Helmet regulation in Vietnam: impact on health, equity and medical impoverishment.

BACKGROUND: Vietnam's 2007 comprehensive motorcycle helmet policy increased helmet use from about 30% of riders to about 93%. We aimed to simulate the effect that this legislation might have on: (a) road traffic deaths and non-fatal injuries, (b) individuals' direct acute care injury treatment costs, (c) individuals' income losses from missed work and (d) individuals' protection against medical impoverishment. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We used published secondary data from the literature to perform a retrospective extended cost-effectiveness analysis simulation study of the policy. Our model indi

Examination of factors associated with use rates after transition from a universal to partial motorcycle helmet use law.

OBJECTIVES: Motorcycle riders account for a disproportionately high number of traffic injuries and fatalities compared to occupants of other vehicle types. Though research has demonstrated the benefits of helmet use in preventing serious and fatal injuries in the event of a crash, helmet use has remained relatively stable in the United States, where the most recent national estimates show a 64% use rate. Use rates have been markedly lower among those states that do not have a universal helmet law for all riders. In 2012, the state of Michigan repealed its longstanding mandatory helmet use law.

National mandatory motorcycle helmet laws may save $2.2 billion annually: An inpatient and value of statistical life analysis.

BACKGROUND: While statistics exist regarding the overall rate of fatalities in motorcyclists with and without helmets, a combined inpatient and value of statistical life (VSL) analysis has not previously been reported. METHODS: Statistical data of motorcycle collisions were obtained from the Centers for Disease Control, National Highway Transportation Safety Board, and Governors Highway Safety Association. The VSL estimate was obtained from the 2002 Department of Transportation calculation. Statistics on helmeted versus nonhelmeted motorcyclists, death at the scene, and inpatient death were o

Neck muscle activity in fighter pilots wearing night-vision equipment during simulated flight.

INTRODUCTION: Night-vision goggles (NVG) in jet fighter aircraft appear to increase the risk of neck strain due to increased neck loading. The present aim was, therefore, to evaluate the effect on neck-muscle activity and subjective ratings of head-worn night-vision (NV) equipment in controlled simulated flights. METHODS: Five experienced fighter pilots twice flew a standardized 2.5-h program in a dynamic flight simulator; one session with NVG and one with standard helmet mockup (control session). Each session commenced with a 1-h simulation at 1 Gz followed by a 1.5-h dynamic flight with rep

Determinants of helmet use behaviour among employed motorcycle riders in Yazd, Iran based on theory of planned behaviour.

This paper reports on predictors of helmet use behaviour, using variables based on the theory of planned behaviour model among the employed motorcycle riders in Yazd-Iran, in an attempt to identify influential factors that may be addressed through intervention efforts. In 2007, a cluster random sample of 130 employed motorcycle riders in the city of Yazd in central Iran, participated in the study. Appropriate instruments were designed to measure the variables of interest (attitude, subjective norms, perceived behaviour control, intention along with helmet use behaviour). Reliability and validi

All-terrain vehicle-related deaths--West Virginia, 1985-1997.

From 1985 through 1997, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) identified 113 deaths associated with all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) in West Virginia. This report summarizes data from the CPSC ATV-related death database and on-site and/or follow-up telephone investigations; findings indicate that approximately two thirds of deaths were caused by injury to the head or neck. Consistent use of helmets by riders can substantially reduce ATV-related deaths.

The continuing problem of all-terrain vehicle injuries in children.

BACKGROUND: After the introduction of the all-terrain vehicle (ATV) in the United States in 1971, deaths and injuries in both adults and children rose dramatically. In 1988, the Consumer's Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and all manufacturers of ATVs signed legally binding "Consent Decrees," designed to decrease the number of ATV-related deaths and injuries, especially in children. METHODS: This report reviews retrospectively the mechanism of injury as well as the injuries in 51 children caused by ATV crashes during a 5-year period after the signing of the decrees. RESULTS: Data included ag

Analysis of fatal motorcycle crashes: crash typing.

There were 2074 crashes fatal to a motorcycle driver in the United States during 1992. A computer program was developed to convert Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS) data for these crashes into standard format English language "crash reports". The computer generated reports were analyzed and crash type categories were defined. Five defined crash type categories accounted for 1785 (86%) of the 2074 crash events: Ran off-road (41%); ran traffic control (18%); oncoming or head-on (11%); left-turn oncoming (8%); and motorcyclist down (7%). Alcohol and excessive speed were common factors associ

Would a helmet law for snowmobile riders reduce head injuries?

Swedish authorities have discussed making the use of helmets for snowmobile riders compulsory. To evaluate the possible injury-reducing potential of such a law, 245 non-fatally injured riders and 104 fatalities were analyzed. Non-minor (AIS > 1) head injuries were far less common than in motorcycling, and many fast driving young snowmobile riders seem to use helmets regardless of a law. The persons with head injuries who had not used helmets, or whose helmet use was unknown, had violated other laws, most often the Traffic Temperance Law, or the law forbidding driving on public roads. A helmet

Head injuries after serious bicycle accidents.

Between 1987 and 1988 there were 47 serious or fatal injuries among bicycle riders in the city of Tel Aviv-Yafo (Serious injury was defined as being hospitalized for at least 24 hours). Collisions with vehicles, mostly cars, were responsible for about 80% of these cases. Two-thirds of the accidents occurred in adults aged 20 and over. We were able to trace the records of 24 of the 47 who were injured. Head trauma was the most common form of severe injury, occurring in 11 of the 24 cases. Two of the 11 died instantly and one died after 14 days of hospitalization, all from severe brain damage. E

[Causes, injuries, therapy and possibilities of prevention of equine-related accidents. Results of a 2-center-study].

BACKGROUND: Horse riding is associated with a high rate of injuries. The possibilities of prevention are limited because of deficient knowledge about the causes and mechanisms of equine-related accidents. In the present study 198 equine-related accidents were analyzed and based on these data risk groups were identified and guidelines to improve safety in horse riding were formulated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this 2-center study the accidents of 169 riders over a period of 12 months were analyzed. Data on equine-related patterns of injury and the resulting treatment were collated from the clin

[Factors associated with fatal trauma in Medellín (Colombia) motorcyclists].

INTRODUCTION: Motorcycles have come into widespread use as mode of transport and commuting to work. Given the degree of trauma occurring in motorcycle accidents, this increased use has generated adverse consequences for public health. Categorization of factors associated with these events can form the basis for prevention strategies. OBJECTIVE: The characteristics of person, time, place, vehicle and circumstances of occurrence were described for motorcycle accidents involving rider injury, and the associations were explored with fatal trauma in the city of Medellín, Colombia, in 2005-2008.
