In developed countries, it is said that "threats of infectious diseases are already thought as things of the past". However, as you can see … laria and more than half of the NTDs are parasitic diseases, such as trypanosomiasis and soil-borne helminthiasis. These are caused by parasites, with eukaryotes similar to their host mammals. In the case of these NTDs, protective immune responses induced by differences between a pathogen and host do not work well, and there is no vaccine against parasites. As …

BACKGROUND: This study presents evidence on the cost of integrated preventive chemotherapy treatment (PCT) to control trachoma, schistosomiasis, lymphatic filariasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) in Niger. Integrated PCT costs are compared with the costs of vertical PCT control.
METHODS: Data were analysed for the integrated PCT of 2008 and 2009 in six districts. Receipts, treatment registers, coverage forms and drug registers provided cost and treatment information. Economic costs of the time spent on campaign activities by government staff was derived from a survey of 56 staff. I…

Opisthorchosis is a helminthiasis affecting mainly the hepatobiliary system and pancreas; its most dramatic complication is malignization of the organs infected by the parasites. The causative agents of opisthorchosis are two species of liver flukes, the trematodes belonging to the family Opisthorchiidae--Opisthorchis felineus and O. viverrini. The Chinese liver fluke, Clonorchis sinensis, also member of the family Opisthorchiidae, causes clonorchosis, a disease very close in symptomatology. According to different estimations, up to 40 million people are currently infected with these liver flu…

OBJECTIVE: Although eosinophilia is one of the typical clinical features of some helminth infections, the degree of eosinophilia in helminthiasis is usually 10% to 30% with a total white blood cell count of 10,000 to 20,000/mm3. Here we report a case of extraordinarily high eosinophilia (91%; absolute eosinophil count, 84,000/mm3) caused by Paragonimus westermani infection. To determine the mechanisms of eosinophilia, the levels of several eosinophilopoietic cytokines in the patient's sera were measured during the course of treatment.
METHODS: Serum levels of three cytokines, granulocyte-macr…

Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) are intestinal parasitic worms that present a significant global health challenge. Traditionally, the diagnosis of STH infections has relied on microscopy; however, molecular tests such as quantitative PCR (qPCR) are now widely adopted for their greater sensitivity, increasingly reduced cost and higher throughput. Recent evidence highlights genetic diversity in both coding and non-coding DNA regions of STHs routinely targeted by molecular diagnostics. Most qPCR assays have been developed using a limited selection of parasite isolates, thus likely overlooking t

PURPOSE: Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections affect approximately 1.5 billion people globally. Although the World Health Organization (WHO) aims for 75% mass drug administration (MDA) coverage by 2030, the long-term population benefit remains debated. This review aims to describe the characteristics of recent mass deworming studies, synthesize parasitologic and coverage outcomes, and identify programmatic themes.
METHODS: Search was conducted across Scopus, PubMed, and EBSCO CINAHL, restricted to studies reporting both parasitologic efficacy outcomes and MDA coverage. Following a risk

Aquaculture has been recognized as one of the main solutions to the growing global food demand, as well as a significant resource for addressing the limitations imposed on wild fisheries. The most important fish species for Brazilian fish farming is Colossoma macropomum due to its zootechnical characteristics, economic and cultural importances. In cultivated systems, the presence of parasites can represent a major problem. Under these conditions, parasites of the phyla Acanthocephala and Platyhelminthes are commonly found parasitizing farmed fishes. This study aimed to investigate the helminth

Background: Vaccination represents an efficient way to control communicable diseases. Reliable vaccines would reduce the use of anthelmintics drugs and fight against the concern of anthelmintics resistances. Unfortunately, anthelmintic vaccines face many difficulties in their development. One of the most innovative vaccine models in this field is multiepitope vaccines since, based on advances in immunoinformatics, they facilitate immunization against parasites at different stages of their cycles. Objective: In this study, we evaluate the published efficacy of multiepitope vaccines against helm

Helminth parasites of wild animals represent a major threat to the health of these animals, leading to significant losses in performance, health, and zoonotic implications. In some zoos, anthelmintics have traditionally been used to control these parasites, many of which are also zoonotic. Other actions, such as the removal of organic waste, have also been adopted. Few or no control measures are applied to free-ranging wild animals. Helminthophagous fungi are a promising biological alternative. When animals ingest fungal spores, they are excreted in their feces, where they trap and destroy hel

Parasitic worms (helminths) release extracellular vesicles (EVs) -membrane-surrounded, nanosized structures loaded with a repertoire of active biomolecules- as part of their excretory/secretory products. These particles play key roles in intercellular communication, not only within multicellular organisms but also between organisms that establish stable biological associations, as it occurs during parasitism. Since their "rediscovery" in 2012, the field of helminth EVs has expanded significantly, with a wealth of research conducted both in model organisms and parasites of human and veterinary

Interleukins 33, 25, and thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) are core components of type two immune responses and have been studied extensively using helminth infection models. However, many questions remain regarding their cellular sources, their immune recipients, as well as how they shape immunity. Recent literature has demonstrated non-epithelial alarmin production, acting primarily on lymphoid effector cells, and has suggested a role for alarmins in licensing of effector function in tissues during immunity, in dissent with conceptions of classical alarmins as epithelium-derived, myeloid-t

Epithelial barriers are critical in our interaction with the outside world. They mediate gas exchange in the lung, nutrient absorption in the gut and provide a barrier against pathogen entry throughout the body. Until relatively recently, these mechanical barrier functions were thought to represent the primary mechanism by which the epithelium protects against infection; however, current research is unveiling a broad range of interactions between epithelial barrier cells and the immune response. This Chapter reviews current evidence that the epithelium is central to the immune response to soil

This study presents the first documented occurrence of Macracanthorhynchus hirudinaceus (Pallas, 1781) parasitizing Didelphis marsupialis (Linnaeus, 1758) in Brazil. Specimens were collected in the Soure Marine Extractive Reserve, Marajó Island, Pará state, northern Brazil. In January and February 2025, parasites were recovered from the intestinal region of two hosts. Necropsy revealed acanthocephalans of unusual sizes in the intestinal loops and significant granuloma formation. Additionally, fecal samples were collected from the cecum region. Morphological/morphometric analyses of the helmint

BACKGROUND: Despite the significant success of deworming programs in reducing morbidity due to soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections globally, efforts to achieve elimination of STH as a public health problem or to potentially interrupt transmission will require improving and intensifying surveillance. However, non-participation in surveillance threatens the ability of programs to adequately monitor program status and limited research has been conducted to investigate drivers of non-participation in stool-based surveillance.

Despite the extensive information on the effects of habitat alteration on the structure of helminth communities in small mammals, the evidence is still inconclusive. A systematic review was carried out using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis) guideline to compile and synthesize available literature on the influence of habitat alteration on the structure of helminth communities in small mammals. The aim of this review was to describe the variation in infection rates of helminth species associated with habitat alteration and to discuss the theoretical

Helminths are parasitic worms that coevolve with their host, usually resulting in long-term persistence through modulating host immunity. The multifarious mechanisms altering the immune system induced by helminths have significant implications on the control of coinfecting pathogens such as viruses. Here, we explore the recent literature to highlight the main immune alterations and mechanisms that affect the control of viral coinfection. Insights from these mechanisms are valuable in the understanding of clinical observations in helminth-prevalent areas and in the design of new therapeutic and

The French grunt, Haemulon flavolineatum, is an abundant fish and a good model for studying parasite communities. Specimens were collected at 4 localities between the Campeche Bank (within the Gulf of Mexico) and the Mexican Caribbean Sea to describe and compare the differences and similarities between localities and regions in the communities of parasitic helminths. Thus, we calculated the Hill numbers associated with species richness (q = 0) and the dominance estimator (q = 2) using rarefaction and extrapolation curves to provide asymptotic estimators of diversity. A 2-way PERMANOVA was used

Semi-aquatic European water frogs (Pelophylax spp.) harbour rich helminth infra-communities, whose effects on host population size in nature are poorly known. To study top-down and bottom-up effects, we conducted calling male water frog counts and parasitological investigations of helminths in waterbodies from different regions of Latvia, supplemented by descriptions of waterbody features and surrounding land use data. We performed a series of generalized linear model and zero-inflated negative binomial regressions to determine the best predictors for frog relative population size and helminth
