The Effect of Mechanical Tongue Cleaning on Oral Malodor and Tongue Coating.

BACKGROUND: Mechanical tongue cleaning is an important oral hygiene procedure; it is known that a significant cause of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), a major component of bad breath, is due to the bacteria coating the tongue. This study was conducted to identify the effect of mechanical tongue cleaning on reducing bad breath and tongue coating. METHODS: Various mechanical tongue-cleaning methods were studied, including removing tongue coating using a toothbrush, removing tongue coating using a tongue scraper, and removing tongue coating using a toothbrush and a tongue scraper together. The

Effects of eradication of Helicobacter pylori on oral malodor and the oral environment: a single-center observational study.

OBJECTIVE: Although a relationship between Helicobacter pylori and oral malodor has been suggested, it remains to be confirmed. One reason for this is that many studies assess oral malodor subjectively. Another reason for the uncertainty is that the reduction in oral malodor may be due to the effect of antibiotics on the oral microbiota. In this study, changes in oral malodor along with the eradication treatment of H. pylori were investigated by organoleptic test and gas chromatography. In addition, the salivary bacterial composition and clinical parameters were analyzed. RESULTS: The organol

Probiotics: Evidence of Oral Health Implications.

The prevalence of common oral diseases, such as dental caries, periodontal diseases and oral candidiasis remains high in the general population. Various preventive strategies have been proposed and included in national health programs promoting oral health. Interest in probiotics in light of oral health has gradually evolved as attractive means in prevention of oral infectious diseases. The aim of the present review is to outline the current evidence on the role of probiotic species on oral health parameters and their beneficial role in contributing to healthier oral environment.

A new method of choice for organoleptic scoring: The negative-pressure technique.

AIM: To examine an organoleptic scoring method (OLS) whereby the sample is collected by negative pressure in a syringe and is subsequently smelled and rated away from the patient. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data of 476 patients visiting a specialized halitosis clinic in Leuven (Belgium) were reviewed retrospectively. Organoleptic (with the classic and with the negative-pressure method) and instrumental (with the Halimeter® and OralChroma™ ) ratings of breath odour were retrieved from patient files together with the final diagnosis. The correlations between the different methods were examined (Spe…

Association of odor from infected root canal analyzed by an electronic nose with isolated bacteria.

Infected root canals usually cause foul odor. On sensory testing, objective evaluation of the odor is difficult because of the subjectivity of the examiner. In this study, the odor of the canal content was analyzed by an electronic nose. Moreover, association of the odor with culturable bacteria isolated from the root canal was examined. The median of the odor index (indicating odor quantity) in nonvital teeth group was significantly higher than that in vital teeth. When Prevotella, Porphyromonas, Fusobacterium, or Bacteroides was detected, the value of the odor index and the strength of smell

Oral malodor: a periodontal perspective.

This article reviews the etiology, diagnosis and treatment of oral malodor from a periodontal perspective. The connections among periodontal pathogenic microorganisms, periodontal disease and oral malodor have been strongly implicated but not proved. Although oral malodor is probably not caused by periodontal disease, there is ample evidence to suggest that periodontal disease increases the severity of oral malodor.

Effect of variation in temperature on malodor generation from different units of a wastewater treatment plant.

This study investigates the effect of temperature variation on malodor generation across different units of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The results demonstrate that higher temperatures exacerbated odor emission due to increased microbial activity with all the different units showing maximum odorous gas production at the highest temperatures used (35 °C and 45 °C) in this study. The maximum total odor activity value (OAV) of 353106 was obtained for anoxic and anaerobic unit at 45 °C. The variation in composition of odor-causing gases was also dependent on wastewater characteristics tha

Mouthwashes: Do They Work and Should We Use Them? Part 2: Anticaries, Antihalitosis and Dry Mouth Relief Efficacy of Mouthwashes.

This article will review the anticaries, antihalitosis and dry mouth relief efficacy of mouthwashes. Fluoride mouthwashes may provide an additional benefit to toothpaste and gel in children with a high risk of dental caries, but toothpaste alone may be a more acceptable mode of delivery. There may be a beneficial effect of fluoride mouthwashes on caries levels in older adults, particularly those at higher risk of root caries. The available data of the antihalitosis effect of mouthwashes neither supports nor contra-indicates their use. The key area where a mouthwash may be of use in the treatme…

Oral malodour and active ingredients for treatment.

Oral care preparations are widely used for the treatment of oral malodour as over-the-counter products. Bad breath is highly distressing to an individual's confidence during social interaction, which is a large concern nowadays as the consumption of these products is increasing worldwide. However, oral deodorant ingredients are rarely studied compared with other cosmetic ingredients, and the only preparations which are well known are those contained in dentifrices and mouthrinses. This review briefly summarizes the compounds which cause oral malodour and the treatments available. The active in

[Health information on oral malodor in Japanese newspaper articles].

OBJECTIVES: Mass media is an important source for the general public to obtain health information. Newspapers especially have the advantages … escribed as the causes of malodor. Only 35 articles (26%) described the treatment and prevention of halitosis. According to the questionnaire survey, 39% of the patients answered that they did not know the causes of malodor. Less than half knew that oral problems were related with malodor. DISCUSSION: It was revealed that the information about oral malodor …

Malodour in denture wearers: an ill-defined problem.

Denture plaque has not been studied to the same extent as dental plaque, and although there are many similarities in microbial composition, there are some significant differences. Denture-induced stomatitis is associated with poor denture hygiene, a more acidogenic plaque and the presence of Candida albicans. Obligate Gram-negative anaerobic micro-organisms, although present in denture plaque, have rarely been specifically investigated. Opportunist pathogens including coliforms and staphylococci have been isolated from dentures. Teeth adjacent to partial dentures are more susceptible to caries

Oral malodor and its relevance to periodontal disease in the dog.

Oral malodor has been studied extensively in humans but very little work has been done in dogs where it constitutes a significant problem. In this article we review its causes, methods of detection, and strategies for preventing it. Oral malodor arises from microbial metabolism of exogenous and endogenous proteinaceous substrates in the oral cavity and is exacerbated by periodontal disease and poor oral hygiene. Gram negative bacteria found in plaque, in periodontal pockets, and on the dorsum of the tongue are primarily responsible for odor production. The volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) hydr
