An Update on the Interdisciplinary Dental Care Approach for Geriatric Diabetic Patients.

Diabetes mellitus is a prevalent health issue escalating worldwide that gives rise to numerous problems. Periodontal disorders are recognized as the sixth consequence associated with diabetes mellitus. Research shows that dental health affects overall health, and this knowledge is changing the dental field. The correct choice of glucose goal levels and the optimal selection of glucose-lowering medications are determined by a comprehensive geriatric assessment, an estimate of life expectancy, and a rationale for therapy at regular intervals in elderly diabetics. This article provides an overvie

Complex Presentation of a Dieulafoy Lesion in a Geriatric Patient with Multiple Comorbidities.

Dieulafoy lesions (DL) consist of tortuous, thick-walled submucosal arteries that protrude through a small mucosal defect, often surrounded by otherwise normal mucosa. They are commonly located in the proximal stomach, particularly along the lesser curvature and near the esophagogastric junction, typically within 5 cm. However, they can also occur in various other regions of the GI tract, including the esophagus, duodenum, and colon. We present the case of a 76-year-old female with a complex medical history who arrived at the ED with hematemesis and melena. Her condition rapidly deteriorated;

Inflammatory markers in geriatric anemia: A study from North India.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation has several effects in the geriatrics with reference to iron deficiency anemia (IDA), anemia of chronic disease (ACD), and unexplained anemia (UA). Whether hyperinflammation is part of their pathogenesis or just incidental is unknown. Data are limited regarding inflammatory patterns in IDA, ACD, and UA in anemic geriatrics and inflammation as a component of UA. There is little known about the overlap of inflammation between ACD and UA. OBJECTIVE: The study was undertaken to find the proportion of anemic geriatric patients, aged ≥60 years with raised serum levels of in…

The Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index predicts sarcopenia in patients with cirrhosis.

Patients with cirrhosis are at high risk for sarcopenia and malnutrition, which are associated with reduced quality of life and increased mortality. We investigated the relationship between the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) and sarcopenia/gait speed and assessed the usefulness of the GNRI for predicting sarcopenia in patients with cirrhosis. We evaluated 202 patients with cirrhosis and divided them into three groups based on baseline GNRI values: low (L)-GNRI (< 94.0, n = 49), intermediate (I)-GNRI (between 94.0 and 109.5, n = 103), and high (H)-GNRI groups (> 109.5, n = 50). Sarcope

Factors associated with clinical outcome in geriatric acute cholangitis patients.

BACKGROUND: Thromboelastography is a viscoelastic test with multiple potential advantages over conventional coagulation tests in various disease states. Thromboelastography rapidly provides qualitative and quantitative information related to a patient's coagulation status. OBJECTIVE: To describe recent studies of the use of thromboelastography in various clinical states and how thromboelastography is used in coagulation management. METHODS: A literature review using the MEDLINE and PubMed databases was conducted. The updated methodology for integrated reviews by Whittemore and Knafl was foll

Correlation of the Geriatric Assessment with Overall Survival in Older Patients with Cancer.

AIMS: Global guidelines recommend that all older patients with cancer receiving chemotherapy should undergo a geriatric assessment. However, utilisation of the geriatric assessment is often constrained by its time-intensive nature, which limits its adoption in settings with limited resources and high demand. There is a lack of evidence correlating the results of the geriatric assessment with survival from the Indian subcontinent. Therefore, the aims of the present study were to assess the impact of the geriatric assessment on survival in older Indian patients with cancer and to identify the fa

Venous, Arterial, and Neuropathic Leg Ulcers With Emphasis on the Geriatric Population.

Leg ulcers are a common and often serious problem in older adults. Underlying conditions that increase risk include age-related increases in chronic venous insufficiency, peripheral artery disease, connective tissue and autoimmune conditions, reduced mobility, and diabetes mellitus (DM). Geriatric patients have a higher risk of multiple wound-related complications including infection, cellulitis, ischemia, and gangrene, any of which may lead to further complications including amputation. The very presence of these lower extremity ulcers in the elderly negatively impacts their quality of life a

Impact of Early Physiotherapy Rehabilitation for Pleural Empyema in a Geriatric Patient.

Empyema is the accumulation of pus in the pleural cavity which can be linked to lung abscesses, trauma, septicemia, or spinal osteomyelitis. It is usually caused by a lung infection that extends to the pleural space and causes pus to accumulate. Here, we present the case of a 70-year-old male who complained of dry cough for 15 days, breathlessness on walking for 20 days, right-sided chest and upper back pain, and high-grade fever for 15 days. On investigation, pleural empyema was diagnosed. He underwent a thoracoscopy to drain the fluid and an intercostal drainage tube was inserted. Along with

What Is the Evidence in Treating Distal Radius Fractures in the Geriatric Population?

Distal radius fractures are common in the elderly population, second only to hip fractures in frequency. Historically, these injuries were treated almost exclusively without surgery, but an increase in operative management has occurred with development of volar locked plating in the early 2000s. Functional outcomes are similar between conservative and surgical treatment, but most studies assume low functional demands in older patients. Many elderly individuals today are active and independent. Decision-making in this higher-demand population is difficult. This article provides current evidence
