[Retrospective study of 23 arthrolyses of the elbow for post-traumatic stiffness: result predicting factors].

INTRODUCTION: The goal of the study was to determine the results of elbow arthrolysis for post-traumatic stiffness, and to identify factors … to the severity of the preoperative stiffness. We noticed that few patients were bothered in daily gestures, in spite of a relative stiffness. The type of injury did not seem to influence the final result. Elbow arthrolysis remains a mobilizing technique giving reliable long-lasting results. CONCLUSION: The range of motion obtained after arthrolysis perf …

[A national palliative care law in Spain: a matter of equity and public health].

Spain has made relevant progress in the planning, visibility and organisation of palliative care, but territorial inequalities, differences in access and still insufficient guarantees for patients and families persist. In this context, a national palliative care law should be understood not as an ideological gesture or a reactive response to other debates, but as a tool for equity, public health and cohesion within the National Health System. The World Health Organization considers the existence of a legal framework that guarantees access to and regulates palliative care to be an indicator of

Graphene Aerogel-Based Flexible Pressure Sensor for Physiological Signal Detection and Human-Machine Interaction.

Despite extensive development of flexible pressure sensors, it is still difficult for them to simultaneously achieve high precision and a large response to subtle pressures. To address these challenges, this work demonstrates a flexible pressure sensing platform that features the reduced graphene oxide aerogel sandwiched between a polydimethylsiloxane encapsulation layer and a thin polyimide film with interdigital electrodes. The resulting pressure sensor exhibits a high sensitivity of 698.96 kPa-1 and a low limit of detection (~ 1 Pa), and outstanding stability over 20,000 loading/unloading c

Music Listening Is an Action Verb: Phoronomy, Sound Tracking and Morphodynamic Transformation.

This article is a follow-up of a previous article where music was defined as matter or substance that flows. It argued for a rheological approach to music listening, conceiving of music as a virtual, motional object that evolves over time. The current article proceeds on similar lines by introducing the concept of phoronomy as the kinematic study of motion. It revolves about the way listeners can perceptually track sound by relying on motor imagery and ideomotor simulation, thus describing listening as an action verb by entailing active engagement with the sonic world. Listening, in that view,

Chimpanzees follow human pointing when attention is engaged.

Pointing is central to human communication and cooperative information sharing. By 12-14 months, infants understand adults' helpful communicative intentions when they point to the location of a hidden toy. In contrast, decades of ape pointing studies have yielded negative results, leading to the influential claim that chimpanzees do not understand cooperative communicative intentions. We test an alternative account proposing that limitations in attentional engagement, rather than socio-cognitive competence, constrain chimpanzees' performance in pointing tasks. Chimpanzees (N = 9) successfully

The "What" and "How" of Pantomime Actions.

Pantomimes are human actions that simulate ideas, objects, and events, commonly used in conversation, performance art, and gesture-based interfaces for computing and controlling robots. Yet, their underlying neurocognitive mechanisms are not well understood. In this review, we examine pantomimes through two parallel lines of research: (1) the two visual systems (TVS) framework for visually guided action, and (2) the neuropsychological literature on limb apraxia. Historically, the TVS framework has considered pantomime actions as expressions of conscious perceptual processing in the ventral str

Using Language Processing and Speech Analysis for the Identification of Psychosis and Other Disorders.

Increasingly, data-driven methods have been implemented to understand psychopathology. Language is the main source of information in psychiatry and represents "big data" at the level of the individual. Language and behavior are amenable to computational natural language processing (NLP) analytics, which may help operationalize the mental status examination. In this review, we highlight the application of NLP to schizophrenia and its risk states as an exemplar of its use, operationalizing tangential and concrete speech as reductions in semantic coherence and syntactic complexity, respectively.

Coupling relations underlying the production of speech articulator movements and their invariance to speech rate.

Since the seminal works of Bernstein (The coordination and regulation of movements. Pergamon Press, Oxford, 1967) several authors have supported the idea that, to produce a goal-oriented movement in general, and a movement of the organs responsible for the production of speech sounds in particular, individuals activate a set of coupling relations that coordinate the behavior of the elements of the motor system involved in the production of the target movement or sound. In order to characterize the configurations of the coupling relations underlying speech production articulator movements, we i

User-Centered Design of a Controller-Free Game for Hand Rehabilitation.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to develop and test a hand therapy game using the Microsoft (Redmond, WA) Kinect(®) sensor with a customized videogame. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using the Microsoft Kinect sensor as an input device, a customized game for hand rehabilitation was developed that required players to perform various gestures to accomplish a virtual cooking task. Over the course of two iterative sessions, 11 participants with different levels of wrist, hand, and finger injuries interacted with the game in a single session, and user perspectives and feedback were obtained via a…

The cognitive rehabilitation of limb apraxia in patients with stroke.

Apraxia is a higher level motor deficit that occurs when processing a goal-directed action. The apraxic deficit can manifest itself in absence of sensory input deficits or motor output deficits, neglect, frontal inertia or dementia. According to a clinical classification still largely in use, there are two main forms of limb apraxia: ideomotor (IMA) and ideational (IA), observed when a patient is required to imitate a gesture or use an object, respectively. In the present review, we examined only the cognitive treatments of both types of limb apraxia of a vascular aetiology. Despite the high p

Childhood apraxia of speech without intellectual deficit in a patient with cri du chat syndrome.

We report an 11-year-old girl for whom the diagnosis of cri du chat syndrome (CdCS) was made during a genetic investigation of childhood apraxia of speech. The patient presented with the classic chromosome 5 short arm deletion found in CdCS. The microdeletion, characterised using aCGH (array Comparative Genomic Hybridisation), was 12.85 Mb, overlapping the 5p15.2 and 5p15.3 critical regions. CdCS is typically associated with severe mental retardation while this patient had normal intellectual performance, confirmed by normal results from categorisation tasks. This mild phenotype was assessed u

Read my lips: asymmetries in the visual expression and perception of speech revealed through the McGurk effect.

It is well known that the right side of the mouth moves more than the left during speech, but little is known about how this asymmetry affects lipreading. We investigated asymmetries in the visual expression and perception of speech using the McGurk effect-an illusion in which incongruent lip movements cause listeners to misreport sounds. Thirty right-handed participants watched film clips in which the left, the right, or neither side of the mouth was covered. The McGurk effect was attenuated when the right side of the mouth was covered, demonstrating that this side is more important to liprea

Praxic skills in down and mentally retarded adults: evidence for multiple action routes.

Functional relationships between praxic performance and visual recognition ability of mentally retarded adults are discussed, in an attempt to integrate findings from developmental disorders of action with those described in the adult literature. Three groups of participants took part in the study: adults with Down's syndrome (D), Mentally Retarded adults (MR), and mental age-matched controls (C). Three experiments were conducted. A gesture production task (Experiment 1) aimed to test ability to demonstrate the object use under three different experimental conditions: first, participants could

Poisoning in childhood and adolescence: a study of 111 cases admitted to a military hospital.

One hundred eleven cases of poisoning (over a 4 1/2-year period) were retrospectively reviewed at a military medical center. Results of the review included the following: (1) two peak age ranges for poisoning were identified: the 1 1/2- to 4-year-old child who accidently ingests both drugs and non-drugs, and the female adolescent who ingests drugs as a suicide attempt or gesture; (2) hydrocarbons and aspirin were the most common agents ingested; however, if grouped, drugs with anticholinergic effects would replace aspirin as the second most common poison; (3) emergency treatment included emesi

Confidence-gated temporal voting for EMG-based prosthetic arm control: a low-cost end-to-end pipeline with quantified rejection behaviour.

BACKGROUND: Surface electromyography (sEMG) is the dominant non-invasive route to volitional prosthetic control, but a closed-world classifier issues a command for every input, including inputs corresponding to no trained gesture. This study evaluated a low-cost, three-gesture sEMG control pipeline combining a Random Forest classifier with rejection on the maximum Random-Forest class probability and temporal majority voting, and measured the resulting rejection behaviour rather than assuming it. METHODS: Three data sources were analysed: modelled synthetic sEMG; Ninapro DB5 (10 subjects, 16 c

Quantifying the visual salience of Swedish vowel contrasts: a computer vision approach.

Seeing a speaker's face can facilitate speech comprehension, but the magnitude of this effect depends on the visual salience of speech sounds. Visual salience has traditionally been defined through descriptions of speakers' articulatory gestures using discrete binary features. We examined which contrasts among Swedish long vowels are visually different and whether these align with traditional binary feature descriptions based on vowel openness and lip rounding. This proof-of-concept case study quantifies lip configurations in continuous speech to characterize the visual information available t…
