A report is made on the continuous registration of oxygen consumption, heart rate, respiratory rate and rectal temperature in 32 neonates during the first two hours of life. A short account of the registration technique is given. A comparative study shows, that oxygen consumption, heart rate and respiratory rate fall during the period of observation, whereas the rectal temperature rises. 26 out of the 32 neonates demonstrated a approximately linear fall of each of the oxygen consumption values during the period of observation. There is a similar relationship, which is statistically verified, b…

BACKGROUND: Chronic low-grade systemic inflammation is a key component in atherogenesis. Decreased heart rate variability (HRV), a strong predictor of cardiovascular events, has been associated with elevations in circulating levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin (IL)-6, and fibrinogen in apparently healthy individuals. We investigated whether decreased HRV is associated with inflammatory markers in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD).
METHODS: We studied the relationship between HRV and CRP, IL-6, and fibrinogen in 862 outpatients with CHD. All participants provided fasting b…

BACKGROUND: A growing number of observational studies have suggested a potential association between heart rate variability (HRV) and dementia. However, the causal nature of this relationship remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the causal relationship between HRV and dementia using two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis.
METHODS: Two-sample MR analysis was conducted to examine the causal effects of HRV phenotypes, including the peak-valley respiratory sinus arrhythmia or high frequency power (pvRSA/HF), the root mean square of the successive differences of in…

Major Depressive Disorder can be conceptualized as a chronic stress condition associated with autonomic dysregulation, including blunted heart rate reactivity, elevated basal cortisol levels and higher low-grade peripheral inflammation, pointing to an autonomic imbalance with relative sympathetic overactivation and parasympathetic attenuation. Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) offers a non-invasive method to stimulate the vagus nerve, as key component of the parasympathetic system, to restore autonomic balance. Here, we examined whether emotional (i.e., positive and negative emoti…

The serum cytokine profile is well established in patients with chronic Chagas heart disease (CCHD). Little is known, however, about the relationship between plasma cytokine levels and frequency-domain parameters of heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with CCHD. We included patients with CCHD with ECG and/or echocardiographic abnormalities; people with no cardiac history matched by sex and age served as controls. ELISA performed cytokine quantification. The HRV in the frequency domain was used to detect parasympathetic and sympathetic dysfunction. Serum cytokine levels were higher in pati…

Background: Heart rate variability (HRV) is an established, non-invasive parameter for the assessment of cardiac autonomic nervous activity and the health status in general cardiology. However, there are few studies on HRV in adults with congenital heart defects (CHDs). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the use of long-term continuous HRV measurement for the assessment of global health status in adults with cyanotic CHD. Methods: This prospective study included 45 adults (40% female, mean age = 35.2 ± 9.2 [range: 19-58] years) after cardiac surgical repair. HRV parameters were calcu…

BACKGROUND: Current guidelines recommend maintaining a resting heart rate below 100-110 beats per minute (bpm) for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). However, there is a lack of research on various treatment approaches for patients with both atrial fibrillation and coronary heart disease (AF&CHD). We have discussed the primary therapeutic options for controlling resting heart rate in patients with AF&CHD.
METHODS: We conducted a post hoc analysis of the AFFIRM (Atrial Fibrillation Follow-up Investigation of Rhythm Management) trial. Our study included 3986(98.2%) participants with AF, of…

BACKGROUND: Exercise training is important for people with congenital heart disease (CHD). However, accurate exercise intensity prescription remains challenging. We sought to evaluate the validity of using the percentage of peak HR (%HRpeak) and HR reserve (%HRR) methods to estimate exercise intensity in people with CHD.
METHODS: Cardiopulmonary exercise tests from 2009 to 2017 were reviewed. Light, moderate, and vigorous exercise intensity were characterized using guideline-based percentage of peak oxygen uptake (VO2) ranges, and corresponding HRs were averaged at each intensity. The estimat

In this study, we investigated the effect of principal component analysis (PCA) in congestive heart failure (CHF) diagnosis using various machine learning algorithms from 5-min HRV data. The extracted 59 heart rate variability (HRV) features consist of statistical time-domain measures, frequency-domain measures (power spectral density estimations from Fourier transform and Lomb-Scargle methods), time-frequency HRV measures (Wavelet transform), and nonlinear HRV measures (Poincare plot, symbolic dynamics, detrended fluctuation analysis, and sample entropy). All these HRV features are the classi…

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) results in sympathetic overdrive. Increased nocturnal heart rate variability (HRV) is a surrogate marker of autonomic disturbance. The aim was to study the association of the apnoea-hypopnea index (AHI), nocturnal hypoxaemia, and sleep fragmentation with nocturnal HRV to address the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying autonomic disturbance in OSA.
METHODS: Participants of the Sleep Hearth Health Study with available data on nocturnal HRV and an AHI ≥10/h have been included in this cross-sectional analysis. The main outcome of interest was the as…

BACKGROUND: Increased resting heart rate is a risk factor for cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. Mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs) have been shown to improve cardiac sympathetic nerve activity, reduce heart rate and attenuate left ventricular remodelling. Whether or not the beneficial effects of MRA are affected by heart rate in heart failure patients with reduced ejection fraction (HFREF) is unclear.
METHODS: We undertook a secondary analysis of data from the Eplerenone in Mild Patients Hospitalization and Survival Study in Heart Failure study to assess if clinical outcomes,…

Heart rate recovery after 1 min of exercise cessation (HRR-1) is an important prognostic factor in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). We aimed to further elucidate the association between HRR-1 and known psychosocial risk factors in patients referred for comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation. We examined 521 patients with coronary heart disease in the first week of an outpatient cardiac rehabilitation program. Depressive and anxiety symptoms were measured with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and positive (PA) and negative affect were rated with the Global Mood Scale. Depress…

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between baseline resting heart rate and incidence of heart failure (HF) and global and regional left ventricular (LV) dysfunction.
BACKGROUND: The association of resting heart rate to HF and LV function has not been well described in an asymptomatic multi-ethnic population.
METHODS: Resting heart rate was measured in participants in the MESA (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis) trial at inclusion. Incident HF was registered (n = 176) during follow-up (median 7 years) in those who underwent cardiac magnetic resonan…

BACKGROUND: Many patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) do not complain of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), possibly due to increased sympathetic nervous activity (SNA) and accompanying heightened alertness. We hypothesized that in patients with OSA, those without subjective EDS (Epworth Sleepiness Scale, ESS score < 11) would have higher very low frequency (VLF) heart rate variability (HRV) during sleep, reflecting greater sympathetic heart rate modulation than patients with an ESS score ≥ 11.
METHODS: Patients with severe OSA (AHI ≥ 30: 26 with and 65 without heart failure) w…
