Impact of GenX on Zea mays: Alterations in Morphology and Physiological Performance.

Hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA or GenX) is a highly mobile perfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) increasingly detected in the environment, yet its impact on major crops remains poorly understood. For this reason, hydroponically grown Zea mays was exposed to 10, 100, and 1000 μg L-1 of GenX for 7 days to couple bioaccumulation and physiological performance. This compound accumulated in both roots and leaves, reaching 4.5 μg g-1 DW at 1000 μg L-1, thereby demonstrating its toxic potential. Low doses stimulated lateral root proliferation and root surface area, whereas the highest GenX le

From Porphyrins to Versatile Photostable Bacteriochlorins: Triplet-State-Driven Design of Perfluorinated Photosensitizers.

Perfluorinated tetrapyrrolic photosensitizers offer a promising platform for photodynamic therapy, yet establishing clear relationships between molecular structure, excited-state behavior, and therapeutic efficacy remains a major challenge. We report a systematic study of porphyrin and bacteriochlorin derivatives designed to elucidate how structural modifications govern photophysical properties and biological performance. Comprehensive spectroscopic analyses, including measurements of triplet-state lifetimes in both solution and micellar formulations, revealed that metalation and macrocycle re

Aqueous PFOS exposure decouples gaseous carbon loss from mineral-associated carbon retention in controlled wetland-interface mesocosms.

Wetland interfaces regulate greenhouse-gas exchange and carbon retention, yet contaminant exposure may disrupt the relationship between these two processes. Whether aqueous perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), a persistent aquatic contaminant, alters this relationship remains unclear. Here, we used a controlled rhizobox mesocosm with paired planted and unplanted treatments across an aqueous PFOS gradient (0, 10, 100, and 1000 μg L-1) to resolve plant-mediated and background soil responses. We combined endpoint, time-weighted 24-h CO2 and CH4 flux partitioning with 13CO2 tracing of root-derived ca

Lufenuron Dual-Carrier Nanoformulation: Controlled Release and Systemic Translocation viaβ-Cyclodextrin Octadecanoate and Urea-Formaldehyde Resin.

Through dual encapsulation of the insecticide lufenuron with β-cyclodextrin octadecanoate and urea-formaldehyde resin, a lufenuron@β-cyclodextrin octadecanoate/urea formaldehyde resin (LF@β-CDs/UF) nanoformulation was prepared. This dual-carrier synergy significantly prolonged the release cycle of lufenuron and enhanced environmental adaptability. Results demonstrated that under 25 °C and pH 7 conditions, its release cycle reached 324 h in 20% methanol-water, representing a 1.5-fold prolongation compared to the single-carrier lufenuron@β-cyclodextrin octadecanoate (LF@β-CDs) nanoformulation, w

From algorithm to verification: based on network toxicology and machine learning, the immunomodulatory role of IGFBP1/MKI67/C9 in perfluorooctanoic acid-induced osteoarthritis was discovered, and a diagnostic model was constructed.

BACKGROUND: Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a widespread persistent environmental contaminant, has been associated with osteoarthritis (OA) onset and progression, though mechanisms remain unclear. This study elucidates PFOA's influence on OA pathogenesis, evaluates its effects on disease progression, and identifies diagnostic biomarkers. METHOD: Obtain PFOA and OA-related gene expression data from public databases, integrate GSE114007 and GSE89408, and perform batch correction. Differentially expressed genes were identified via limma for GO and KEGG enrichment. Six machine learning algorithms

Mechanisms of Retinal Displacement After PFCL-Assisted Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment Repair: Insights From a Computational Model.

PURPOSE: To investigate the mechanical forces exerted by perfluorocarbon liquid (PFCL) during pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) using a computational model of retinal dynamics. METHODS: A continuous load was applied to the retina by simulating PFCL infusion into the vitreous cavity at a constant fill rate for varying PFCL densities. Using this loading condition, the model computed the corresponding movement of subretinal fluid (SRF) and the resulting retinal displacement throughout the reattachment process. RESULTS: In our model, the PFCL pushes the SRF

Sex-dependent relationships between PFAS and placental transcriptomics identified by weighted gene co-expression analysis.

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are environmental toxicants associated with adverse neonatal outcomes. The exact mechanisms by which PFAS impairs neonatal health are undefined, but the placenta is a likely target. OBJECTIVE: We applied a systems biology approach to identify placental RNA co-expression modules (gene sets) associated with PFAS exposure and birth weight. METHODS: Placental tissue samples (n = 147) from the GLOWING study underwent RNA-sequencing, and PFAS concentrations were quantified using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. We constructed a

Investigation of the pancreatic toxicological effects of oral ingestion of perfluorobutanesulfonic acid (PFBS) in Sprague-Dawley rats.

PFBS (perfluorobutanesulfonic acid) are surfactants in several household products, including drinking water. Exposure to drinking water contaminated with Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAs) has been associated with diabetes, hyperglycemia, and/or insulin resistance. The immune system is particularly vulnerable to toxicant exposures, with certain environmental chemicals, such as PFAS, potentially causing immunotoxicity. This study aims to assess PFBS exposure and inflammatory-related effects in the pancreas. Three groups of male Sprague Dawley rats ingested 0 ppm, 50 ppm and 100 ppm of PFBS-diet f

Effects of Perfluorobutane Sulfonate (PFBS) on Female Reproduction, Pregnancy, and Birth Outcomes.

IMPORTANCE: Perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) is a short-chain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) that has emerged as a significant public health concern due to its widespread environmental contamination and persistent nature. While PFBS is considered to have a shorter half-life in the environment and human body compared to other PFAS compounds, there are still growing concerns about its potential impacts on human health, particularly on female reproduction and birth outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This literature review critically examines the impact of PFBS exposure on female reproductive health

Systemic toxicity induced by topical application of the sulfonic acids, perfluorobutane sulfonic acid (PFBS) and perfluoropentane sulfonic acid (PFPeS), in a murine model.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large group of synthetic surfactants incorporated into products for their chemical and physical properties. Studies have associated PFAS with adverse health effects. Although there is a high potential for dermal exposure, toxicity studies related to this route of exposure are lacking. The present study evaluated the systemic toxicity following a sub-chronic 28-day dermal exposure to perfluorobutane sulfonic acid (PFBS) (1.25-5 %) or perfluoropentane sulfonic acid (PFPeS) (1.25-5 %) in a murine model. Elevated levels of both PFAS were detected in

Enhanced antifouling performance of ultra-thin antimicrobial peptide membrane through chemical-crosslinking layer-by-layer assembly.

Biofouling and microbial penetration are still the important issues for surface water purification during gravity-driven microfiltration process, where biofouling has the tendency to deteriorate microbial rejection efficiency. Herein, ultra-thin antimicrobial layer composed of ε-poly-l-Lysine (EPL) and tannic acid (TA) biomacromolecules was successfully chemically crosslinked onto polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane via covalent bond-involved layer-by-layer (LbL) method. As-prepared PVDF@EPL membrane could kill bacteria through the contact sterilization effect of AMP. Besides, PVDF@EPL mem

Determinants of plasma poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances during pregnancy: The Japan Environment and Children's Study.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a group of compounds associated with adverse health outcomes, have been identified widely in humans. This study investigated the determinants of PFAS in plasma collected from pregnant women enrolled in the Japan Environment and Children's Study from 2011 to 2014. Several machine learning approaches were used, and the XGBoost model had the best predictive performance for seven PFAS quantified in more than 50 % of the population (from R2 = 0.34 and RMSE = 0.39 ng/mL for perfluorononanoic acid to R2 = 0.85 and RMSE = 0.19 ng/mL for perfluoroundecanoic a

Decarbonising Respiratory Care: The Impact of a Low-Carbon Salbutamol Pressurised Metered-Dose Inhalers.

BACKGROUND: Rapid reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are vital to combat climate change. Healthcare systems contribute ~5% of global GHG emissions, with pressurised metered-dose inhalers (pMDIs) a significant contributor owing to their hydrofluorocarbon propellants. This study compared GHG emissions of a salbutamol pMDI using a low-carbon propellant in clinical development, hydrofluoroalkane (HFA)-152a, against current salbutamol inhalers. METHODS: Three 'cradle-to-grave' lifecycle analyses compared GHG emissions of salbutamol pMDIs with HFA-152a and HFA-134a, and salbutamol dry-pow

Copper-Based Two-Dimensional Conductive Metal-Organic Framework Thin Films for Ultrasensitive Detection of Perfluoroalkyls in Drinking Water.

Perfluoroalkyls (PFAS) continue to emerge as a global health threat making their effective detection and capture extremely important. Though metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have stood out as a promising class of porous materials for sensing PFAS, detection limits remain insufficient and a fundamental understanding of detection mechanisms warrants further investigation. Here, we show the use of a 2D conductive MOF film based on copper hexahydroxy triphenylene (Cu-HHTP) to fabricate chemiresistive sensing devices for detecting PFAS in drinking water. We further show ultrasensitive detection usin
