Fractures are an important entity to consider in pediatric patients. There are certain diseases in which bones fracture with a minimal trauma. Pycnodysostosis is an autosomal recessive unusual type of cráneo metaphyseal dysplasia, that presents frequently as fracture in a pathological bone. A 9 year old caucasian female, diagnosed with pycnodysostosis, was admitted with a right femur fracture as a result of a low energy trauma. Radiographic studies showed bilateral femur fractures, proximal fracture and non-union in antecurvatum of the left tibia. Pycnodysostosis is a rare disease, generally d

The technique of retrograde intramedullary fixation of fractures through open traumatic amputations has not been previously described. We performed a retrospective case series at a tertiary-care military hospital setting. Ten patients met inclusion criteria. All were male, and all were injured through improvised explosive device. Outcome measures included the incidence of fracture nonunion, osteomyelitis or acute infection, heterotopic ossification (HO), as well as successful prosthesis fitting and ambulation. Average time to fixation after injury and amputation closure was 11.7 and 12.2 days,

To investigate role of delayed operation to stimulate growth of strong external callus in high-energy fractures, and explore a new way for bone healing. Twenty adult dogs were employed, and randomly divided into four groups, including group A-D. The dogs underwent osteotomy by wire saw in middle of femur, electric coagulation damaged surrounding periosteum, forming a 1 cm defect. Group A were internal fixed 14 days after osteotomy (higher-energy fractures delayed operation), Group B and C were internal fixed immediately (no delayed operation), Group D were internal fixed 14 days after osteotom

BACKGROUND: Posterior wall fracture is the most common acetabular fracture. Comminuted fractures with an impacted segment represent a subtype of this injury. The subchondral bone of the articular zone is compressed and causes a bone defect. The impacted fragment should be isolated, mobilized, and then reduced. A bone graft should be used to fill the gap. The other fragments are fixed following the reduction of the impacted segment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten patients with comminuted fractures and impacted segments with bone defects were enrolled in our study, from January 2010 to July 2012. A

UNLABELLED: In emerging countries, nonunion in the shaft of fractured long bones is common.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a 3-year long prospective study, 50 patients (38 men, 12 women) with an average age of 40.9 years (range 17-60) were treated for neglected diaphyseal nonunion an average of 11 months (range 6-48) after the fracture event. The femur was involved 14 times, tibia 22 times, humerus eight times and forearm bones six times. All of these patients had consulted initially with a traditional bone setter at the time of fracture. The surgical procedure consisted of osteoperiosteal decortic

OBJECTIVES: It is recommended that pediatric nasal bone fractures be treated earlier than in adults, within 3-7 days of the injury. This study was aimed at evaluating if delayed treatment could affect surgical outcomes of pediatric nasal bone fractures.
METHODS: Pediatric patients (≤17 years) with nasal bone fractures, who underwent corrective surgery between 2003 and 2011, were reviewed. Patients who underwent previous septo/rhinoplasty, or who had a previous nasal fractures and combined facial bone fracture, were excluded. A telephone survey was conducted, and clinical data and results from

The objective of the present study was to estimate the effectiveness of ultrasound diagnostics of nasal bone fractures, compare it with the results of clinical examination, X-ray and CT imaging of nasal bones. The data of the analysis of clinical symptoms and instrumental studies are compared with those of X-ray and ultrasound investigations of intact and fractured bones including the cases of persistent post-traumatic deformation of the nose. It is concluded that the ultrasonic study of nasal bones is a more accurate method for diagnostics of their fractures compared with X-ray examination (p

BACKGROUND: Loss of bone mineral mass, muscle atrophy, and functional limitations are predictable consequences of immobilization and subsequent weight-bearing restriction due to leg or ankle fractures. The aim of this study was to prospectively determine whether decreased bone mineral mass following lower-limb fractures recovers at follow-up durations of six and eighteen months in adolescents.
METHODS: In the present study, we included fifty adolescents who underwent cast immobilization for a leg or ankle fracture. Dual x-ray absorptiometry scans of four different sites (total hip, femoral ne

Fracture is one of the pathological signs most frequently encountered in archaeologically obtained bones. To expand the paleopathological knowledge on traumatic injuries, it is desirable to secure data on long bone fractures from as wide a geographic and temporal range as possible. We present, for the first time, evidence of long bone fractures in a 16th-18th century Joseon skeletal series (n=96). In this study, we found 3 Colles' fractures of the radius in 2 individual cases. The pattern of fractures was unique. Although previous reports show that the ulna is broken more often than the radius

The clinical manifestation of oncogenic osteomalacia includes bone pain, pathological fractures, general fatigue and muscle weakness. Such unspecific symptoms hinder the establishment of a proper diagnosis which very often requires long-lasting investigations with many diagnostic imaging methods. Here, we discuss difficulties in the diagnosis of oncogenic osteomalacia using the example of our own clinical case: a 56 year-old woman with a history of pain in the left hip and two years of walking difficulties. A plain radiograph and CT scan revealed pathological fractures. Multiple myeloma, prima

BACKGROUND: Bone fractures are common in alcoholics.
AIMS: To analyse which factors (ethanol consumption; liver function impairment; bone densitometry; hormone changes; nutritional status, and disrupted social links and altered eating habits) are related to bone fractures in 90 alcoholic men admitted to our hospitalization unit because of organic problems.
METHODS: Bone homoeostasis-related hormones were measured in patients and age- and sex-matched controls. Whole-body densitometry was performed by a Hologic QDR-2000 (Waltham, MA, USA) densitometer, recording bone mineral density (BMD) and

BACKGROUND: In people, specific classifications of temporal bone fractures are associated with clinical signs and prognosis. In horses, similar classifications have not been evaluated and might be useful establishing prognosis or understanding pathogenesis of certain types of trauma.
HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized associations between temporal bone fracture location and orientation in horses detected during computed tomography (CT) and frequency of facial nerve (CN7) deficit, vestibulocochlear nerve (CN8) deficit, or temporohyoid osteoarthropathy (THO). Complex temporal region anatomy

BACKGROUND: The role of osteoporosis and osteopenia in the etiology of fractures of the distal part of the radius is well established, but any link between osteoporosis and the severity of the distal radial fracture has not been extensively investigated. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the degree of osteoporosis and the severity of distal radial fractures.
METHODS: All patients over fifty-five years of age with a low-energy distal radial fracture were offered dual x-ray absorptiometry scanning of the hip. Data on the 137 consecutive patients were collected pro

The authors present the case of an infant girl with severe generalized weakness, multiple bone fractures, and heart defect. She needed mechanical ventilation from birth. Radiographs showed mid-diaphyseal fractures of both humeri and of the right femur as well as generalized osteopenia. Electroneuromyography showed spontaneous fibrillations at rest with no active movements. Motor response to a stimulus could not be registered. A systolic heart murmur was detected, and echocardiography showed a large atrial septal defect and an additional membrane in the left atrium. DNA analysis confirmed the d
