Reduction and stabilization of lumbar and thoracolumbar spine fractures with Louis' plates and internal fixator: a comparative study.

In this retrospective study, 28 patients who presented isolated fractures from T11 to L4 were surgically treated using a posterior approach. The fractures were reduced and stabilized in half of the cases with Louis' plates and in the other half with an internal fixator. Twelve patients had partial neurological deficits on admission. They were reviewed after a mean period of 24 months from time of injury, and 10 months after implant removal. The kyphosis of the fractured vertebral body was measured, and showed a mean value of 18 degrees before surgery and 10.3 degrees at the last visit. The reg

Open reduction and internal fixation of displaced, comminuted intra-articular fractures of the distal end of the radius.

The results in sixteen patients who had a displaced, comminuted intra-articular fracture of the distal end of the radius and who were treated by open reduction and internal fixation were retrospectively reviewed. At a mean follow-up of 4.8 years, 81 per cent of the patients had a rating of good or excellent by the scoring system of Gartland and Werley, but only 56 per cent had such a rating when the modified scoring system of Green and O'Brien was used. All of the fractures healed at an average of nine weeks. A step-off of two millimeters or more in the distal radial articular surface at the t

Comparison of Temporary External Fixation and Open Reduction with Internal Fixation for the Management of Pilon Fractures: A Short-Term Outcome Prospective Clinical Trial.

OBJECTIVES: Pilon fractures are among the difficult injuries to treat in orthopedic surgery. We aim to evaluate the feasibility, advantages, and disadvantages of temporary external fixation for pilon fractures and compare its outcomes with cases managed with internal fixation and primary open reduction. METHODS: In a prospective trial, 30 patients were divided into two cohorts: a two-stage cohort with external fixation and secondary ORIF (15 patients) and a one-stage primary ORIF cohort (15 patients). We compared the two cohorts' rates of infection (deep or superficial infection), non-union,

Comparison of clinical and radiographic outcomes of arthroscopic-assisted percutaneous fixation versus open reduction internal fixation of lateral tibial plateau fractures.

PURPOSE: Treatment for tibial plateau fractures continues to evolve but maintains primary objectives of anatomic reduction of the joint line and a rapid recovery course. Arthroscopic-assisted percutaneous fixation (AAPF) has been introduced as an alternative to traditional open reduction internal fixation (ORIF). The purpose of the study is to compare clinical and radiographic outcomes in patients with low-energy Schatzker type I-III tibial plateau fractures treated with AAPF versus ORIF. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed at a level 1 trauma centre to compare outcomes of 120

Modern External Ring Fixation Versus Internal Fixation for Treatment of Severe Open Tibial Fractures: A Randomized Clinical Trial (FIXIT Study).

BACKGROUND: Modern external ring fixation has been hypothesized to reduce complications requiring hospital readmission compared with internal fixation when treating patients with high-energy open tibial shaft fractures. In this study, the 1-year probability of a major limb complication was compared between external and internal fixation of severe open tibial fractures. METHODS: This multicenter randomized clinical trial included patients 18 to 64 years of age with severe open tibial shaft fractures randomly assigned to either modern external ring fixation (n = 127) or internal fixation (n = 1

A prospective randomised controlled trial of the fibular nail versus standard open reduction and internal fixation for fixation of ankle fractures in elderly patients.

AIMS: The fundamental concept of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of ankle fractures has not changed appreciably since the 1960s and, whilst widely used, is associated with complications including wound dehiscence and infection, prominent hardware and failure. Closed reduction and intramedullary fixation (CRIF) using a fibular nail, wires or screws is biomechanically stronger, requires minimal incisions, and has low-profile hardware. We hypothesised that fibular nailing in the elderly would have similar functional outcomes to standard fixation, with a reduced rate of wound and hardw

Intramedullary nail fixation versus open reduction and internal fixation for treatment of adult diaphyseal forearm fractures: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Diaphyseal radius and ulna fractures require surgical fixation in adults. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) have been considered the gold standard of treatment. The recent development of an interlocking intramedullary nail (IMN) has provided an alternative treatment method for these fractures. The objective of this meta-analysis is to compare the outcomes and complications of IMN versus ORIF for diaphyseal forearm fractures in adults. METHODS: MEDLINE and Embase were searched from January 1, 2000, through January 7, 2024. All English-language studies were included compar
