Is Helicobacter pylori a pathogenic agent of the cervix uteri?

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori is a gram-negative, microaerophilic rod-shaped bacterium that lives beneath the gastric mucosal layers, on the surface of epithelial cells. Gastric infection with this organism causes inflammation of the gastric mucosa, which can lead to gastritis, duodenal or gastric ulcers and even in rare cases to gastric carcinoma or MALT lymphoma. Approximately 50% of the population of the entire world is believed to be infected with H. pylori, but the exact route of transmission is still uncertain. It has been speculated that the cervix, with its endocervical columnar epit…

Growth-induced changes in the proteome of Helicobacter pylori.

Helicobacter pylori is a major human pathogen that is responsible for a number of gastrointestinal infections. We have used 2-DE to characterise protein synthesis in bacteria grown either on solid agar-based media or in each of two broth culture media (Brucella and brain heart infusion (BHI) broth). Significant differences were observed in the proteomes of bacteria grown either on agar-based or in broth media. Major changes in protein abundance were identified using principal component analysis (PCA), which delineated the profiles derived for the three key growth conditions (i.e. agar plates, …

The role of Helicobacter pylori in urticaria and atopic dermatitis.

INTRODUCTION: Helicobacter pylori, a common cause of gastritis and peptic ulcer, has been associated with several extragastrointestinal diseases. Many studies have shown a positive relation between H. pylori infection and both chronic idiopathic urticaria and atopic dermatitis. METHODS: The study included 20 patients diagnosed with chronic idiopathic urticaria and 20 with atopic dermatitis. A randomized sample of 20 healthy individuals was selected as a control group. H. pylori infection was assessed using the C-urea breath test, and anti-H. pylori IgG antibody titers were determined by enzym…

Association of cagA+ Helicobacter pylori with adenotonsillar hypertrophy.

Cytotoxin-associated gene A (cagA) of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) encodes a highly immunogenic and virulence-associated protein. The presence of cagA(+) H. pylori strains in tonsil and adenoid tissues may affect clinical outcome. The aim of the present study was to determine the presence of H. pylori cagA gene in tonsil and adenoid tissues and to establish the potential association of cagA(+) H. pylori in recurrent adenotonsillitis (RAT) and adenotonsillar hypertrophy (ATH). For this aim, a total of 118 tissue samples (71 tonsil and 47 adenoid tissues) were collected from a total of 71 chi…

Helicobacter pylori, pepsinogen, and gastric adenocarcinoma in Hawaii.

BACKGROUND: The objective was to investigate the association of Helicobacter pylori and serum pepsinogen (PG) levels with gastric adenocarcinoma. METHODS: Serum obtained from 299 patients at the time of cancer diagnosis and from 336 population-based control subjects was tested for PG I, PG II, and antibodies to H. pylori and to CagA. RESULTS: Subjects with low PG I levels or low PG I/II ratios were at increased risk for cardia and noncardia gastric cancer, whereas those with H. pylori or CagA seropositivity had an elevated risk for noncardia cancer only. Subjects seropositive for either H. p…

Helicobacter pylori: why it still matters in 2005.

Despite falling prevalence rates in the developed world, H pylori is still present in the United States and is particularly prevalent among racial minorities and recent immigrants. H pylori infection is clearly associated with an increased risk of peptic ulcer disease, gastric cancer, and MALT lymphoma, and it is associated with some cases of uninvestigated dyspepsia. Identification and eradication of H pylori improves outcomes in patients with peptic ulcer disease and causes tumor regression in patients with MALT lymphoma. It is uncertain whether H pylori eradication will improve outcomes in

Helicobacter infection, chronic inflammation, and the development of malignancy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Chronic infection with Helicobacter pylori affects approximately half the world and results in malignancy in a small subset of this population. Although the frequency of infection in developed nations is falling with a resultant decline in H. pylori-associated peptic ulcer disease, gastric cancer remains the second major cause of cancer death worldwide, with H. pylori infection being a major attributable factor in the development of gastric cancer. This review provides an update on the pathogenesis of Helicobacter infection, the malignancies associated with infection, and ho…

HP0958 is an essential motility gene in Helicobacter pylori.

Motility is an essential colonization factor for the human gastric pathogen Helicobacter pylori. The H. pylori genome encodes most known flagellar proteins, although a number of key transcription regulators, chaperones, and structural proteins have not yet been identified. Using recently published yeast two-hybrid data we identified HP0958 as a potential motility-associated protein due to its strong interactions with RpoN (sigma(54)) and FliH, a flagellar ATPase regulator. HP0958 exhibits no sequence similarity to any published flagellar genes but contains a carboxy-terminal zinc finger domain…

[Helicobacter pylori and stomach adenoma in outpatient practice].

AIM: To study the role of Helicobacter pylori (HP) persistence in generation of gastric mucosa adenoma. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Esophagogastroduodenoscopy with biopsy of the mucosa from the antral portion and body of the stomach was made for diagnosis of HP and morphological changes in 28 patients aged 47 to 86 years with gastric adenoma. RESULTS: Chronic gastritis with HP was diagnosed in 57.1% patients. HP contamination was, as a rule, weak (32.1%) or moderate (53.5%). It correlated with activity of inflammatory and dystrophic changes (the first degree--35.7%, the second one--39.3%; atrophy-…

[Epidemiologic study of Helicobacter pylori infection in Perú].

We present the results of our investigations in the epidemiology of H. pylori infection in Peru during the last two decades. The prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in Lima is decreasing in people of middle and high socioeconomic status and continues stationary in people of low socioeconomic status. This decrease is similar in Peruvian and Japanese population in this city, and is associated to the decrease of the gastrointestinal diseases related to this bacterium: peptic ulcer and stomach adenocarcinoma. The infection is slightly greater in males and is acquired in early ages of life.…

Helicobacter pylori and Alzheimer's disease: a possible link.

BACKGROUND: Although serological findings indicate the presence of a relationship between Helicobacter pylori (HP) and vascular disease, no data have been reported about a possible association of HP with dementia. The aim of the present study was to determine whether chronic HP infection might play a role in Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: Plasma homocysteine level, serum folate and vitamin B(12) concentrations, plasma pyridoxal phosphate level, IgG and IgA antibodies to HP, and C-reactive protein (CRP) were determined in 30 AD patients, 30 patients affected by vascular dementia (VaD), and …

Update on the immunologic basis of Helicobacter pylori gastritis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Helicobacter pylori is a ubiquitous bacterial pathogen that has evolved to chronically infect the gastric mucosal surface, evade host immune clearance, and cause peptic ulcer disease or gastric neoplasia in a significant minority of infected individuals. Understanding the colonization, persistence, and virulence determinants of the bacterium as well as the innate and adaptive immune responses of the host are critically important if we are to develop novel treatment strategies for eradication of infection and prevention of H. pylori-induced gastroduodenal disease. RECENT FIN…

[Ex-Helicobacter gastritis: is it a neologism or clinical reality?].

The article examines variants of the course of chronic nonatrophic gastritis during the post-eradication period (ex-Helicobacter gastritis). The term "ex-Helicobacter gastritis" has been substantiated as the gastritis onset as a result of Helicobacter pylori infection, the course of which does not depend on the therapeutic scheme of the bacteria elimination. The algorithm of the patient treatment upon the anti-HP therapy has been discussed.

[Helicobacter pylori infection and diseases of the stomach and duodenum].

The last twenty years have been the witness of the major revolution in the medical science and practice. Pathogenesis of gastric ulcer disease has probably undergone the most serious change both in the conception and in practice. Though the number of information concerning Helicobacter pylori (Hp) is rising explosively, our understanding of the specific and detailed role of Hp infection in the pathogenesis of various Hp related diseases remains modest.

Which test for Helicobacter pylori in primary care?

Around 4% of primary care consultations are for dyspepsia, a term used for a specific group of upper gastrointestinal symptoms that includes abdominal discomfort, recurrent epigastric pain, bloating and heartburn. National guidelines recommend testing patients with uncomplicated dyspepsia for Helicobacter pylori infection, giving eradication therapy to those found to be infected and re-testing those who remain symptomatic after such treatment. Non-invasive tests for H. pylori avoid the need for endoscopy and biopsy to confirm infection, and several are now available for use in primary care. He…
