BACKGROUND: In the initial phases of surgical training, attentional resources are monopolized by the execution of novel tasks. This consideration can result in overwhelming attentional resources, leaving few for other tasks. Practicing a technical task decreases the attentional resources required for its execution. These resources are then free for redistribution to other, clinically important tasks. This pilot study investigated how laboratory-based surgical training on a technical procedure affects concurrent acquisition of other, nontechnical information.

BACKGROUND: Low birth weight (LBW) infants are more prone to possible growth disorders, and their mothers need more specific education sessions regarding breastfeeding practice. This study aimed to investigate the effect of a planned lactation education program on the mother's breastfeeding practice and weight gain in LBW infants.
METHODS: A randomized clinical trial study was conducted on 80 mother-LBW infant dyads admitted to a gynecology and obstetrics hospital. The participants were selected randomly and divided into an experimental group and a control group, each with 40 mothers. Informa

High HIV incidence in the US South disproportionately affects adolescents, young adults, and Black women. Using a community-engaged approach and intervention mapping, we developed PrEP-Pro, an intervention to support family medicine physician-trainees to elicit a sexual history from and provide pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to adolescents, with special emphasis on engaging with Black adolescent girls and young women (AGYW). Intervention content includes PrEP curricula, adaptations to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s sexual history tool, and a PrEP Champion training prog

BACKGROUND: The muscles related to piano practice are mainly concentrated in the fingers and upper limbs, and the muscles related to other parts of the body are weak. Compared with other sports injuries, the injuries caused by piano practice are mainly chronic injuries caused by long-term strain of the upper limbs, and acute injuries rarely occur. The purpose of this study was to analyze the therapeutic effect of hand muscle injury caused by piano practice.
METHOD: A total of 60 patients with hand muscle injury caused by piano practice admitted to our hospital from January 2019 to June 2020 w

BACKGROUND: The American Urological Association published guidelines in 2014 regarding management of undescended testicles (UDT). Despite these guidelines, prior studies have indicated discordance between guidelines and actual practice, especially in rural states. This study aims to identify if educating referring providers improves management of UDT.
METHODS: Patients with UDT referred to our institution were divided into two groups: those referred prior to (Group 1) and after (Group 2) targeted education. A retrospective review was performed to compare the groups in terms of age at time of

The Research to Practice column is designed to provide advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) with an analysis of a current research topic with implications for practice change within the emergency care settings. This review examines a recent study conducted by entitled "Ketamine as an adjunct to opioids for acute pain in the emergency department: A randomized controlled trial." The authors conducted a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial at a single academic emergency department (ED) to compare standard opioid pain control in the ED population to the use of ketamine in co

AIM: To develop a comprehensive dementia nursing competency-practice framework applicable across diverse healthcare settings.
BACKGROUND: Despite the growing prevalence of dementia, there is a lack of standardized competency frameworks that bridge theoretical knowledge and practical nursing applications in dementia care across different healthcare environments.
DESIGN: A qualitative study utilizing focus group interviews and framework analysis methodology.
METHODS: A sequential three-phase approach was employed: (1) development of a preliminary framework through narrative review of ten stud

Patients with chronic aphasia were assigned randomly to a group to receive either conventional aphasia therapy or constraint-induced (CI) aphasia therapy, a new therapeutic technique requiring intense practice over a relatively short period of consecutive days. CI aphasia therapy is realized in a communicative therapeutic environment constraining patients to practice systematically speech acts with which they have difficulty. Patients in both groups received the same amount of treatment (30 to 35 hours) as 10 days of massed-practice language exercises for the CI aphasia therapy group (3 hours

Background: Child abuse is widespread, occurs in all cultures and communities, remains undiscovered in 90% of cases and has serious long-term effects. Physicians generally underidentify and underreport child abuse. To understand this low reporting rate and how the suspicion of child abuse arises, we examined GPs' experiences.Research questions: How does the suspicion of child abuse arise in GPs' diagnostic reasoning? How do they act upon their suspicion and which barriers do they encounter in their management? Methods: Twenty-six GPs participated in four focus groups. We used purposive sampling

Guatemalan gay and bisexual men, men who have sex with men (MSM), and transgender persons carry disproportionate burden of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections compared with other Guatemalan subgroups. However, little is known about the determinants of sexual health to inform health promotion and disease prevention interventions among these sexual minorities. We sought to explore sexual health and HIV risk among Guatemalan sexual minorities, using a community-based participatory research approach. We conducted 8 focus groups (n = 87 participants total) and 10 individual in-depth inter

Peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) insertion is a constituted a routine invasive clinical procedure predominantly performed by nursing staff in hospital settings. While essential for short-term intravenous therapy administration, this intervention carried inherent risk of procedure-related complications due to its invasive characteristics. Consequently, enhancing nurses' clinical knowledge and operational competencies in PIVC placement and maintenance emerged as a critical determinant of patient safety and therapeutic outcomes. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of knowled

INTRODUCTION: Nutrition is not currently integrated into standard care provision in sickle cell disease (SCD) impacting patients experience, access and outcomes of nutrition. The lack of understanding of the nutritional needs in SCD and its impact on patient outcomes requires exploration to integrate nutrition into clinical practice. However, there is a paucity of qualitative studies conducted with sickle cell service users/carers to explore their views, knowledge and experiences of nutritional care and the influencing factors affecting nutrition integration in SCD care.

Ethiopia has one of the highest rates of undernutrition among children under five (U5) and women of reproductive age (WRA) globally, alongside rising overweight/obesity, particularly in urban areas. Poor diet is a shared driver of multiple forms of malnutrition. We used a participatory photography (Photovoice) approach to explore the lived experiences of WRA and their children U5 in adopting healthy diets across lower- and higher- socio-economic status (SES) groups in Addis Ababa. Women took photographs illustrating challenges to healthy diets, and five focus groups (n = 31 women) were conduct

BACKGROUND: Hormonal intrauterine device (IUD) is an effective contraceptive method with high user satisfaction rates. To guide the introduction of hormonal IUD into the public sector in Tanzania, an operational research study was conducted to assess client acceptability of hormonal IUDs.
OBJECTIVE: To explore clients' perspectives on contraceptives and experiences with hormonal IUDs.
METHODS: This observational mixed-methods study (2023-2024) used focus group discussions with current or future contraceptive users (N = 58, baseline), plus facility register reviews, a structured quantitative

BACKGROUND: Experiential learning in pharmacy education fosters professional competencies through real-world engagement. Despite the high burden of breast cancer in the UAE, adolescents are an under-targeted group in awareness campaigns. Additionally, pharmacy curricula rarely incorporate student-led education initiatives. This study evaluated a student-led breast cancer awareness campaign to explore its educational impact on pharmacy students and short-term knowledge gains among adolescent girls.
