BACKGROUND: Primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in Asia, and no reliable, effective diagnostic, and predictive biomarkers are used in clinical routines. A growing body of evidence shows metabolic alterations in patients with glaucoma. We aimed to develop and validate potential metabolite biomarkers to diagnose and predict the visual field progression of PACG.
METHODS: Here, we used a five-phase (discovery phase, validation phase 1, validation phase 2, supplementary phase, and cohort phase) multicenter (EENT hospital, Shanghai Xuhui Central Hosp

Primary acute angle-closure glaucoma (PAACG) is a sight-threatening condition that can lead to blindness. With the increasing incidence of COVID-19, a multitude of people are experiencing acute vision loss and severe swelling of the eyes and head. These patients were then diagnosed with acute angle closure, with or without a history of PACG. However, the mechanism by which viral infection causes PACG has not been clarified. This is the first study to explore the specific inflammatory proteomic landscape in SARS-CoV-2-induced PAACG. The expression of 92 inflammation-related proteins in 19 aqueo

Senile glaucoma is a common ophthalmological disease in the elderly. It is a disease of visual papillary perfusion caused by elevated intraocular pressure, complicated by visual dysfunction. Glaucoma can cause serious damage to the normal vision of the elderly. Therefore, exploring the related molecular mechanisms of glaucoma is of great significance to the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma. This is an exploratory study. Establish a mouse model and conduct experimental groupings. After one week of adaptive feeding, the mice were intraperitoneally injected with an anesthetic mixture: ketamine

PRCIS: Combined phacoemulsification-goniosynechialysis (phaco-GSL) and unaugmented phacotrabeculectomy were both found to be effective in treating eyes with significant cataract and medically unresponsive acute primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG). Phaco-GSL seemed to be safer, with fewer surgical complications, and achieved better visual acuity than phacotrabeculectomy.
OBJECTIVES: To compare the results of combined phaco-GSL with unaugmented phacotrabeculectomy in the management of eyes with medically unresponsive acute PACG and cataract.

PURPOSE: Recently, three large genome-wide association studies have identified multiple variants associated with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) near the ABCA1 gene. Considering that POAG and primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) share many similar clinical manifestations, the present study was conducted to investigate whether these genetic variants were also associated with PACG in a Han Chinese population.
METHODS: A case-control association study of 1122 cases (PACG/PAC) and 1311 normal, matched controls was undertaken. Seven single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) near the ABCA1 gene, i

This case reports the behaviour of a first-generation iStent implant in angle closure glaucoma. A primary angle closure glaucoma patient with a cataract and baseline intraocular pressure (IOP) of 31 mm Hg underwent phacoemulsification with an iStent implant. After an uneventful initial postoperative course, a sudden IOP spike was noted 5 days postoperatively.Careful gonioscopy revealed an obstructed stent lumen due to peripheral iris incarceration. A simple non-invasive method of relieving the occlusion was tried, using pilocarpine 2% eye drops in the clinic, following which there was successf

BACKGROUND: Primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. However, the features of the morphology of Schlemm's canal (SC) in PACG eyes after phacoemulsification with goniosynechialysis (phaco-GSL) surgery are still unknown. This study aimed to evaluate changes in the SC in Chinese patients with PACG after phaco-GSL using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT).
METHODS: In this prospective, cross-sectional study, 70 patients with PACG [of whom 35 had acute primary angle-closure glaucoma (APACG) and 35 had chronic primary angle-closure
