Small bowel tumors and Crohn's disease are common causes of small bowel obstruction. Early stage neoplasms can easily be mistaken for Crohn's disease. Therefore, thorough work-ups including imaging studies and endoscopic evaluation with biopsies are critical for accurate diagnosis. Here we report a case of an otherwise healthy female with progressive onset of multiple, recurrent obstructive symptoms secondary to terminal ileal narrowing who was referred for management of steroid-dependent Crohn's disease. After thorough evaluation, the diagnosis was revised to myeloid granulocytic sarcoma invo

Neutropenia is a frequent adverse event of the pharmacologic treatment of cancer. Morbidity and mortality-associated neutropenia can be successfully treated and prevented with granulocyte-colony stimulating factors (G-CSF). European and American Guidelines recommend their prophylactic use when the expected percentage of febrile neutropenia exceeds 20% or there are concomitant risk factors. Afebrile neutropenia is not considered to benefit from G-CSF treatment. Other approved indications include stem cell mobilization, and an adequate delivery of dose-intense and dose-dense chemotherapy regimen

PURPOSE: To study the effect of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (GCSF) on the incidence of threshold retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of all neonates who received GCSF at our neonatal intensive care unit over a period ranging from January 2003 to September 2007 was performed. Of the 213 patients identified, 50 patients with birth weight <1,500 g and gestational age <32 weeks were included in this study. The incidence of threshold ROP in this subset was compared to a control group (n = 161) obtained from Vermont Oxford Network ROP database over the

Human Salmonella infection, in particular, typhoid fever is a highly infectious disease that remains a major public health problem causing significant morbidity and mortality. The outcome of these infections depends on the host's immune response, particularly the actions of granulocytes and macrophages. Using a mouse model of human typhoid fever, with Salmonella typhimurium infection of wild type and granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) knock out mice we show a delay in the onset of immune-mediated tissue damage in the spleens and livers of GM-CSF(-/-) mice. Furthermore, G…

The diagnosis of incracranial tuberculoma in immune-compromised hosts is often difficult because conventional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of tuberculoma reveals various findings and neurologic symptoms are not typical. Here, we report a case of a 54-yr old man with multiple intracranial tuberculoma who was treated for acute myeloid leukemia. He complained of right-side paresthesia after the third consolidation chemotherapy without leukemic relapse and fever. MR imaging of the brain showed multiple ring-enhanced lesions in the cerebrum, cerebellar hemisphere, and pons. The lesions appeared

The family of core-binding factors includes the DNA-binding subunits Runx1-3 and their common non-DNA-binding partner CBFbeta. We examined the collective role of core-binding factors in hematopoiesis with a hypomorphic Cbfb allelic series. Reducing CBFbeta levels by 3- or 6-fold caused abnormalities in bone development, megakaryocytes, granulocytes, and T cells. T-cell development was very sensitive to an incremental reduction of CBFbeta levels: mature thymocytes were decreased in number upon a 3-fold reduction in CBFbeta levels, and were virtually absent when CBFbeta levels were 6-fold lower.…

A 60-year-old man who underwent radical nephroureterectomy due to left ureteral cancer 22 months before (transitional cell carcinoma, pT4pN0Mx, grade 2, INF beta), was admitted to the hospital with the chief compliant of anorexia and body weight loss. The patient had severe leukocytosis and elevation of C-reactive protein, with no obvious focus of infection. Abdominal plain computed tomographic scan revealed left external ileac lymph node swelling. Positron emission tomography demonstrated left external ileac lymph node recurrence. Enzyme immunoassay of the serum demonstrated a markedly high c

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) has been used in the treatment of neutropenia in hematologic disorders. The neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects of G-CSF were reported in various neurological disease models. In this study, we examined whether G-CSF induces functional recovery after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). ICH was induced using collagenase injection in adult rats. Either G-CSF (50 microg/kg, i.p.) or saline was given from 2 h after ICH and every 24 h for 3 days. 72 h after ICH induction, the rats were sacrificed for histological analysis and measurement of brain e

We report a case of granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) producing urothelial carcinoma of the renal pelvis in a 39-year old man. The patient was admitted to Kobe University Hospital, Kobe, Japan, complaining of macrohematuria and a 6-month history of left abdominal swelling. Abdominal computed tomography showed a large mass in the left kidney and para-aortic lymph node enlargement. A remarkable degree of leukocytosis was detected without any acute infectious disease. Enzyme immunoassay of the serum demonstrated a remarkable high concentration of G-CSF. The patient underwent left neph

BACKGROUND: We have shown that leukocytes collected from sites of interstitial inflammation in patients on hemodialysis have a disturbed expression of CD11b compared to cells from healthy subjects. The aim of the present study was to study adhesion molecule expression on granulocytes in the peripheral circulation and at sites of interstitial inflammation in patients with renal failure.
METHODS: Two skin blisters were raised in 10 patients and 19 healthy subjects and interstitial exudates collected (0 h). Skin chambers were applied and exposed to buffer or serum for 10 h in order to induce an …

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: MYH9-related disorders are autosomal dominant hereditary macrothrombocytopenias caused by mutations in the MYH9 gene. This gene encodes the non-muscular myosin heavy chain type II A (MHCIIA). Among these disorders, May-Hegglin anomaly (MHA), Sebastian syndrome (SS), and Fechtner syndrome (FS) are associated with different types of ribosome inclusions in granulocytes. FS also exhibits Alport-like manifestations: nephropathy, neurosensory deafness, and cataracts. The aim of our study was to assess the granulocyte inclusion ultrastructure in genetically confirmed MYH9-r…

The study reported here was conducted in order to explore the mechanism of action of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) in the treatment of Burkholderia pseudomallei infections (otherwise known as melioidosis). Use of G-CSF as an adjunct to antibiotics has been associated with decreasing mortality among patients with melioidosis in the tropical region of the Northern Territory of Australia. However, using an in vitro whole blood assay, no significant difference was detected in the bactericidal activity of samples obtained from dialysis patients, patients with type 2 diabetes mellitu

Granulocytic sarcoma or chloroma is a malignant extra medullar tumor, based on inmature myeloid cells. It usually emerges as a secondary manifestation of acute myeloid leukemia. Chloromas are scarcely diagnosed in patiens without hematological malignances, either peripheral or medullar, and are thus frequently misdiagnosed for other tumors. In these patients, further development of acute leukemia seems to stand as a rule. Small bowel location of these tumors has hardly been reported. A case of granulocytic sarcoma in a non-leukemic at time of diagnosis patient is reported therein. Medical lite

We report here the two first cases of human ehrlichiosis described in Italy. One patient presented symptoms indicative of ehrlichiosis, such as fever, conjunctivitis, and increase of hepatic enzymes; HGE was confirmed by fourfold seroconversion for HGE antigen. The second patient, a forest worker, was affected by Lyme disease, and in this case HGE was suspected because of fever, leukopenia, and seroconversion.

To determine whether the agent of human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE) (Anaplasma phagocytophilum) may be maintained in a parallel enzootic cycle between cottontail rabbits and their ticks, we sampled these hosts from a zoonotic site during five transmission seasons. Evidence of infection was sought by microscopy and polymerase chain reaction from rabbit blood or splenic tissue, and from ticks collected from rabbits or from vegetation. Approximately 27% of all rabbits sampled contained evidence of active infection, and 66% were seropositive. The vectorial capacity of Ixodes dentatus was demon

Granulocytic sarcoma is a rare extramedullary malignant mass composed of primitive cells of the granulocytic lineage. It can arise from any part of the body and is frequently associated with haematological diseases, commonly acute myeloid leukaemia. Rarely, it has been found in conjunction with myelodysplastic syndrome. We report a case of cutaneous granulocytic sarcoma in a 73-year-old lady. The patient presented with a two-month history of multiple skin nodules which were confirmed by skin biopsy to be granulocytic sarcoma. Bone marrow examination was consistent with myelodysplastic syndrome
