[Reorganization of the corticospinal tract and thalamocortical projections in children with sequelae of severe traumatic brain injury].

OBJECTIVE: To associate the clinical recovery of locomotor function with the functional and structural viability of corticospinal and thalamocortical projections in children in the intermediate and long-term periods after severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 11 children (7 in the intermediate and 4 in the long-term periods of severe TBI). Clinical status was assessed based on muscle strength and tone testing in the distal parts of the hands (using the Muscle Strength Scale and the Modified Ashworth Spasticity Scale) and the classification system for l

Effects of Oral Contraceptive Pills on Brain Networks: A Conceptual Replication and Extension.

Neuroimaging studies have reported that oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) alter brain connectivity, but findings have varied widely and are often derived from observational designs. Here, we used a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover design to test for conceptual replication of three prior studies and to explore broader network-level effects of OCPs. Replication analyses largely did not confirm previously reported seed-based connectivity changes in edges containing amygdala, putamen, or dorsal anterior cingulate nodes (ps > 0.05). In the absence of a clear replication, we purs

Inflammation-mediated regional brain alterations associated with mild cognitive impairment in knee osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVES: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA), a degenerative joint disease marked by chronic pain, is associated with systemic inflammation that may extend to neurocognitive dysfunction. While chronic low-grade inflammation in KOA has been implicated in mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a prodromal stage of dementia, the mediating role of inflammation in brain functional reorganization remains unclear. METHODS: This study integrated neuroimaging, inflammatory biomarkers, and machine learning to investigate inflammation-mediated brain functional alterations in 63 KOA patients with/without MCI. Serum l

Markers of limbic system damage following SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Alterations of the limbic system may be present in the chronic phase of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Our aim was to study the long-term impact of this disease on limbic system-related behaviour and its associated brain functional connectivity, according to the severity of respiratory symptoms in the acute phase. To this end, we investigated the multimodal emotion recognition abilities of 105 patients from the Geneva COVID-COG Cohort 223 days on average after SARS-CoV-2 infection (diagnosed between March 2020 and May 2021), dividing them into three groups (severe, moderate or mild) according to respir

Disrupted Time-Dependent and Functional Connectivity Brain Network in Alzheimer's Disease: A Resting-State fMRI Study Based on Visibility Graph.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease with insidious onset, which is difficult to be reversed and cured. Therefore, discovering more precise biological information from neuroimaging biomarkers is crucial for accurate and automatic detection of AD. METHODS: We innovatively used a Visibility Graph (VG) to construct the time-dependent brain networks as well as functional connectivity network to investigate the underlying dynamics of AD brain based on functional magnetic resonance imaging. There were 32 AD patients and 29 Normal Controls (NCs) from the Al

Individual Patterns of Abnormality in Resting-State Functional Connectivity Reveal Two Data-Driven PTSD Subgroups.

OBJECTIVE: A major challenge in understanding and treating posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is its clinical heterogeneity, which is likely determined by various neurobiological perturbations. This heterogeneity likely also reduces the effectiveness of standard group comparison approaches. The authors tested whether a statistical approach aimed at identifying individual-level neuroimaging abnormalities that are more prevalent in case subjects than in control subjects could reveal new clinically meaningful insights into the heterogeneity of PTSD. METHODS: Resting-state functional MRI data w

A comprehensive review for machine learning on neuroimaging in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common mental disease, which can exist as a separate disease or become one of the symptoms of other mental diseases. With the development of society, statistically, the incidence rate of obsessive-compulsive disorder has been increasing year by year. At present, in the diagnosis and treatment of OCD, The clinical performance of patients measured by scales is no longer the only quantitative indicator. Clinical workers and researchers are committed to using neuroimaging to explore the relationship between changes in patient neurological function and obses

Anorexia nervosa, neuroimaging research, and the contextual salience of food cues: The food approach-avoidance conundrum.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is characterized by an avoidance and marked apprehension around food intake, yet paradoxically, those with AN often display approach behaviors to food, engaging in food shopping or preparation activities which are described as rewarding. This approach-avoidance conundrum is of much importance as neuroimaging studies continue to probe mechanisms relating to core AN psychopathology. This Idea Worth Researching discusses the notion that neuroimaging studies relying on food cue presentation paradigms may be methodologically flawed without specifying the contextual salience of

Upper-Limb Amputation Disrupts the Interhemispheric Structural Rather than Functional Connectivity.

Background: Recent neuroimaging studies on upper-limb amputation have revealed the reorganization of bilateral sensorimotor cortex after sensory deprivation, underpinning the assumption of changes in the interhemispheric connections. In the present study, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), we aim to explore the alterations in the interhemispheric functional and structural connectivity after upper-limb amputation. Methods: Twenty-two upper-limb amputees and 15 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were recruited for MRI scanning. The amputees

Influence of feeding state on neurofunctional differences between individuals who are obese and normal weight: a meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies.

Obesity is a complex disorder associated with serious health risks. Examining differences in brain activity between normal weight and obese populations in response to food cues may help researchers and clinicians understand the underlying causes of overeating and obesity and help prevent them. Multiple neuroimaging studies have investigated weight differences in functional activity to food cues but have found varying results. We performed six meta-analyses of functional neuroimaging studies of weight differences in response to food images and isolated differences in processing between normal w…

Altered brain function and its spatial correlations with neurotransmitter maps in anterior shoulder pain patients.

Neuroimaging studies have reported that chronic pain may be associated with brain functional changes and related molecular mechanisms. However, there are few studies in anterior shoulder pain (ASP). Thus, we aimed to assess the possible brain functional changes and their associations with neurotransmitter receptor maps in ASP patients. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data were obtained from 27 ASP patients and 20 healthy controls (HCs). Regional homogeneity (ReHo) and fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) methods were used to examine altered brain functi

How should etiology change the classification of the epilepsies? Report from the ILAE 2021-2025 Terminology Commission.

The classification of the epilepsies has traditionally relied on clinical and electroencephalographic features. However, advancements in molecular genetics, neuroimaging, and our understanding of epilepsy pathophysiology necessitate a shift toward an etiology-based approach. Etiology-specific classification enables precision diagnosis and precision management by integrating genetic, structural, metabolic, infection, and immune-related insights. Genetic advances have identified more than 1000 epilepsy-related genes, revealing how variations in a single gene can produce diverse phenotypes and sy

Modeling Brain Dynamics in Brain Tumor Patients Using the Virtual Brain.

Presurgical planning for brain tumor resection aims at delineating eloquent tissue in the vicinity of the lesion to spare during surgery. To this end, noninvasive neuroimaging techniques such as functional MRI and diffusion-weighted imaging fiber tracking are currently employed. However, taking into account this information is often still insufficient, as the complex nonlinear dynamics of the brain impede straightforward prediction of functional outcome after surgical intervention. Large-scale brain network modeling carries the potential to bridge this gap by integrating neuroimaging data with

Classifying social anxiety disorder using multivoxel pattern analyses of brain function and structure.

Functional neuroimaging of social anxiety disorder (SAD) support altered neural activation to threat-provoking stimuli focally in the fear network, while structural differences are distributed over the temporal and frontal cortices as well as limbic structures. Previous neuroimaging studies have investigated the brain at the voxel level using mass-univariate methods which do not enable detection of more complex patterns of activity and structural alterations that may separate SAD from healthy individuals. Support vector machine (SVM) is a supervised machine learning method that capitalizes on …

Progressive Supranuclear Palsy: Clinical Features and Neuroimaging in a Case Series.

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a neurodegenerative disease with remarkable clinical diversity, lacks early and robust biomarkers to confirm the diagnosis in vivo. Given this, we analyzed magnetic resonance imaging studies in a series of patients admitted to a referral center after a comprehensive clinical examination. We had access to the complete clinical and radiologic data of 12 PSP patients. In all cases, initial symptoms included gait and speech abnormalities. A functional scale assessment was performed prior to visual assessment of neuroimaging studies and planimetric analysis. We

Illuminating posterior targets for TMS beyond the prefrontal cortex.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is rapidly developing as a therapeutic tool for multiple psychiatric disorders. All current FDA-cleared TMS indications for psychiatric illness target the frontal lobes. Historically, TMS target selection was based on reports of brain lesion locations that cause illness or functional neuroimaging correlates within the prefrontal cortex. In addition to prefrontal targets, however, these neuroimaging studies have also consistently implicated posterior brain regions in a variety of psychiatric disorders. To date, these posterior regions have rarely been tes…

MRI and Clinical Biomarkers Overlap between Glaucoma and Alzheimer's Disease.

Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness worldwide. It is classically associated with structural and functional changes in the optic nerve head and retinal nerve fiber layer, but the damage is not limited to the eye. The involvement of the central visual pathways and disruption of brain network organization have been reported using advanced neuroimaging techniques. The brain structural changes at the level of the areas implied in processing visual information could justify the discrepancy between signs and symptoms and underlie the analogy of this disease with neurodegenerative dementias, su
