Coastal rest during the COVID-19 pandemic enhances microbial community stability and metabolic potential in a subterranean estuary.

This study examines a subterranean estuary seepage face in China's Sanggou Bay by comparing environmental parameters and microbiome data before and after the COVID-19 lockdown, in order to reveal the regulatory mechanisms of coastal resting on microbial community stability and biogeochemical functions. The results revealed that reduced human activities significantly decreased sediment nutrient loading and shifted organic matter sources from terrestrial- to marine-dominated. This environmental restructuring drove profound microbial community reorganization: while α-diversity indices declined, t

An artificial neural network model reveals water level changes alter bioavailable PCB concentrations in the Detroit River.

Temporal trends of bioavailable PCB water concentrations from a long running mussel biomonitoring program (1998-2023) in the Detroit River, Ontario, Canada. Bioavailable sum PCB10 concentrations exhibited long term declines at two biomonitoring locations but such declines were influenced by changes in water levels and showed different responses among individual congeners. Temporal declines in PCBs were highest rising water levels, PCBs reverted to an increasing trend for all congeners at the upstream biomonitoring location. At the midstream location, only PCBs 28 + 31 and 52 changed their temp

Combatting pesticide pollution: using liquid scintillation spectrometry to assess 14C-labeled hexachlorobenzene removal by mangrove Bacillus spp.

This study explored the ability of two Bacillus species isolated from mangrove sediments to degrade hexachlorobenzene (HCB), a persistent organic pollutant that affects the quality of surface water, groundwater, and soil. Hence, we analyzed bacterial growth in a medium with hexachlorobenzene as the sole carbon source. Moreover, chemical oxygen demand removal, ecotoxicity, and measured radiolabeled HCB degradation were assessed. Our results revealed that both Bacillus strains (I3 and I6) demonstrated hexachlorobenzene-degrading potential and achieved degradation rates of 11.5 ± 1.47% and 21.1 ±

The environmentally relevant concentration of triclosan induces carbon dioxide emission in estuarine sediment associated with disrupted microbial metabolism.

Emerging contaminants in urban areas can accumulate in estuarine sediment through household and hospital wastewater discharge. During the pandemic, the use of disinfectants such as triclosan (TCS) increased, potentially leading to higher levels of these substances in the environment. This study aims to investigate the effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of TCS (0.01 and 1 mg kg-1 wt) on CO2 emissions, microbial community, and activities. We observed a significant increase in CO2 flux in sediment spiked with 0.01 and 1 mg kg-1 of TCS (3.78 and 4.02 mg h-1, respectively) compared

Comparing methods for optimising microplastic extraction in sediment through density separation.

Oceans constitute a significant sink of microplastics, mostly accumulating in sediment. Extracting MPs from sediment remains challenging, highlighting the need for a standardised methodology to allow comparison across studies. We compared the efficiency of commonly used solutions for density separation and two transferring methods. A CaCl2-saturated solution with decantation was the most efficient, recovering 90 ± 1 % of MPs regardless of polymer, size or shape, and proved safer, cheaper, and faster than the second-best alternative, ZnCl2 with decantation. High-density polymers were harder to

Reducing CH4 and CO2 emissions and improving water quality in rural waterlogging ponds by injecting CaO2 into surface sediments.

In order to solve the problems of water quality deterioration, black-odor phenomenon, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by hypoxia in rural waterlogging ponds, the experiment explored the improvements and mechanism of CaO2 under coverage and injection methods. The incubation test results indicated that CaO2 achieved the synchronous inhibition of the release of various nutrient pollutants from sediments and effectively improve the black-odor phenomenon by increasing DO and ORP, promoting sulfide oxidation, and enhancing the coupled biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal processes. Distribution and potential risks of antibiotics in inland lakes in China.

Antibiotics have been used extensively as important antimicrobials and growth promoters for decades. Owing to their incomplete absorption and metabolism by organisms, residual antibiotics are released into lakes and occur pseudopersistently in the environment. Systemically analyzing the environmental behavior of antibiotics in lakes at the national scale is crucial for regulating their production and consumption and governing them at the national level. In this study, antibiotic occurrence in the main inland lakes of China was investigated based on public data from in situ surveys in the last

Genome-resolved transcriptomics reveals novel PCE-dehalogenating bacteria from Aarhus Bay sediments.

Organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB) are keystone microbes in bioremediation of sites contaminated with organohalides and in natural halogen cycling. Known OHRB belong to distinct genera within the phyla Chloroflexota, Proteobacteria, and Firmicutes, whereas information about novel OHRB mediating natural halogen cycling remains scarce. In this study, we applied a genome-resolved transcriptomic approach to characterize the identity and activity of OHRB from tetrachloroethene respiring cultures previously enriched from sediments of Aarhus Bay. Combining short- and long-read sequencing approach

Sediment quality classification in freshwater lakes predicted by the history of treatment with copper-based aquatic algaecides.

Copper-based aquatic algaecides have been widely used in the management of aquatic macrophyte and harmful algal blooms for decades due to their effectiveness and low cost. However, repeated treatment of freshwater lakes results in the accumulation of copper in the sediment, which may adversely affect the ecosystem of the lakes through toxicity to benthic invertebrates and other organisms. Consequently, copper-based aquatic herbicides and algaecides have been frequently subjected to regulations aimed at preventing further ecological deterioration in treated waterbodies. Many states in the US ar

Study of mercury bioavailability using isotope dilution and BCR sequential extraction in the sediment of Yellow Sea and East China Sea, China.

Mercury (Hg) emitted from East Asian has increased the risk of Hg in China Marginal Seas for decades. However, the speciation of Hg (especially the bioavailable Hg) in these regions remains unclear. To address this problem, we analyzed total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in the sediment and porewater of Yellow sea (YS) and East China Sea (ECS) and determined the speciation of Hg using both improved BCR sequential extraction and isotope dilution (ID) techniques. Nearshore areas of YS and ECS exhibited higher THg levels in sediments and porewater, suggesting the significant contribution of t

Distribution of mercury and methylmercury in ice-water-sediments in lakes during the freezing period under the influence of ice cover.

The presence of lake ice cover alters the subglacial water environment, thereby influencing the migration and transformation of mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) within the ice-water-sediment media of lakes. This study investigated the occurrence characteristics of mercury and methylmercury in various environmental compartments within lakes located at high latitudes in cold regions during the freezing period. To this end, Wuliangsuhai Lake, the largest freshwater lake situated at 40°N in China, was selected as the study site. The contents of mercury and methylmercury in lake ice were deter

Optimization of the Determination of Methylmercury in Solid Matrix Samples.

Accurate quantification of neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) in environmental samples is crucial for exploring its formation, behaviors, and risks. Here, we developed and optimized an alkaline digestion-manual purge trap/gas chromatography-cold atomic fluorescence spectrometry (GC-CVAFS) method for the quantification of MeHg in solid matrix samples such as sediments, soils or sedimentary rocks. The alkaline digestion method yielded higher recoveries of MeHg than the acid extraction method. The manual purge trap/GC analysis enhanced the detection of MeHg by increasing the loading volume of the di
